At this price, one could ask for much more. As several reviewers have commented this is a short book with no color images. In fairness there is a link to a PDF file with examples in color, but for almost $30 dollars couldn't we have had these in the manual itself? I could not recommend this book to anyone, however:Pros:-Well laid out and easy to understand-Since Paint is free ware there are not many alternatives other than YouTube.Cons:- No color illustrations-subjects are covered in a very cursory fashion-Pricey

I don't know where to begin. You can learn more by reading the online help, the forum, and by using Google. The book uses a large type and has large pictures, so, at only 109 pages of actual content, this book could have been a booklet using a normal font. The pictures are B/W, if you can believe it, and yet the text directs the reader to see the "color" pictures. All of the feature descriptions are only one or two paragraphs in length. There's more, but I don't want to bore you.I can sum up this book in one word - worthless!

This is a very good book for people who only use this free program occasionally in that it is a good reminder of how the program works, especially for older users. There are also color examples available on the Internet.

Good book easy to understand the author.

Very helpful

In the past I've used Adobe Photoshop for my own personal use, as well as at work for relatively simple work. However, after losing my discount a number of years ago, I've kept my eye open for good alternatives, especially for those that were asking for my recommendation on software.I've always found Gimp to be a usability nightmare, so when Paint.NET started gaing traction a few years ago I was interested, but it was still fairly rough. But when I was asked by Packt Publishing if I'd be interested in reviewing their first book covering Paint.NET, I saw an opportunity to look at the software once again. While reading the first couple chapters (there are eight total, spread over 115 pages) I was reading it as someone who had previously read books on using Photoshop and had a number of years experiencing actually using the software, so I was disappointed how much I already knew. However, once I put my mindset into someone who had never used software like this before, I found myself enjoying the book much more. It's for the average individual, who just wants to do some basic editing of their photos (like my mother), that this book really shines. This relatively small book does a fairly good job of covering the functions a user needs to get started with Paint.NET. While I haven't tried yet, I feel fairly confident that giving this book to someone who has very little experience would have enough information at the end of the book to resize their photos and perform some basic editing (given Paint.NET's currently limited tools) on their own.I also found a healthy amount of humor in this book, and despite being published near the end of last year, the version of Paint.NET covered by this book is still the current version, so there were no issues following along.I think I would have liked to see a few more screenshots, as well as a few more examples (I strongly believe in iteration), but there's already a fair amount of both.As long as you approach this book as a new user of Paint.NET/Photoshop/etcetera, I think you'll find this gets you going quickly, and therefore give Getting Start with Paint.NET a full 5 of 5 stars.

I have been using Paint.Net for about 2 years now. I use it extensively and exclusively for doing web site graphics, album artwork, product design, marketing and promotional materials and many other "real world" applications.I am a huge fan of this product! I use it not only for my personal needs [...], but have handled multiple client jobs doing similar work as well.I just finished reading "Getting Started with Paint.NET", and my first thought was "I wish I had read this book when I first started with Paint.Net"!This book is a great introduction to Paint.Net and it's many facets and abilities. I found the descriptions to be quite detailed and the topics to be well covered. An average user, starting with no background in photo editing, can be editing and manipulating photos in no time.If your looking for a book to get you started in using Paint.Net for photo editing, this IS the book for you!

I started using Paint.Net several years ago when I was searching for a free program to teach at a Seniors Club, initially I thought it was a basic program with limitations but I soon discovered it was a lot more than that. Because I had experience with other graphic programs I pretty much worked it out as I went along so something like this would have been of great benefit ,like the last reviewer I found I knew most of it but there were still things I found of interest and they were explained very clearly in a way that beginners would understand .I thought all the chapters covered things very well and even people who had never used a graphics program before would have been able to follow it and get started .I have found that most beginners find it hard to grasp the concept of selections and layers this book explains both very well and once that is clear it is all much easier , I think most of the questions a beginner would have are covered and the index is very helpful for finding something quickly. For giving a beginner an easy to understand starting point I give it 5 stars .
