Before reading this book, I would have to claim total ignorance of the Irish role in the Great War. Something to the tune of 50,000 Irishmen laid down their lives for the Allied cause, however, and while it may seem absurd knowing what we know now of Sinn Fein and the later tensions in Ireland, it should be remembered that the "Easter Uprising" hadn't even started when John F. Lucy signed up to fight. The Irish were in some sense eager to fight as a nation in order to prove their autonomy to the world.That's at the macro-level, though. "There's a Devil in the Drum" deals with the Great War and some of its greatest (in scale) battles, but it's a worm's eye view detailing the participation of one man and his ill-fated brother in the bloodbath. The book follows Lucy from his early innocence as a raw recruit, on into his almost-unheard-of promotion to the noncom ranks at the age of 21 (!), followed by a short time as an officer. The prose is lucid, unvarnished, and achieves the quality of sorrowful poetry especially in scenes of combat, which are naturally numerous. And on that subject, Lucy's recounting of warfare is about as vivid as it gets. He describes men un-spooling their intestines from their stomachs like field wire, suicide and mental breakdown in the trenches, all with a dose of sympathy for his fellow-sufferers' and nary an ounce of pity for himself. He actually destroyed his war diary at one point, burning it in a fit of pique and disgust, but his recall is eidetic despite that.During those short reprieves, leaves, and bits of convalescence he's able to sneak in, he becomes something of a soldier's version of Yeats on returning to Ireland, describing the countryside of the Emerald Isle as if it were a healing paradise.A perfect, unflinching look, at any rate, into the fires of hell. May Lucy's soul rest. Highest recommendation.

Irishman John Lucy has an astonishing eye to recount the human moments from his long military experience with the Royal Irish Rifles in the trenches of France. And what moments - being hilariously hazed in barracks before the war; digging the first trenches of the trench war; having his entire regiment wiped out TWICE; receiving battle promotions to corporal, to sergeant, to officer; a tense meeting with the firing squad Sergeant who executed the leaders of the Easter Rising; seeing the first tank battle ever at Cambrai, etc. etc. His point of view is unique — as an Irish Nationalist man joining just for employment/adventure, serving through hell with those from counties North and South, during a remarkable time in Ireland’s, and the world’s, history. It is as somehow if he were kept alive from the war, in order to be able to tell this full picture — of who was there with him during this time, and what they did. I will never forget this book. Read it, and you will not, either.

Fascinating story about Irish soldier John Francis Lucy who fought and kept a journal during the beginning through the end of WWI.John is a hero, and a man of valor, with bravery, honor, and a reverent spirit. The stories he tells are the most gruesome and terrible scenarios built out of turn of the century nightmares, but it is all true. After reading this novel I have had even more admiration for the brave men who fought in The Great War. As an American, we aren't taught nearly enough about this War and it's impacts, John Lucy's experience will stay with me forever, as a reminder and appreciation for the sacrifices our European brothers made.

I have read many autobiographies of World War 1 and this is one of the best. It is well written and the author has the unusual fortune to make it almost through the entire war; An almost unheard of accomplishment by a front line soldier. A must read!

It should be 'require' reading for any student of the 1st World War. This is a no nonsense factual account of a soldiers 'lot', from the opening phases of mobile open warfare through to the static years of trench life. It describes the death agonies of the "Old contemptibles' and the birth of Britains Citizen Armies.Breathtaking well written book I can commend and really all should read this.

This book was enthralling; I couldn't put it down. A very candid glimpse from a point of view that one doesn't get from military history text books. It is a definite must to supplement one's study of the Great War, and accessible enough for a novice at history, like myself.

