This is the book my instructor at California College of the Arts uses for the Ideation Sketching course. This book teaches you the 'why' and 'how' of design sketching. The book gets a little wordy at the end, but the beginning has a wonderful process for developing your sketches, based on the concept of drawing perfect cubes, then adding and subtracting, to get your final object. This book also includes simple instructions on shading and drop shadows. Whether you are designing products, buildings, interiors or landscapes, this book has you covered, with examples pulled from all of those fields.Anecdotally, I have been told this book is better than the newer versions. I cannot verify that, since I haven't seen the newer versions. I do, however, highly recommend this version.If you are a designer and need to draw, this book is for you. While I cannot stress enough that this book works better with an instructor, there is a great deal of value here for folks who are self-taught too.

I just ordered an additional copy of this great book for one of my drawing students and felt compelled to pen a review, especially when I was shocked to see 1 and 2 star reviews. However, the explanation was obvious when I saw Amazon's description. It is not, remotely "A lighthearted approach to developing the fundamental skills of drawing". It has nothing to do with classical drawing technique. It is what the subtitle says it is- "A Visual Approach to Thinking, Learning, and Communicating". This is about drawing as a super-powerful ideation and communication skill set, NOT about making pretty pictures (though, nothing wrong with that- the one star review guy's recommended books are for that).I'm a scholastically trained industrial designer, Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. I design museum and trade show exhibitry as well as traditional and computer graphic work and, in addition, am a classically trained painter. You can see my work at robertstotts.com. What this book, along with Rapid Viz, around which my very first summer class at CCS was built, provides a platform of how to use drawing to explore and convey ideas in a terrifically simple and playful style. The beauty of this approach is exactly what the one star guy slammed it for, the reality that you don't have to be Leonardo Da Vinci before you can, not only enjoy drawing, but use it really effectively in communicating ideas, designs, and all sorts of concepts.What I was using Draw! for last night at my class was helping a young couple get their feet wet in drawing via some of the fun exercises like one starting a doodle, and the other visualizing a shape in it and completing it, or inventing fun, freeform fish of all shapes, to practice the body mechanics of drawing from the big arm joints, elbow and shoulder, rather than the fingers and wrist to get fluid confident lines. Instead of stressing and beating themselves in frustration for not being able to "do" it right, they had a fun, uplifting experience while developing truly legitimate skills that will aid them in classical drawing when we move to that.Without question, the biggest problem that I have as a drawing/painting teacher is convincing adult students that the study is about fun, validating the legitimacy of their creativity, and enjoying a truly personal self-exploration, not "fixing the problem of being bad at art". Books such as Draw! and Rapid Viz, in addition to being terrific for giving not-artist a great communication tool set, are terrific as a get-out-of-your head portal into drawing and all visual arts. After 30 years as a full time professional commercial and fine artist, I still really enjoy the learning, style, and sketches in these books. Highest recommendation.

The title's meaning is self-evident but the potential value of what can be learned from Kurt Hanks and Larry Belliston in this book is not. First published in 1980 and now available in a Third Edition (2006) that some view as inferior to its predecessor (1990), this book is based on the same core assumption that Dan Roam's three books are: the quality and clarity of ideas can be increased and improved by illustrating them. If you have no ideas, you need other sources of assistance. If you have difficulty articulating your ideas with words, Hanks and Bellistin can prepare you to express yourself visually and that, in turn, will strengthen your verbal skills. The techniques and skills that Rapid Viz approach requires are introduced in this book, and thoroughly explained, accompanied by exercises that can help you to develop them.In their Introduction, Hanks and Belliston explain the objectives and guidelines used to develop their book as well as the goals of the Rapid Viz method, once that was fine-tuned during several decades of application and modification. They also suggest what their reader ("student") needs to get started: a pencil and/or felt-tip pen ("Use whatever you want as long as it's simple, cheap, and you can carry it in your pocket or purse at all times"), perhaps multi-colored felt-tip pens and/or pencils, perhaps an eraser and/or ruler, sheets of some regular bond paper, a pad of 14" X 17" tracing paper.At this point, I presume to suggest that you consider a sketchbook with blank pages and have it nearby as you complete various exercises within the book. Why? Sooner and more often than you may now expect, completing the process of instruction that Hanks and Belliston follow will generate stimulate your thoughts and feelings as well as images associated with them. You need to record notes, comments, and illustrations (however simple). As you learn more about the process, and as you strengthen your skills, you will also develop an "eye" that will recognize your progress over time. My personal preference is for the Pro Art Sketch Book (5.5" X 8", 220 Pages) that I purchase through Amazon for $5.94 plus shipping.With regard to the exercises within Chapters 1-6 and the additional exercises in Appendix A, most of them can be completed within the book. There may be a few that you wish to complete several times, hence the need for the sheets of paper and a blank-pages notebook, if you have one. Practice may not make perfect but it can certainly support improvement. However, practice with discipline and purpose. As Hanks and Belliston point out, "The exercises attempt to restrict your freedom temporarily. Tight restrictions as to what is drawn, how long to take, and so forth make drawing easier during the early stages of the learning process. Set you own tight goals. Too many choices breed confusion and non-performance. Decide specifically what to do and do it."Two final points. First, with regard to "rapid," make haste slowly. Rapid Viz really is a progressive process. Also, the value of this book will be determined almost entirely by the quality and extent of attention and effort you commit to the learning opportunities that Kurt Hanks and Larry Belliston offer.

