This book is practical and well organized and has tons of great maps in it. Jordan was my favorite travel experience out of the 12 countries I've visited.I just got back from a nine day trip in Jordan. My friend and I went to Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, Amman, Madaba, Umm Qais, Jerash, and Ajlun. This guidebook is so accurate and thorough - it made the trip a breeze. The section on language was a blessing, including the great section on foods and drinks in Jordan. All the cultural tips were helpful and accurate (girls AND guys - cover your legs and arms like the locals!), and the extensive sections on the history of Jordan and Petra were insightful. Many prices have increased since this was published. For example, entry visa is now JD20 instead of JD10 (about $28). But overall, travel in Jordan is cheaper than travel in America, and much cheaper than travel Europe. There's also info in here for booking a tour with a company, probably a lot easier than connecting the dots yourself like we did.I would add a few tips that I didn't see in the book: be aware that many vendors won't have change for large bills, so always have some 1s and 5s with you. Also, in the book, some of the information about buses was misleading; we got stuck at the dead sea at 4pm on a Saturday with no buses in sight, contrary to the impression we got from the guidebook. However, EVERYONE in Jordan is so helpful, and we were able to hitch a ride back to West Amman with a tour group, and then the tour guide drove in his own car us back to our hotel in downtown Amman. If you're going to be taking buses, check with the staff at your hotel to confirm what the guidebook recommends. Every other bus we took was fine though. In Amman, we took private taxis to the bus stations instead of the white, shared cabs. It was not very expensive, and was less stressful than trying to figure out the stops/routes of the shared cabs. In general, buses run more in the morning than in the afternoon or evening.My friend and I are active hikers from Colorado, and we loved Petra and Wadi Rum most of all. The stars at night in Wadi Rum made the whole trip for me - breathtaking. In both these places, the more you can walk in a day, the more you'll see, so make sure you're in shape before you go, and bring good shoes and thick socks. I'd say ideally you need three days in Petra; we had two FULL days of hiking and didn't see it all. We did the night tour of Petra, which honestly I wouldn't do again (search google images for "petra night" and you'll get the idea). After a full day of hiking, walking all the way back into Petra in the cold night wasn't fun, and when the group arrived at the treasury, everyone's camera flashes really killed the vibe. Petra is filled with vendors who sell trinkets VERY aggressively, so brace yourself for constant offers of donkey and camel rides and cheap jewelry.Traveling in the Middle East takes more preparation than Europe. If you're thinking about going to Jordan, get this guide book and read it months before you go; you'll be glad you did. I'd also recommend getting some free Arabic podcasts off itunes. My favorite was a small series by the Peace Corps for volunteers in Jordan. It had all the important phrases, and with Jordanian dialect and accent. Watch out for Arabic podcasts geared towards Morocco; the language is very different there. I also read the books "Married to a Bedouin" and "Live from Jordan" before I went. Both great books that informed my view of the country and it's people.A tip: from downtown Amman, you can hike up the hill (stairs between houses) to the Citadel and sneak in without paying at the entrance. The views at the top are killer, and it's fun to see the ancient ruins juxtaposed with the bustling city. Also, locals hang out up there in the evening (it's probably the only parkland/open-space in that part of town). We ended up there at sunset and all around us were locals, kids playing soccer, women picnicking, families taking photos. We felt so special to be up there; we were the only tourists around.I cannot say enough how kind people were to us. Everywhere we went people offered us tea. I got a haircut one day in Madaba, and they insisted I not pay and brought us tea and gave us bread and nuts and we hung out - such a memory. One of our favorite drinks was "lemon juice" with mint mixed in. So good! Many menus were in English, and most service industry folks knew enough english to help us out.My personal recommendations, in order: Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea, Jerash. I'd say plan a few days for Petra and a few for Wadi Rum. Plan on half a day for the Dead Sea, most of a day for Jerash (eat at the Lebanese house! So good!). Amman is a hectic city. My friend and I loved it, but many casual travelers hate it. The guidebook suggests basing yourself in Madaba if you want a more mellow time. besides, it's closer to the airport than Amman.The three hotels we stayed at, which I recommend: Burj al Arab in Amman, Cleopetra in Wadi Musa (Petra), Mariam in Madaba. Our guide in Wadi Rum was Mzied Atieg; he was awesome.Another great thing about our trip: we met many wonderful travelers from Europe and America. Being in such a special place, travelers were very open to spending time with us and talking about their travels. We met such wonderful folks, and we compared notes about where we'd stayed, what we'd done, what else we were going to do on our trip.In conclusion, if you're thinking about traveling to Jordan, get this book!I would add; check current news in Jordan before committing to visit. Two protestors died in Amman the day we left. Sobering and scary. However, in our travels we encountered no troubles or tension, and everyone was kind to us, and they continued to be kind to us after we told them we were from America. Most Jordanians don't like American foreign policy, but they like Americans just fine.