Together they work to unravel the mysterious death of a beautiful girl, an old case thought long solved.This isn't Prime Suspect. Although Trudy faces sexist biases, she's upbeat and determined, plowing ahead full of hope for the future. A Fatal Obsession is a light, engaging read with virtually no violence and not much suspense. Martin introduces a large cast of well-drawn characters and interweaves their stories around two separate crimes. Her depiction of postwar England and the British class system feels authentic.As the series develops, Trudy will hopefully mature and become a more complex character. Will be interesting to see if the author chooses to keep pairing her with the Sherlock Holmes style Clement Ryder, hanging on to his job as coroner by concealing his debilitating disease.

Not only is this novel set in 1960s England, it could have been written in 1960s England. The language and word selection are very period appropriate as well. This trends toward more of a literary experience than an action-packed crime novel. If you expect it to get off to a blazing start and pickup up speed you'll be disappointed. But a well-written book with great character depth, I highly recommend. My only one-star-deduction quibble was with the point of view with the author jumping from one character's head to another within chapters. The jump is cued by a paragraph break, but I found some of them to be unnecessary and the jumps in total to be excessive. I plan to read the next one in this series and, as this was my first experience with this author, will check out some of her other work.

I was a huge fan of the Hillary Greene series by Faith Martin. My area of interest is English Female Police Procedurals & Faith Martin is the best author in this genre. I had almost given up hope of seeing a new series when I was notified about A Fatal Obsession. Totally different than her previous series, this book follows Trudy Loveday, a WPC in the 1960's, and her collaboration with an elderly coroner. It is an welcome start to a new series with excellent writing and a well thought out mystery. I highly recommend the book. As an aside, many years ago, I e-mailed a fan letter to Ms. Martin, through her publisher, telling her how much I enjoyed the Hillary Greene series. To my amazement, I received the most gracious handwritten letter. So again, I am proud to be a fan of her writing.

Oh dear - I'm on page 194 of Obsession and I'm not getting it yet. If I were this far into a Hilary Greene book the time would have flown by and is I would be more than hooked! I don't know why but I was under the impression this was a "prequil" to the HG series not a new series. I'm keeping an open mind though and I'll update when I'm done. Hopefully my update will contradict what I feel so far.😦

A brand new heroine with potential but the book starts slowly, so slowly that I nearly gave up. Yet there is a fiendishly clever plot and one unusual sleuth. The story picks up speed at half mark, but the ending is both abrupt and a little too pat. Spoiler - or not - I had a hunch about it. Hopefully the second installment will be better.

A charming beginning to a new series, A Fatal Obsession introduces young Trudy Loveday and an older Dr Ryder, an unlikely pair who together solve a murder that stymied everyone else. I loved Faith Martin's Hillary Greene series, and this novel is constructed with all the skill shown in those novels. In the current book, rather than a mature detective at the peak of her skills, Martin creates a young, fledgling WPC, bright but still learning, with a crusty mentor eager to train her. Her bright eagerness acts as a foil for his acquired ability to read people and know when they are lying. It is a very promising dynamic that I look forward to seeing further developed in future volumes.

I loved the Hillary Greene series which was unique because it featured a successful middle aged woman detective. The characters were all well developed and the mysteries compelling. So I was completely disappointed with this new series with not very interesting main characters and a mystery that felt forced.

I was finding the Hillary Greene novels too repetitive, relating to other characters and items left over from previous novels. I thought why not try this novel from her new series but was very disappointed. The characters were more in line with an Agatha Christie novel and I thought the culprit was obvious from the start. I wouldn't recommend this book.

About the Author

John Kania obtained his Bachelor Arts degree in Anthropology from the University of Minnesota in 1969; Moving to California six years later, he there became inspired by the rich body of Native American basketry produced by the numerous tribes in that state. His research into basketry began at that time. In 1981 he opened a gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he continues to reside, In 2004 he presented a paper on the origins of Chemehuevi basketry to the Great Basin Anthropological Conference, and in 2008 he presented an additional paper to that some body on the weavers of Victorville, California. He is the author of two articles on Chemehuevi basketry, which appeared in American Indian Art Magazine (Scottsdale, Arizona) in 2006 and in 2007.
