Jack McCallum takes the reader behind the scenes as he tells you just how it was! 'The Dream Team' is a fascinating story of the reputation that was as remarkable as that of 'Elvis.' The story is not only a gem in itself, but is refreshing and funny. A riveting story of how one team climbed the ladder to success. Interesting and Highly Recommended!

I purchased this book thinking it was the definitive product on the market relating to the greatest team ever assembled. Truth is, it's not. While the book does give a lot of inside stories and tell you things you may not have known behind the scenes, it pushes more into the realm of an autobiography of Magic, Bird, Jordan, Barkley, and... if you can believe it... Isiah Thomas, who didn't even make the team.Sure there is a chapter here and there about Drexler or Stockton, but the majority of that information is how these players relate to the 5 listed above. There are nearly a dozen chapters talking about why Thomas didn't make the team and only one on Drexler making it as an add-on. You will wade through chapter after chapter about Magic and Bird and what their non-basketball lives were like to get to one chapter about the team playing basketball -- with a heavy focus on those two, Jordan, and Barkley.Maybe the author didn't get enough time with all of the Dream Team squad. From the writing, it certainly read that way. Or maybe he purposely kept to these 4 members so he can't speak about the others because he wasn't around them. Either way, there are many approaches to take when talking about the Dream Team and its 12 players; however, if you read this book you'll forget who at least 8 of them were and incorrectly assume Thomas was a member because there is so much focus about it.

I was finally able to pick up Jack McCallum's Dream Team book which was published in 2013. I've looked forward to this for quite a while and snagged a used book through Amazon. The book chronicles the 1992 Dream Team which allowed NBA players to participate in the Olympics for the first time as a reaction to college players not winning gold in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. McCallum doesn't disappoint as he chronicles the forming of the team, the behind the scenes that made that possible, the marketing, international impacts and most importantly the players themselves. From who wanted to be on the team, to who was selected and why, their relationships and stardom in Barcelona that transcended the lives these players already lived. I love the back stories the behind the scenes goodies and this book delivered.About the only thing this book won't provide is detailed analysis of the games themselves but they don't deserver to be front and center. They weren't as important as the players and the stories. The one game that stands out the most when the Dream Team is brought up is a scrimmage the team had which pitted Michael Jordan dueling Magic Johnson. That was more important than the drubbing the team laid upon opponent after opponent. Bottom line is I loved this book. If you are an NBA fan of any sort this is an easy read. The world's greatest players were on this team. All, sans college player Christian Laettner, were future hall of famers and had either led the revival of the NBA (Magic Johnson and Larry Bird) or helped build on the momentum through 1992. But not only were they great players, many were great personalities. Some were exactly as I've known (John Stockton, Chris Mullin) but some surprised me some (Patrick Ewing). It was great getting to know these players on a different level. McCallum spoke to every player, coach, executive, competitor, or other writers who could bring the story more to life. And it came together wonderfully. Every NBA fan needs to read this book.

As an avid basketball fan and player, I loved this book. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who has a love for the game. If you are not a basketball fan, this probably is not the book for you.Jack McCallum had the unique opportunity to ride along with the Dream Team through its wild ups and (very few) downs. His firsthand accord of what happened in practices, games, and locker rooms is fantastic. He obviously established personal relationships with most of the players on the team. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Christian Laettner and Scottie Pippen. His details about the coaching staff (especially Coach K) kept me itching for more. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for a reporter, and McCallum perspicaciously soaked it all in.The writing in the book is very strong. His use of prose and varying sentence structure was refreshing. As a reader, you could tell this isnt the writer's first rodeo. The only thing I would change would be the length of the book. Certain chapters ran a little long, but didnt necessarily take away from the enjoyment of the book.

More than enough has been written, spoken and shown about the Dream Team. But this book captures the essence of what the experience was like to the players, the fans, the journalists, the invested and peripheral people and entities involved.The writing comes across as genuine and while there is most definitely a reverential tone in the pages that talk about Magic, Michael and Larry and a bit of the lovable goof with Sir Charles, there is also a realness to it....The fact that I refer to them all on a first name basis in the paragraph above is proof enough that the book engaged me and personalised many of the players involved and really make you as the reader feel that you are understanding these great athletes as people.

Absolutely one of the GREATEST BOOKS I've ever read. Stories, all the background information I never knew about the Dream Team and how it was constructed. Just fascinating to me, as I was a huge Bulls fans and was really just getting into basketball around this time. Isaiah Thomas really plays a factor in a book, interesting to see how it all plays out.

This fine and informative book describes 100 books which were "banned" for different reasons, including content and belief. I believe that "banned" is too strong of a word. Something like "restricted" is more appropriate, since none of these books were actually removed from print or circulation.The book is arranged into four sections: literature suppressed on political grounds, literature suppressed on religious grounds, literature suppressed on sexual grounds, and literature suppressed on social grounds. Each section contains approximately twenty banned books. Such classics as "Fahrenheit 451", Lolita", "Naked Lunch", and "A Clockwork Orange" are included in the list.Each banned book is briefly summarized, along with information about the author, original date and place of publication, and literary form. A censorship history is also included which describes the various efforts to have the book blocked from view. The further readings section gives the reader a list of other areas to search for more information about the book.I used this book for a Master's degree course in library science, and it was extremely helpful. The summary gives just enough information so the reader can understand the book without having to read it in its entireity. The censorship history section helps the reader understand the efforts to have the book removed from public access.As a student of library science, I feel that no book should be censored. This is a violation of intellectual freedom and it denies the individual the right to read what they choose to. Books are the backbone of knowledge and learning, and they should never, for any reason, be kept out of people's hands. I highly recommend this fine book. The information contained inside is extremely valuable to the understanding of censorship. The books contained inside are relatively mild compared to some of the books being published today. If you are interested in censorship or learning more about banned books, then be sure to read this fine book.

