About the Author

Cheryl Charming aka Miss Charmingâ„¢ has been heavily steeped in the cocktail culture as a bartender since 1980. She has 15 published bar and cocktail related books. In high school she worked as a pizza waitress then quickly progressed to cocktail waitress, barback, bartender, and head bartender. With a penchant for travel, Cheryl tended bar many places around America, a cruise ship in the Caribbean, and Walt Disney World. While working at WDW she became the bar trick/bar magic instructor for Disney's F&B training program, Quest for the Best. Cheryl was also involved with hosting and participating in events for Tales of the Cocktail and teaching "Edutaining" cocktail classes for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line passengers. She is a member of The Bartenders Guild and The Museum of the American Cocktail. Cheryl studied Graphic and Interactive Communication at Ringling College of Art & Design and works as a freelance graphic artist on the side. Currently, she lives in the French Quarter and is the bar director at Bourbon O Bar on the corner of Bourbon and Orleans inside the Bourbon Orleans Hotel in the French Quarter. She was named "Mixologist of the Year" on 2014 by New Orleans Magazine.

I am in receipt of The Cocktail Companion and it is a stunner.Line me up, if bloody absolutely necessary. I am among the first to imbibe the best a city has to offer in the finest of its cocktail bars but if there is anything I adore more than a well made libation, it is the history of that libation. Particularly if it is among the classics. This book is a literal sea--and sea change--of encyclopedic knowledge about cocktail--and cocktail culture--history brought together in one place. I shrink to imagine the depth of time and difficulty that went into the creation of this drinking tome.I don't think there's anything she missed. Literally. This is one of my favorites of all of Kaffe Fassett’s quilting books. These beautiful antique quilts have been reproduced in colorful Kaffe Fassett fabrics. And the results are beautiful.I have sewn several quilts from his other books, using his fabrics. These same quilts were soaked in the “Harvey” floodwaters. After washing several times to sanitize them, the quilts still look great. The colors did not fade at all.I have rarely found a quilting book that contains more that one or two quilts that i want to reproduce, but this book is the exception.

This probably the best book for Kaffe Fassett I own, and I own several. It has just gorgeous pictures and I love the choices in this book. Plenty of quilts to make from easy to more complicated. But the photos are to die for! Can't say enough good things about this book.

I really wanted to like this book as I like Kaffe Fassett’s fabrics. There was really nothing new in this book. A series of old established quilt patterns were made over with his fabric. That was it. There really were t any unique or new designs - just different fabrics used. I didn’t need a new book for another nine patch, tumbling block or square in a square quilt. Sorry.

Grandson loves trains and loves this book. He will call me to read to me. I ordered the book so I can help him if he misses a word. Such Fun

This children starter reading book was poorly put together. Its content is very light regarding what makes up a train. The poor quality of this book is exemplified on the first page. The word "cold" was use rather than "coal" to describe a coal freight train. This is not how I want my children to learn how to read.

The train book has a big pro and con going on.Pro: It's a cute book. The pictures captivate my son's interest. The text is mostly informative, and for any kid who is into trains the book is going to be a bit hit.Con: The book has a bad habit of straying away from pictures of trains and informational text. For example, a page about train robberies really only has 1-2 useful sentences. The rest talks about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and explains that after a robbery bandits would ride off to their "hole-in-the-wall". And that page's vocabulary word is "loot". A focus on train robberies could be interesting, but the text fails to accomplish this.Another explain, it digitally adds a man in a train hat introducing himself as "Gary, the Engineer". He's an unnecessary addition to the book that distracts from the main point -- pictures of trains with accompanying informational text.All this being said, my sons still loves the book. I just wish it took a more streamlined approach to the topic like its sister volume, Caterpillars to Butterflies.

I knew that national geographic would have a wonderful book with great illustrations ! I care for a 2 year old who adores trains but I enjoyed reading it as well...I'm quite sure his 5 year old brother will enjoy it. unless you are an expert on trains I'd bet that you'll enjoy the photos and learn something you didn't know about trains !!!

