Matt Fraction creates an Invincible Iron Man. This 'Omnibus' contains the first 19 comics/volumes 1-3 of the books. I've read a handful of other Iron Man stories, but I think I enjoyed this most of all. This book contains three stories. The first story is about Tony Stark and his function as Iron Man and the director S.H.I.E.L.D.. A low-yield nuclear bomb goes off in Africa, only come to find evidence the bomb was made by stark industries. Tony takes on his nightmares by fighting a stronger, faster, and more advanced Ezekial Stane. The outcome of all evil also changes the life of Pepper Potts forever! The rest of the book contains The Worlds Most Wanted series, parts 1&2. After the Skrull invasion, Tony finds himself literally picking up the pieces of what used to be Stark Industries. After being cast out of S.H.I.E.L.D., Tony is now a fugitive, being hunted down by Norman Osborn, Commander of H.A.M.M.E.R.. Tony knows what information Osborn wants. Although the only place this information exists is in a secret stark file which is being delivered to Captain America by Black Widow, and the rest is steadily being erased from the back of Tony's mind, personally! Thankfully both Tony and Iron Man have friends in high places! This series is near perfection, in both aspects of storyline and illustration. A great buy and plan to continue the series with the second 'omnibus'. I give Invincible Iron Man 4.8/5 stars.

With the Secret Invasion event coming to a close and a new Iron Man movie coming up on the horizon, Marvel felt it was a good time to launch a new on-going Iron Man book, making this the second Iron Man book on the bookshelves at the time of its original publication. The timing was good for this release, and they were able to secure a great creative team for the book in the trio of writer Matt Fraction, Spanish comic artist Salvador Larroca, and colorist Frank D'Armata . At the time the original series debuted, I was already familiar with all of these creative talents. I had been reading Fraction's work in the The Immortal Iron Fist, Vol. 1: The Last Iron Fist Story series, had the pleasure of viewing Frank's outstanding coloring work in Annihilation: Conquest Book 1 (Bk. 1), and had fond memories of Larocca's great artwork during his tenure illustrating the X-Treme X-Men, Vol. 1: Destiny (Xtreme) series. Thus, I had a lot of faith that this series would turn out to be worth my while and above average. Happily, I was correct about this.(Spoilers Ahead!)At the outset of the series, Tony finds himself on the run from an unlikely group - namely the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization that he used to run. (For more on this, you can read the book Iron Man: Director of S. H. I. E. L. D. -- with Iron Hands.) At the end of Secret Invasion, Norman Osborn appears to the world as a hero and is given the authority to take over S.H.I.E.L.D., which he re-names H.A.M.M.E.R. Eager to take full advantage of this group and its enormous resources of both military firepower and classified information, Norman has clear plans for Tony Stark, who he labels as a traitor and a failure. Knowing Norman's intentions for him, Tony sets in motion a plan to deny Norman access to both classified information that could endanger his friends and access to his Iron Man suits.As Tony races across the planet, one step ahead of Norman Osborn and his henchmen, he attempts to destroy all of his Iron Man suits in all of his secret bases. Because Tony (and Norman) consider Tony's great intelligence and own personal knowledge his greatest asset, Tony also begins a sort of erasure of his own brain. A great start to a new series. I just hope they can continue to flourish throughout their entire run on this series.One final thing I'd like to mention: This book, unlike most Marvel omnibus editions, is not clad in a black hardcover. Instead, it has been packaged in a blood-red hardcover with gold lettering. It's a small, but very welcome detail that adds more value to this book. While I enjoyed the first Iron Man movie, it wasn't enough to make me go and pick up the comics. A friend gave me a few issues after I read Extremis (I love Warren Ellis' work) I found Fraction's run to be a damn good story. Keep in mind though, I haven't been following Iron Man, nor really cared about him as a character in a long time. I used to watch the Marvel Cartoon Hour as a kid, and I enjoyed Stark as the sometimes leader of the Avengers during Busick's run back in the late 90s.The biggest thing I liked about the first arc was that it didn't require you to know the in depth history of Tony Stark. While I had some inklings it gave you enough hints and flat out said/reminded you of the parts you did need to know. The other part is that it was it's own book. In a industry where the majority of the big name titles are involved in "Summer Crossover XII" and your favorite comics are interrupted to take part in the mindless crap that the majority of the crossovers are, this one did not directly get involved in those.Instead we're treated to Stark dealing with not just another tech/gimmicky enemy, but someone who's created a new type of Iron Man based tech, and gone beyond the typical suit of armor. I found this very interesting, especially the way they explain all the little psuedo-scientific ways it breaks down and works. Another nice little benchmark in this comic is there is actual drama and tension and you feel for these characters. The idea of Tony dealing with his fears and seemingly actually weighing him down is great to read. Again, I'm new to Iron Man, so if someone has done it better than Fraction, good for them, but I'm just reviewing the book I did read.The second arc does deal with the 'summer crisis crossover infinity' bit, but it does it in a smooth transitioned way. The character isn't simply thrown at aliens or other heroes in a mindless conflict. He's dealing with losing his mind, literally. There is a bit more of a focus on Pepper Potts and her being a heroine, and Maria Hill being a badass field agent fighting against an entire agency sent to capture her. The change in dynamic between the 3 people being heroes and comfortable to fugitives almost constantly on the run is a fun transition to watch and read as well.Tony Stark still comes off as a smarmy know it all playboy who wants to do good for the world, even if the world doesn't want to be good. The cast of characters are a group you care about and want to know what happens next. It's a comic book hero so you know things are going to turn out alright (for the most part) but how you get to 'alright' is a damn good trip.