I bought this just prior to my trip to Jordan in May 2015. I found it extremely reliable with respect to all the normal tourist areas from the Syrian border to the Red Sea. My son and I covered them all on our own driving a rental car . Next to my GPS this was the most valuable asset I had. When I wanted to know where to park my car at the Allenby Bridge so I could do a one day trip to Jerusalem he told me .When I wanted to explore out of the way tells and see where the Moabite Stela was discovered all I needed to do was " look in the book". My 8 days driving the length of Jordan was made relatively easy thanks to the info provided in this thin volume. Incidentally tourism is down 60% . We were the only americans we saw the entire time we were there and the people were uniformly happy to see us .Go . Go now

I must admit that I am new to using a Kindle and this was my first go at using a travel guide that wasn't a paperback. With more experience at using the Kindle I might change my mind, but it was often a problem going between information and maps. The maps were also difficult to read when I tried enlarging them. However, the information about places was good and we were happy with the restaurants recommended by the guide. I would recommend having a separate, paper map as back-up if you are driving as we were. I would also like to strongly suggest that, if you have the time, follow Matthew's advice and spend a few days at Feynan Ecolodge - even with unexpected rain it was one of the best things we did!

Even though it is about 14 years old, the explicit description of the sites were very helpful since we travelled independently. Not much has changed except prices have doubled. The history and political chapters were very helpful.

If you read the 21 reviews listed for this guide, know that only 9 pertain to this edition. After know that know that this 2012 edition was researched in 2010/11 which was before the Syrian refugee crisis. An event that has serious changed Jordan. Now, as I write this review there are over 500 hundred thousand desperate refugees from Syrian seeking hope and home in this small (and getting smaller country). I work in medicine and one Jordan doctor told me that the government figure of 450,000 Syria Refugees are kept low to not disturb the Jordanians .... he said really there are double those number in Jordan. I tell you that because this book describes what Jordan was like in 2011 but not what it is today. For example, in the book, in the Ajloun sections, it states that "Northern Jordan's verdant hills are cut through by countless lush valleys..." I was just there and it is gone... all gone, sorry.What I am seeing is construction everywhere and very tacky construction at that - the cement block buildings with zero personality...places to hold people... but definitely no more lush valleys.That said, this can be a good guide if you stay on proven tourist routes "Petra, Dead Sea, Jerash, etc" then you will benefit from this Rough Guide. The write is a good write, Matthew Teller, and I do hope he comes out soon with the 6th edition.

While the detail is extensive, Kindle compatibility is lacking (as usual). The maps are illegible on my 1.5 y.o. Kindle; zooming only expands the text not images. I also was unable to get the text search function to work. Freebie pdf viewer software provides a better user experience. Come on Amazon/travel guide companies and get up to speed.

just returned from 2 weeks traveling in Jordan, used the latest edition.A precise guide, made the trip much easier and comfortable.The author made a fantastic job, I just do not understand how a single person was able to provide so much precise details.I rent a car, and can confirm that number of gas stations in Jordan is less than crusaders castles.The only thing, which may be I want to add, that if you are lucky to find one of those gas stations, please be aware, that local folks try to charge you pointing on the number of liters, which is about twice as much, as number in JD.

Can't recommend this book more. One of the first training books I ever read, and the lesson of utter brutality as a mentality, in the gym and in life, has stayed with me throughout my training. The book is less focused on providing a strict program (though there are two good ones offered, one with weights and one with bodyweight movements), and more concerned with providing examples of good movements. Of particular note to me was the section on building a bigger neck; I read this book after receiving a concussion while playing football, with symptoms like a splitting headache and memory issues lasting for almost two years. I knew I needed to build up a more robust neck, so an injury like that couldn't happen again. I started using the methods described in the book, and within three months my neck was noticably larger. All told, over the course of a year and a half, my neck has grown from 15 inches around to 18 inches around, and I feel comfortable doing things like playing rugby with my friends again.Overall, it's a fantastic book, even if all you pick up from it is one or two things to add to your training, or just the mentality of absolute strength in life and in training.

