Harry M. Kraemer is wonderful! His book From Values to Action highlights the simple but sound foundations of great and intentional leadership. I was assigned to read this book in a class called Leadership for Life, and I thought it was a short and valuable read. It's a great reminder of how our character shows through our decisions and actions. I highly recommend this book for anyone who's studying Business Management or who may find themselves in a leadership position someday. I feel that it shares great insight on the ins-and-outs of business, management, and people.

From Values to Action: The Four Principles of Values-Based Leadership is a great book on leadership that provides a holistic take on how to approach leadership using the four principles of self-reflection, balance, true self-confidence and genuine humility. In part one of this book, Kraemer takes us on a personal journey to become a better leader by putting into practice each of these four principles. In part one of this three-part book we first take a look at ourselves, where Kraemer shows us why it doesn’t matter if we are a leader of 1,000 or we are a leader of only ourselves, these four principles can help us to improve our personal leadership skills. Part two of From Values to Action than moves us into building a values-based organization that fosters an environment where values are at the core of why and how things are done within the organization. Finally, in Part three, Kraemer talks about being a values based leader within a values based organization and how to deal with the unexpected.Kraemer is able to clearly show in his book each of his points by using real life examples that he experienced in his own life and career at Baxter International, a multibillion dollar international corporation where he went from working in a cubicle to ending his career there after serving as the CEO for six years and now has had the opportunity to refine with years spent teaching leadership at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. The book is addressed to those who aspire to be in corporate management. The author shares a great deal of personal experiences throughout his career. As the title of the books states, the focus is on values-based leadership. The author provides an understanding of what it means to be a leader, but also what is means to be a leader with core convictions. Throughout the book the author shares his ideas of a values-based approach to leadership and what it means to carry out these values. At the heart of values-based leadership are three broad components that are shared: the four qualities of principled leadership, what it means to be a values-based organization, and how to lead an organization with success and significance.The title of the book intrigued me from the onset. I did enjoy this book since I am a big proponent of the values-based leadership philosophy. I enjoyed the reinforcement of sound wisdom of the author who has experienced a fulfilling life along with the personal storytelling of his career. The reason I gave it four stars is because many of these kinds of books say a lot of the same things: Work-life balance, effective communication, etc. The content is not anything new, but it is a good reminder to practice/sharpen these skills.

This is a great book about leadership broken down to four basic and human principles. Kraemer provides multiple examples from his personal career and experience at Kellogg making the content easy to assimilate. I see myself reading this book every couple of years as a content refresh. Will definitely keep a post visible on my desk with the principles. Many values of other successful companies (eg. Amazon) can be tied back to these four principles.

This book was brought to my attention through the value-based actions by Harry Kraemer. He is donating the proceeds of the book sales to One Acre Fund, an organization I support. I love a good business book, and I was not disappointed with From Values to Action. Good read, loaded with excellent information. Some tried and true concepts, well articulated and some new concepts. Here's one I liked: 3 simple goals 1. Always learning 2. Add value, make a difference, 3. Have fun. There's also a simple exercise - how to figure out what you want to do. It's a very pass-along worthy item. By all means - get this book. Not only will you learn something new from a master, but you will be contributing to One Acre Fund, a socially innovative way to end hunger among the poorest of the poor.

I was accepted at Kellogg and decided to attend a different program. Harry Kraemer's class is renowned around Kellogg so I decided to pick up his book. Ironically, it was this book by Harry Kraemer Jr. that helped me achieve peace with my decision to pass on Kellogg and attend a less prestigious program. A very good book for getting either your business or life in order. I enjoyed the entire book, however it loses a little luster after the first 100 pages. It is a quick read (I am a slow reader) and worth reading the whole thing though, there are some gems later in the book. Definitely worth while and one I anticipate reading again in a few years, although maybe not as thoroughly.