This book is a true classic. It's written in just the style I like, in a "here's the straight dope" style, no pretense. The first edition was required reading when I was an undergrad studying product design, and I ordered this version for my kids to learn from. Doesn't disappoint!!

I loved this book when I first read it many years ago. I wanted a copy of my own, and I'm enjoying re-reading it with the added perspective of a decade. First read a library copy, made notes, and incorporated some ideas in my personal note-taking, and in teaching students to take notes that are easier to recall. Good stuff!

Harry M. Kraemer is wonderful! His book From Values to Action highlights the simple but sound foundations of great and intentional leadership. I was assigned to read this book in a class called Leadership for Life, and I thought it was a short and valuable read. It's a great reminder of how our character shows through our decisions and actions. I highly recommend this book for anyone who's studying Business Management or who may find themselves in a leadership position someday. I feel that it shares great insight on the ins-and-outs of business, management, and people.

From Values to Action: The Four Principles of Values-Based Leadership is a great book on leadership that provides a holistic take on how to approach leadership using the four principles of self-reflection, balance, true self-confidence and genuine humility. In part one of this book, Kraemer takes us on a personal journey to become a better leader by putting into practice each of these four principles. In part one of this three-part book we first take a look at ourselves, where Kraemer shows us why it doesn’t matter if we are a leader of 1,000 or we are a leader of only ourselves, these four principles can help us to improve our personal leadership skills. Part two of From Values to Action than moves us into building a values-based organization that fosters an environment where values are at the core of why and how things are done within the organization. The book is addressed to those who aspire to be in corporate management. The author shares a great deal of personal experiences throughout his career. As the title of the books states, the focus is on values-based leadership. The author provides an understanding of what it means to be a leader, but also what is means to be a leader with core convictions. Throughout the book the author shares his ideas of a values-based approach to leadership and what it means to carry out these values. At the heart of values-based leadership are three broad components that are shared: the four qualities of principled leadership, what it means to be a values-based organization, and how to lead an organization with success and significance.The title of the book intrigued me from the onset. I did enjoy this book since I am a big proponent of the values-based leadership philosophy. I enjoyed the reinforcement of sound wisdom of the author who has experienced a fulfilling life along with the personal storytelling of his career. The reason I gave it four stars is because many of these kinds of books say a lot of the same things: Work-life balance, effective communication, etc. The content is not anything new, but it is a good reminder to practice/sharpen these skills.

This is a great book about leadership broken down to four basic and human principles. Kraemer provides multiple examples from his personal career and experience at Kellogg making the content easy to assimilate. I see myself reading this book every couple of years as a content refresh. Will definitely keep a post visible on my desk with the principles. Many values of other successful companies (eg. Amazon) can be tied back to these four principles.

This book was brought to my attention through the value-based actions by Harry Kraemer. He is donating the proceeds of the book sales to One Acre Fund, an organization I support. I love a good business book, and I was not disappointed with From Values to Action. Good read, loaded with excellent information. Some tried and true concepts, well articulated and some new concepts. Here's one I liked: 3 simple goals 1. Always learning 2. Add value, make a difference, 3. Have fun. There's also a simple exercise - how to figure out what you want to do. It's a very pass-along worthy item. By all means - get this book. Not only will you learn something new from a master, but you will be contributing to One Acre Fund, a socially innovative way to end hunger among the poorest of the poor.

I was accepted at Kellogg and decided to attend a different program. Harry Kraemer's class is renowned around Kellogg so I decided to pick up his book. Ironically, it was this book by Harry Kraemer Jr. that helped me achieve peace with my decision to pass on Kellogg and attend a less prestigious program. A very good book for getting either your business or life in order. I enjoyed the entire book, however it loses a little luster after the first 100 pages. It is a quick read (I am a slow reader) and worth reading the whole thing though, there are some gems later in the book. Definitely worth while and one I anticipate reading again in a few years, although maybe not as thoroughly.