This book had less "being in jail is hardcore cool" than other prison fitness books and took more of a scientific look at *why* some people end up getting in shape when incarcerated.The weighted routines looked better than the bodyweight stuff. If you truly want to get bigger and better using bodyweight only training, I think you are better off using Stew Smith's "PT Pyramid" and some squats at least a few times a week rather than a bodybuilding-style 'split' where you train different body parts different days.That said, this is a very good book and well worth the money, and most of even the bodyweight info in there is spot on. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

I was using the kindle version and loved it so much I bought the paperback.Opening the book, I understood 70% of the exercises immediately. It's all simple stuff. The only difficult stuff is the variations of some of the original exercises, but everything is illustrated and explained perfectly.Can't do an exercise like the pistol squats or handstand pushups? There's a guide to build you up to that in there. Want a cool story about an exercise or not motivated to do a weird exercise? HERE'S A STORY ABOUT MIKE TYSON DOING IT!An engaging, uncomplicated, well laid out read. Absolutely recommend this book to anyone wanting to get in to bodyweight training. You won't regret it, especially the with the great price too.

This is the book I was looking for but didn't realize it. The book is very no-nonsense with a lot of really good information on how to get into great shape, get stronger, and do it with minimal resources and space. There's no verbose fluff stories about the glory days in prison or how the old-school strong-men were bigger and badder than anyone around (looking at you Convict Conditioning). Long story short, this is a great book with a lot of really solid information that I would confidently recommend to a friend.

I bought this book, and read it NOW; this is what a Workout should look like. I get so many people asking me what I do for chest etc. I buy books like this one; read them; go to the gym do some running and get it. This is a favorite book I first read years ago. Like many of Esther de Waal's books, it's a book I want to share - but I also want to have a copy sitting on a nearby shelf. This book is so insightful about many aspects of living a Benedictine-style life in our day and age, that I just love it.

For anyone who is interested in understanding Benedictine spirituality, this book is a must. It is clearly written, and it provides the reader with a way to think about The Way of St. Benedict as it could be applied in modern life.

Seeking God: The Way of St. Benedict not only explains the rule in clear terms, it shows how it can be implemented (i.e., lived) by an individual living outside of a monastic community. As a married man with children (now grown) who loves his family oriented vocation, the book gave me both insight into, and a way to live out my calling to a contemplative spirituality in a world that rarely appreciates or acknowledges such a mixed vocation. It's been more than 25 years since I first read the book and while I've only re-read it cover to cover a couple of times over the years, I have frequently picked it up to re-read a few pages or a chapter that seems relevant.

This is a wonderful short read overview in preparation of the Rule of Benedict .

If you are seeking a well balanced life, this book is for you. I read this and it provided a foundation for my spiritual development that enabled me to build on it and become closer to God.

This is a great book for those who are new to Benedictine Spirituality. deWaal has taken all the elements of Benedictine Spirituality and organized them into chapters. This lays the groundwork for an informed reading of "The Rule of St. Benedict". I cannot recommend this book strongly enough.

Traveling as they did with packs of armored wolfhounds and mastiffs that were on a diet of human flesh and were trained to disembowel Indians, the Spanish used the dogs to terrorize slaves and to entertain the troops. An entire book Dogs of the Conquest, has been published recently, detailing the exploits of these animals as they accompanied their masters throughout the course of the Spanish depredations. "A properly fleshed dog," these authors say, "could pursue a 'savage' as zealously and effectively as a deer or a boar.... To many of the conquerors, the Indian was merely another savage animal, and the dogs were trained to pursue and rip apart their human quarry with the same zest as they felt when hunting wild beasts." And also on pages 83-84 "Just as the Spanish soldiers seem to have particularly enjoyed testing the sharpness of their yard-long rapier blades on the bodies of Indian children, so their dogs seemed to find the soft bodies of infants especially tasty, and thus the accounts of the invading conquistadors and the padres who traveled with them are filled with detailed descriptions of young Indian children routinely taken from their parents and fed to the hungry animals. Men who could take pleasure in this sort of thing had little trouble with less sensitive matters, such as the sacking and burning of entire cities and towns, and the destruction of books and tablets containing millennia of accumulated knowledge, wisdom, and religious belief."After page 146 there's an illustrated unnumbered section titled Genocide the first nine pages of this section contain pictures of how the Spanish tortured and killed Indian women and children as stated on the second page of this section "[The Spaniards] took babies from their mothers' breasts, grabbing them by the feet and smashing their heads against rocks...They built a long gibbet, low enough for the toes to touch the ground and prevent strangling, and hanged thirteen [natives] at a time in honor of Christ Our Saviour and the twelve Apostles. Then, straw was wrapped around their torn bodies and they were burned alive."Not to be outdone the good old American cavalry also engaged in its' fair share of savage murder and killing as can be seen from the bottom of page126 to the top of page 127 "They turned their guns, Hotchkiss guns, etc., upon the women who were in the lodges standing under a flag of truce, and of course as soon as they were fired upon they fled....There was a woman with an infant in her arms who was killed as she almost touched the flag of truce, and the women and children of course were strewn all along the circular village until they were dispatched. Right near the flag of truce a mother was shot down with her infant; the child not knowing that its mother was dead was still nursing, and that was especially a very sad sight. The women as they were fleeing with their babes were killed together, shot right through, and the women who were very heavy with child were also killed." I personally do not celebrate Columbus Day and Thanksgiving Day this book is ample proof and evidence as to why these two days should be set aside as a time for mourning not celebration, if you want your children to have a true understanding of American history then I strongly urge you to buy this book and have it as part of your home library.