Censure is a human ‘quality’ which exists ever since the origin of the human species and it continues to be, more than ever, one of the main human scourges in all the media all over the world.It is imposed by those at the top on all those beneath them in order to consolidate the powers in place, be they political, religious, economical, social, educational, racial, parental or sexual (gender).It is nothing less than a deadly fight between the censors and the censured, for as K. Wachsberger states: ‘censored authors have been verbally abused, physically attacked, shunned by their families and communities, ex-communicated from their religious congregations, and shot, hanged or burned at the stake by their enemies.’The most important text in this volume is a speech from the 17th century for the liberty of unlicensed printing: the ‘Aeropagitica’ by John Milton. Milton states ‘that the power of determining what was true and what was false, what ought to be published and what to be suppressed, might no longer be entrusted to a few illiterate and illiberal individuals.’ He also gives the reason for the great concern of those in power about the contents of books: ‘for books are not absolutely dead things, but do contain a potency of life.’ In ‘The Critic as Artist’ Oscar Wilde (not mentioned here) goes even further and explains clearly why art is so dangerous: ‘For when a work is finished it has as it were, an independent life of its own, and may deliver a message far other than that which was put into its lips.’There is also an essential hypocritical aspect in all the controversies. In the censorship history of the novel ‘Andersonville’ by MacKinlay Kantor, Pastor Fred Ohler poses the fundamental rhetorical question: ‘why is immorality seen only as profanity and sexuality … and the larger issues of grinding poverty and social misjustice, or adult hypocrisy, of war camp atrocities never faced?’The list of banned books contains a very large spectrum of written texts, from the Bible and the Koran, over ‘The Rights of Man’ by Thomas Paine and ‘On the Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin, to “Howl and Other Poems’ by Allen Ginsberg.A few examples: ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck was attacked because ‘the novel contains crude heroes who speak vulgar language and whose experiences exhibit a sadly deficient social system in the United States’.Kurt Vonnegut’s masterpiece ‘Slaughterhouse-Five’ was censored for ‘obscenity, vulgarity, vulgar language, violence, bathroom language, ‘R-rated’ language, un-Godliness, immoral subject manner, cruelty, language that is ‘too modern’ or an ‘unpatriotic’ portrayal of war’.The volume gives for each book summary, sometimes short illustrative excerpts, and a censorship history. First off, the blurb intrigued me. You know how you read a blurb and it's like oh this is going to be so good. But when you read it, it almost feels lacking, like it did not measure up to the awesome blurb? Not here. Mila Young did an amazing job of creating a world, and characters that totally drew me in. Second, I finished this in one sitting. I just could not put this down.Taking Breath we have our main female lead ,Caeli, who is living in a world where a virus has taken out a huge chunk of the population. What is left, are left with powers. Worse yet, women are tools to be used by men who feed off of their powers to make them stronger. When she is captured trying to get medicine for a friend, she is struggling with trying to escape. When she is rescued by three strangers with fire in their eyes. She traded one master for three others. What happens next will keep you just as intrigued as I was. Watch as she comes to terms with whose side she will be on, that maybe she needs these three men, just as much as they need her. Trust me, it is well worth the read.

I will admit, dark isn't usually my genre and I was on the fence about this book. I am so glad I gave it a chance. It drew me in and wouldn't let me go. I absolutely loved it. It was dark, gritty, and steamy. The characters were amazingly written, and the world building was superb. I am 100% invested in these characters. They have all struggled in life, been beaten down, but they didn't stop fighting to survive. They didn't stop hoping for a better world. The villains were truly despicable characters, and I can't wait for them to die a painful death. While the book is a dark fantasy, it was well balanced, and there were little things that made me laugh. I will definitely be following this series.*I received an ARC copy of this book.

OMG Mila Young has written an exciting start to this series. This is darker read to her other books but as soon as I started reading I was completely invested in the story and the characters! The characters are all intense, tormented, vulnerable and emotionally connected. I can’t wait to get to know all of them more as the story continues...the guys are all dark and unsympathetic but there is hope for them, hope for them to love Caeli and to care for her instead of using her...but Monk, oh wow, my favourite and the one who is frustrating to me!! Mila Young has written a fantastic start to what I can see is going to be an intriguing series! Highly recommended.

What an intriguing new world Mila has created this time. A virus has taken out a large chunk of the world leaving behind survivors that develop powers. Woman are tools to be used as the men can feed off of their power making them stronger and more powerful. This is a dark RH romance novel that introduces us to Caeli just as she gets taken first by bad men and then rescued by a group of three that may end up not being as bad. Lots of danger, intrigue, and surprise mixed into each page that will keep you reading until you essentially run out of book. Great start to a new series. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

An exciting start to a new series, Taking Breath, is truly unlike anything I’ve ever read! A virus has killed a large portion of the world population, and those that are left have been changed. Women are nothing more than property to be used as a boost of power for those that are in control. Caeli finds herself caught, and it changes the course of her life completely. Absolutely couldn’t put it down!! I look forward to reading more!!

Another satisfying read from an amazing author. This book is intense and filled with action, suspense, drama, horror and romance. I look forward to the next book in this series.

This was a good start to a new series. It has a good plot and fantastic characters it needed more though. More than half the book she was a prisoner.