It provides the reader with a "jump- start" to the area of speech coding. Detailed explanations, with a large number of schematics and illustrating diagrams, furnish a vehicle for a fast learning curve.Nevertheless, the quality of some of these schematics and diagrams need to be revised in future editions. Furthermore, there are some missing notations with some of the curves discussed; such as in Figure 1.14. Todd is a great teacher, one of the best I've had in almost four years of college. He's AWS certed to preform cert tests and also a welding inspector. This book is exactly what I was looked for: learning kanji. You don't need any kanji experience to get the best use out of it, but you should probably know Hiragana first. This book provides mnemonics to memorize kanji, space for writing practice, and also provides related vocabulary you can study. At the end of each section there are about three activities on what you just learned. My only complaint is that I wish there were more activities in utilizing the learned vocabulary.

Mnemonics in this book and its sister book on Kana make this indispensable.

Lesson 9 practice #2 quizzes on kanji's not taught until lesson 31. #5 is not until lesson 12 and the answer is kana, not kanji. Kanji is hard enough w/o the quizzes being whacked. If you reference things you haven't taught yet, you might want to warn the reader as such. The companion kana book taught me kana in 30 days. It had no such problems.

I purchased this book in conjunction with my Japanese class that I was taking in Japan. It was a very helpful book when I was just starting to learn Kanji. I would definitely recommend.

I love this book so much I actually purchased the hardcopy as well as the Kindle Version. It is very useful in learning Japanese Kanji.

This is one of the best honest and successful Peace Corps stories I have read. It's doubly interesting because of the cultural sensitivity and stories about people and a place I never even heard of. For those reasons, I would have given the book five stars.The four stars, however, are for the structure of the story. I know those three weeks of frightening uncertainty were uppermost in Tyler's mind, but the writing dragged on and on, repeating the same fears and his state of mind over a possible medical situation. I don't want to give anything away, but all his experiences and friendships of two years in the Peace Corps were the real story for the reader.

I really enjoyed this book. After reading the first few pages, I was a bit unimpressed with the writing - however, I ended up thoroughly enjoying the mix of learning a bit about a country I had never even heard of, learning about what it was like to be a Peace Corps volunteer, and being put into the mind of someone suddenly grappling with a potentially life altering medical condition. Tyler had a wonderful balance of these three factors, effectively intertwining vignettes into the story to pull in aspects of his own history, the history of the country, and operations within Peace Corps that added depth to the book that I hadn't expected. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in life experiences and other cultures.

As someone who overlapped a year with Tyler, it was wonderful to hear his stories about his time in Burkina Faso. I think that it is a great resource for anyone traveling to a West African Peace Corps country, and I would recommend it to anyone who would be placed in Burkina Faso, provided that the Peace Corps program there reopens as it closed recently due to terrorist threats. This book provided me with a lot of nostalgia and thoughts of my simpler life in village when I was a Volunteer. I got introduced to the book via his facebook, and later his podcast. Thank you, Tyler, for sharing this part of your journey with us. I appreciated the vulnerability in this story and the self awareness demonstrated. It was a joy to learn about the family Tyler made while in Burkina Faso. This book has inspired me to (hopefully) start a Peace Corps Story of my own. I thoroughly enjoyed the way the book was organized and told both in "present" and flashback.

I'm an avid podcast listener and found Tyler's podcast only after accepting my invitation to serve. His book is very much like his podcast, a way to tell a unique story, with his unique voice. Almost to short, I found myself reading this quickly and enjoying all the little details Tyler included in it. Not just a story for volunteers, this is a great review of how life changing the news of that disease is, even within an already turbulent and life changing set of circumstances.

What a fantastic look into life in west Africa through the experiences of a peace corp volunteer, it provided a lot of insight in the life of West Africa and caused awareness to HIV. Highly recommend this book!

Laschever was Connecticut’s director of tourism for more than 17 years and, for more than 30 years, has been a travel editor and writer for such newspapers as the Hartford Courant, the Hartford Times, and the New York Herald-Tribune. For three years he was managing editor for Fodor’s Guides. He lives in Goshen, Connecticut.Andi Marie Cantele is a freelance writer and professional gardener who enjoys hiking, rowing and cycling. She is the author of 52 Weekends in Connecticut, Explorer’s Guide New Jersey, Explorer’s Guide Connecticut, and cycling guides to Connecticut, New Hampshire, and western Massachusetts in Countryman’s Backroad Bicycling series. Her work has also appeared in Yankee Magazine, Bark magazine, and Best Places to Stay in New England. She lives in Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills region.