This on deserves all the stars in the galaxy...American Holocaust is a painstakingly well researched account of the genocide perpetrated upon the Indigenous people of the Americas by European invaders. It is not an easy read - unless you have a heart of stone you will cry at some point. But it's all true, and really needs to be taught. Cannot recommend highly enough - just wish it were possible to give this more stars

Feels strange saying that I love a book that is as disturbing as this one is but I love that it's well-written and documented and it exposes some horrendous events in the history of the Americas as well as the world. Americans may well point fingers at the Nazis (and deservedly so) but it's a case of people in glass houses throwing stones. There is no question as to the repulsiveness and inhumanity of the genocide and mass murders perpetrated in Nazi Germany, Stalin's Soviet Union, Mao's China, the Khmer Rouge's Cambodia, and in a host of African nations, to name a few; but in our own not too distant past similar atrocities were perpetrated on the native populations of the Americas by the Spanish, Portuguese, British, and colonists/Americans. While the inhumanity elsewhere in the world is touched upon to show where the mindset of this barbarity likely originated, the focus is on the impact in the Americas -- North, South, and Central. The book contains graphic, disturbing descriptions of the cruelty done to the natives by men who have long been esteemed for their alleged contributions in history. Most notably Christopher Columbus. In my time in grade school, he and the many other conquistadors and explorers were portrayed and men of courage and integrity. This book paints a different picture of them as greedy, bloodthirsty, remorseless killers of peoples who they considered inhuman or subhuman. More troubling is Christianity's participation in these actions. Not to blame Christianity for initiating it but to indict it for condoning and even commending the events. Peaceful races of people minding their own business, living in communities well planned and constructed and advanced for their time, and who welcomed the interlopers were obliterated them. Much of the death and destruction was caused by the introduction of European diseases such as smallpox that killed tens of millions but a large part was also caused by actions of odious proportions. Entire civilizations such as the Aztec and the Inca and the Arawak whose artifacts have since been admired and sought after were wiped off the face of the earth. Tens of millions of people slaughtered. Men, women, children butchered. In numbers likely to exceed those of the aforementioned genocides combined. The purpose being to acquire their lands and their riches. Considered to be no more than animals needed to be exterminated. This is our history.This book should be required reading for everyone. The graphic descriptions of the savagery should cause outrage not only for the acts themselves but for a cultures that has covered up their crimes for centuries. And the holocaust has not ended yet.

The saddest thing I've ever read, but everyone should know about this! In the name of religion and fear over 100 million native Americans were slaughtered. Even today, they are suppressed and continuously battle the Federal government over their lands. It was nice to see Leonardo DiCaprio mentioning his support of native Americans' freedoms in his Golden Globe speech for his movie The Revenant.