Told from the point of view of one family, this book beautifully paints a picture of Syria before and during the protests that threatened the Bashaar regime. These protests, though peaceful to begin with, became violent when the Syrian military killed peaceful protesters began using tear gas, and then bullets, to deter protesters. As an all out war broke out in Syria, many became refugees.This is the story of one such family. As you read, you learn what a typical Syrian family is like--an insight into the family organization and values.Their journey to Egypt is one of the earlier ones and is in stark contrast to those that came later. Reading about Doaa and her fiancé and their desire to build a better future is a story we can all connect with--and the lengths they go to to get there are lengths many of us would go to as well. To be free, to leave a war torn country behind, to find work and make a good and honest living, to support an extended family....these are honorable dreams.What happens next is horrific and no one deserves the massacre that follows. I finished this book after reading several they books (mostly focusing on refugee camps) and am now, more than ever, moved to do more for refugees in my country and abroad. My heart goes out to Doaa and millions like her. I am thankful for this book and the way it was written--a story told to open hearts and minds.

If you are looking for a book that poignantly captures one of the largest humanitarian crises of our time through the lens of one young Syrian refugee's experience - this is the book for you. Reading Melissa Fleming’s book about the challenges Doaa faced in fleeing violence in Syria comes at an interesting time with Trump blocking immigration for Syrian refugees after they go through a 2 year screening to eliminate potential terrorists. (Doaa’s story is not about getting into the USA, but a safe passage to Europe). Naturally we have all heard about the plight of the Syrians, but only after you take the time to understand what Assad has done to his people do you get the full understanding of why Assad needs to be taken out, or face crimes against humanity. And to think that he was educate in the UK! My hope is that by reading Doaa’s account, Americans will have a greater degree of compassion for immigrants from war torn countries, or those ruled by despots. For the record, I am an immigrant having arrived in the US 30 years ago. I understand the challenge of settling into a new society, even though my home language is English.

This book does a lot of things very well: impart empathy onto the reader, tell the story of someone who endured incredible loss with incredible bravery, and allow the reader to step inside someone else's shoes and consider what they would've done in their situation. Though the prose is a tiny bit clunky, the plot is so astounding that I still tore through this book in less than a week.

I'm halfway through this book. It is from the point of view of a young girl and then the same girl as a young woman. It shows so clearly that her family as so many others just wanted to make a living and buy food and take care of their families. But the government totally annihilated everything. The government brought tanks and started to demolish building that people were still living in. This family did not want to leave Syria but if they stayed they were afraid that they would be killed or worse. It is heartbreaking but told in a way that is very easy to read. I'm learning a lot from this book. About how this never ending war started and why it continues and how all the refugees would love nothing more than to go home but it's all been destroyed. At least their home towns have been destroyed. I'm at the point in the book where the heroine is just getting on the boat to try and get to Europe. Very nervous about this.

Highly recommend. Doaa's story is wonderfully told in a way that will keep you turning pages while gaining a better understanding of what was really going on in Syria to lead to such a refugee crisis. Buy this book, read it, then pass it on to a friend.

This is one of the most powerful stories I have ever read. This is the story of a refugee that we don’t hear and that we need to hear. Doaa Al Zamel’s courage and strength are enough to inspire us all and give us a context in which to place the debate about refugees and compassion.The writing is a bit awkward at times, but Doaa’s story more than makes up for that. I am grateful that she had the courage to share it with the world and that Fleming understood that we needed to hear it.

Over the pass five years I have been trying to get a really good grasp on SEO. I have read a number of books on the subject at the same time as taking courses so I had a basic understanding of what needed to be done. So I really was looking for a book that filled in the blanks on the missing pieces along with bringing me up to date on the latest changes. This book has given me just what I needed. It is written in a down to earth matter for those of us who did not grow up with technology and gives a step by step plan on how to get to the top of the search engine results. I strongly recommend it for both the website owner who wants to do his/her own SEO along with those who want to perfect their skills like I did.