Despite its title, this impressive book proves to be less the story of Galileo's elder daughter, the oldest of his three illegitimate children, and more the story of Galileo himself and his trial before the Inquisition for arguing that Earth moves around the Sun. That familiar tale is given a new slant by Sobel's translationAfor the first time into EnglishAof the 124 surviving letters to Galileo by his daughter, Suor Maria Celeste, a Clarisse nun who died at age 33; his letters to her are lost, presumably destroyed by Maria Celeste's convent after her death. Her letters may not in themselves justify a book; they are devout, full of pious love for the father she addresses as "Sire," only rarely offering information or insight. But Sobel uses them as the accompaniment to, rather than the core of, her story, sounding the element of faith and piety so often missing in other retellings of Galileo's story. I appreciated the historical value of this book. I have always heard about Galileo; however, as I got into the book, I realized I had no knowledge of his life and who he was as an individual. One hard fact in the book was that, according to the custom of the day and due to the fact that Gallileo could not provide dowries for his two daughters, they were placed in a convent. At ages between twelve and fourteen, they took their vows - and never left the convent again, nor saw their father except through an iron grate! The book is based on the correspondence between Galileo and his oldest daughter. Although his letters were destroyed, hers carried his story and revealed the great love and respect between the two. The author's phenominal research revealed the brilliance of Galileo's mind and the depth of his faith to pursue truth even though he was labeled a heretic, for which he endured great suffering.

This is more of a biography of Galileo through the eyes of his daughter Suor Maria Celeste than a true memoir of her life. What I liked best is Sobel's ability to illuminate daily life and preoccupations, even those of a respected mathematician, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Even Galileo had to worry about paying the mortgage, and his financial success depended on the whim of powerful men. It was fascinating to see how people tried to deal with scourges like the plague, including Maria Celeste's remedies combined with prayer.

I read this book when it came out and loved it. For some reason, though, I decided to read it again recently. I found the second read much more enjoyable than the first one.This book contains so much information on Galileo, his work, and daily life during the time. The way Sobel weaves in the daughter's letters is amazing. She brings in the church and convent life. Of course, the church plays a big role as Galileo ages.I love this book. It was well worth reading a second time. Sobel is a great writer and has the ability to give us the love between father and daughter.This book is doubly wonderful if you've visited Florence, Tuscany, Venice or Rome. Those areas play a big role in the book. If you have an interest in science then the book is even richer. Love it!!

Some parts were incredibly - don't put down the book - interesting while others no so needed. But on the whole they together created a word picture of the times and life in that period. I especially enjoyed the science connections and found the church impact critical to the story. Galileo was brilliant but brought to his knees by the church leaders. We know these facts in abstract and this was a great illustration.

If you haven't read about Galileo since the typical short historical introduction gained in high school, as I have, this book will be truly eye opening. The life of this scientist, astronomer and philosopher is full of intrigue and drama fit for a work of fiction. It is unbelievable that Galileo was able to accomplish so much given his life's experiences. The ability to meet him through the eyes of his equally impressive daughter and his colleagues makes this book a true gem. Don't miss it!

I mean, I don't blame her, she was locked up in a prison/convent, with nothing to read but the Bible. Which explains that every one of her letters talks about the Bible, the nuns health, and how much she loves her father with all the passion of Stockholm Syndrome. Basically those three things over and over through the whole book, gets really hard to finish.Read the wikipedia page instead, and the author's book Longitude.

I wanted to like this book but couldn't make it through to the end. I was hoping to learn more about Maria Celeste and less about Galileo and his quest to support Copernicus' theory of the Universe. That was interesting to a point but unless the reader was a student of physics or astronomy it was quite dry in places. The letters were works of art and written with such respect for her father but they were few and far between. I did feel, however, that it gave a clear picture of what it was like to be a female in the 1500's, very bleak indeed.

This was an interesting book to me, because I knew little of the history of that period of what became Italy, and little of Galileo's story. Much of the story is told through letters that his daughter wrote to him from her convent, with of course other documentation and some "Fill in the blanks guess work." The story of this genius as told here is a sad one, but he was a remarkable man and the book is definitely worth reading.