This book contains knowledge that everyone should be aware of. I have read portions of this information in other locations but never assembled in such complete detail. I don't write many book reviews any longer- I read well over 200 books a year and just don't have that kind of time. And I never was a fan of nonfiction. I'm not a nosy person, and don't care to read about their lives.This book, however, I had to have! I'm a huge animal lover, a fan of Pit Bulls and Parolees, and this book, while having some personal info in it, is more about the dogs that mattered the most- a handful of them, anyway. THAT was the kind of nonfiction I could get behind, so I ordered an autographed copy of the book, preordered the Kindle version, and waited eagerly for midnight for the book to show up on my device.I devoured it in 2 sittings, only because sleep was necessary. If you love the show, you've seen Monster and Blueie. You watched the rescue of Lucky the "ghost dog". You saw pictures of Mariah's beautiful dog, L.A. Your heart hurts watching the show and you cry with each loss. Now you can read more about these special dogs that touched your heart from Tia Torres's perspective. I chuckled, I was excited to read more, I cried several times, and I was truly sorry to reach the end of the book.Ms. Torres, you've said you enjoy writing. I hope you will publish another with some more amazing dog stories. I'd love to read more about some other favorites, like Rhino, how Jasper became yours, the story of Jack (since you talked of the beautiful Monster in this book), and any other truly amazing dogs who've touched your heart the way they've touched mine. This book was amazing, well written, included only one typo to my eye ("lung" instead of "lunge") and I'll definitely be looking for more books to read in between bingeing the show.

My heartfelt thanks too you, your family and your rescue that comes into our homes year after year. It is always a learning experience watching a!I of you with unconditional love for all the underdogs. I have a chronic/terminal illness. I have been very sick for yrs. Started reading this at noon today and couldn't put it down till I was finished reading it. 5 hours later, and in awe of this amazing lady. I've been watching the show since it aired and have cried during many episodes. Reading this book made me laugh and cry so many times. Tia is such a down to earth lady and will do anything for her kids, 2 legged and 4. Remembering all the dogs mentioned in this book brought back memories of each dog as they were in the show. Bluie and Tania's story, both in the show and again in the book had me crying like a baby. Keep up the amazing job you do and God Bless you and your family. Truly an amazing animal loving family🐕🐕

This book is a must read for anyone who loves animals and especially those working in various rescue groups. It is heartwarming and tear producing, and you will be inspired in the reading of Tia's stories. The only recommendation is that she write another one or 10 as we would love to read more stories of her life with her dog and human family. I highly recommend this book because you will not be bored as her writing is spot-on, and your spirit will be uplifted hearing about her life and her hardships along the way. Her main theme in her book and her life is never let life get you down where you feel helpless. Fall down, get up and do it all again and again until you get it right. Thank You Tia Torres for being such a shining example for us all.

I am a regular watcher of the program (though mostly in reruns). Tia and her family and parolee workers are always entertaining. And you can't help but grasp the love that they have for the dogs. But this was special ... in that it delves into the back stories of dogs that have been pivotal in Tie's live and the lives of her children. The extra benefit is that she is a really good writer ... something that many who sell books can't honestly say! I'd be surprised if you didn't find yourself belly-laughing at one scene and weeping at another. Which is at the heart of every relationship we have with our dogs. Buy it ... read it ... pass the word!

Such an amazing science experiment book! Love how simple the activities are, yet they still are great for teaching science concepts. My kids love picking out activities from this book!

I have been using this book for summer time learning activities. The activities and experiments are really great - from easy to hard, very little prep and quick to more involved, and they cover so many different areas. I really like the sections that give prompts for questions to ask the kids before the experiment and after, along with really easy-to-understand explanations of the science behind what happened.

Science should be hands on and exciting. This book makes it both. The experiments aren't just for fun, they teach scientific principles. This book makes scientists out of both teacher and student.

Used as a summer filler for my STEM school going 7 year old. I absolutely loved how most if not all experiments required not having to pick up pricey or odd materials that I wouldn't have on hand. We did one once a week and I really liked reading the "why" about explanations. A rare find and I would recommend it as a birthday gift!

May want to avoid if you live in California. Many of the experiments require straws.

The experiments in this book are fun and most of them use things you probably already have around the house. The photos are beautiful and the book is very well made!

Great book for new scientists. Bought it for my 4 year old granddaughter during my recent visit. She loved our experiment time each day. It was easy to find experiments to do with the supplies we already had. She especially liked the cornstarch and water experiment.

The best children’s science book I have ever seen! As an aunt - I loved seeing how engaged and excited my nephews were when doing these experiments. All the supplies where household objects so it was easy to pick anyone and complete it with them. As a second grade teacher - I LOVE how this book is divided into sections with experiments for each of the STEAM categories; S-science T-technology E-engineering A-art M-math. I also love explanations of the science behind each experiment.