I did not know until I started reading this book, how very little I actually knew about the inner workings of SEO and how much is involved in getting to the top of Google. This is a great book for those who want to know more as well as a great do it yourself manual.

I've only gone about 35% of the way after downloading this late last night, but I felt compelled to write a review this morning. Even if I had been charged for this book, I would still give it five stars. As a beginner, it makes the process of SEO very easy to understand and I must say a great deal of it makes perfect sense. The Author, though he says he's not an author, writes in easy language and if jargon is introduced, it is well explained.Ok, I take someone's point here, there are a few weblinks peppered in there, but hey, you got it for free. I can't wait to try out the techniques described in this publication and though I know there is a lot of work involved, I feel sure that world domination is at hand for the small business where I work!!!

Truth be told, I've build, maintained and managed our small business's website for over 10 years now. During those years I heard and read a lot of advice on how to improve our ranking in Google search. Some of it was very basic and was valid 10 years ago, but not anymore. Some of it sounded tricky and unfair.Recently we've decided to outsource the entire remake of our website. To a small company led by a SEO specialist. He gave me a one hour 'course' on SEO, so that I could rework all of our previous blogposts that will be integrated in the new website. So as to not lose the blog content built over the years.Everything he said is confirmed by this book. And the book adds even a bit more to it.Furthermore, it works. I've tested some of the ideas, suggestions and methods on my current website and in one case (granted for a long tail search consisting of 3 words) got to occupy all of the top 4 positions on Google's first results page.For another single search term I move up from somewhere down on page 5 of the Google search results to 7th position on the first page. With only 1 single SEO optimized blog post.Now that's what I call results.So even though a lot of what is said in this book might be available for free on the web, you'll have a hard time finding it and checking out it's validity if you have to search and collect it yourself.The author deserves that you buy his book and you'll be happy once you start using his advice.

Hi,I read the entire book(plus bonus)in one go which took few hours.The author is selfless in revealing all the important information.Its useful to any website/blog owner (small business or not) to get new clientsor gain credibility in local /national area.Any business would be benefited by it.Author's credibility is enhanced by the information that his clients show up in first place in google results for their trade+locality combination.Though there are other seo books in this market I cannot verify this for any other author.Further I noticed that one of the reviewer's website has been showed in google results as first entry for his trade. It seems he followed author's advice step by step exactly.I am a full time web developer for past 15 years who did not have marketing knowledge before reading this book.I will exactly follow this ebook and modify my websites and add google plus,video etc accordingly.Particularly after reading the bonus ebook I see that no local biz uses google plus/video . They are not listed for any keyword combination.Possibilities are infinite. Thanks to the author .regardsvinodh

I haven't quite finished reading the book, but I am close to the end. The book is really a guided tour for migrating to using VSTO in Visual Studio to program for Excel in VB.Net, as a successor to VBA. The book is not intended to teach VB.Net or Visual Studio, but just to hilight the migration path for Excel VBA programmers to move to VSTO in Visual Studio using VB.Net. The book assumes a knowledge of Excel VBA, as well as VB.Net, that is beyond my background, which is limited to mathematical programming for mechanical engineering, so a fair portion of what the author presented was not entirely intelligible to me (particularly the database programming). I understood what he was trying to do in his coding examples, but the syntax was not dissected in a manner that a true teaching textbook would have done. However, I knew this going in, and it served my purpose, by quickly targeting the topics I will need to learn in order to upgrade my Excel VBA programming skills to VSTO. I am in the process of beginning to learn VB.Net from other books, and I now know what to focus on. Hopefully, the authors of beginning-intermediate Excel VBA programming books will soon update their books to VSTO for VB.Net, which will provide a more accessible upgrade path for Excel VBA mechanical engineering programmers. I think that Microsoft is the holdup here, because they haven't committed to providing VSTA (Visual Studio Tools for Applications) built in to Microsoft Office, like they provide VBA built-in, and until they do, VSTO and VB.Net will not become the mass-market alternative to Excel VBA, that will attract authors to revise their Excel VBA training books to VSTO for VB.Net.

Does not cover Office 2013, too old dated. Excel objects have changed over the various Office releases, very hard to relate to latest Office 2013 release.

The book does a great job at helping an accountant make the transition between VBA and VSTO, which is not an easy thing. It is written a good level, you don't have to be a PROGRAMMER to understand it.If your company is thinking about making the transition to the newer version of Microsoft Office, this will eliminate VBA, so you need this book.

It exactly for developers who working with excel as platform for programing and want start using actual languages as vb.net,this book contain table with code in VBA near the same code in VB.NET - it great idea !!

If you are considering the move from VBA to VSTO, then you will want to have this book.Amazon's shipper got it to me without delay.

I had high hopes for this book, because the author is a great researcher and lecturer. However this book does not reflect his usual high standard.The beginning is terrible. He shows four graphs to illustrate scaling relationships, none of which have intelligible scales. I received an advance uncorrected copy, so perhaps some of the issues will be corrected in the final version, but the flaws run deeper than typographic.All the charts have log-log scales, although they are labeled in three different formats--scientific notation, exponent only or integer. There's an old saying that everything looks linear in log-log plots. The reason that even a very large deviation in ratio of vertical to horizontal variable will look small if the range of the vertical variable is large. For example, the graph of "number of patents" versus "population" shows ratios that range from about 5 patents per capita to 200. No one would say that illustrates some universal law is in operation. But the vertical scale runs from population of 10,000 to 3.2 billion, 4.5 orders of magnitude, and that dwarfs the variation in patents per capita so things look linear. Standard statistical tests do not show linearity.Another problem with this chart is there is no explanation of how either variable is defined. You can't talk about scale in isolation from what is being measured. It's true there is a citation to the original work (although not a very helpful one). But it turns out that does not support the linearity the author of book claims, the whole point of the chart is to show that larger cities have more patents per capita than smaller ones, and says explicitly that the relation is non-linear. So the chart in the book is not only misleading by construction, it conveys the wrong idea.Another chart shows number of heartbeats per lifetime of "animals" versus weight. It looks constant, because the range seems to be about 30 million to 150 million, but the vertical scale runs from 100 to one trillion. "Animals" turns out to be a few selected mammals (whales are listed twice with different values). If you go to the paper, the author emphasizes that the interest is in the deviations from the typical relation shown by the animals on the chart; the chart only shows the typical animals. So far from a universal constant in nature, we find that a subset of mammals happen to have values within a factor of five, with other mammals and non-mammals outside that range, but missing from the chart even though the vertical axis is scaled to accommodate them.A better chart shows metabolic rate versus weight (here labeled "mass" despite being the same scale as the previous graph). This includes selected mammals and birds, and does illustrate rough linearity in log-log space. But here the main interest is in the slope of the line rather than the linearity. Metabolic rate increases not linearly with mass but at about the 3/4 or perhaps 2/3 power. This is key, because a lot of things also go up with powers of mass and people disagree on which ones of them are important for setting the metabolic rate.Finally, there is a chart purporting to show that net income and assets of companies are linear in log-log space with number of employees. This is clearly nonsense. Technology companies often have hundreds of thousands of dollars of net income per employee, and few assets, while retailers have an order of magnitude lower profits per employee but much higher assets. There are companies that own and lease things with huge assets and few employees, and service companies that own nothing but a few desks and computers with many employees. It turns out if you read the notes at the back of the book that the 22 points are actually averages of over 30,000 companies (by the way, page, chapter and figure numbers are wrong in the notes, but I assume this will be corrected before publication). So all the chart tells us is when you average over large numbers of companies of different types but similar size, you get similar relations of employees to income and assets as the average for large numbers of companies of a different size.It's not just the charts. Also in the first few pages, the author is hyperventilating about the "exponential rate of urbanization" that has increased the proportion of US residents who live in cities from 4% 200 years ago to 80% today and is an "impending tsunami with the potential to overwhelm us." A few seconds reflection shows the absurdity of that. If the urbanization rate is exponential, and has increased by a factor of 20 in 200 years, then in 15 years we'll be at 100% and the "tsunami" will stall.Now I know most people think "exponential" means fast, but most theoretical physicists, and certainly the author, know better. It just means that the rate of increase is proportional to the level. Nothing in the physical universe is exponential and fast. Things can start out exponential, like a fire that spreads faster the larger it grows. But that fire eventually uses up available fuel and oxygen and goes out. Urbanization in the US since 1790 fits a near perfect Gompertz trend with an asymptote at about 83% (that doesn't mean I predict urbanization will stabilize at 83%, drawing curves from the past is a dangerous way to predict the future, but at least a curve that fits the data is better than one that is clearly inconsistent with the data). Gompertz trends frequently give reasonable fits to data, exponential curves never do for very long.Another wildly false scare sentence is, "It is only relatively recently that we have become conscious of global warming, long-term environmental changes, limitations on energy, water, and other resources, health and pollution issues, stability of financial markets, and so on." Take those one at a time. Global warming started in the mid-1970s, before that the Earth was cooling (you could push it back to the 1950s, but the 1950s were cooler than the 1940s; note that I'm not saying that greenhouse emissions were not affecting the global temperature before 1970, just that the Earth was not warming overall). It was not only noticed immediately, before clear statistical evidence of the trend emerged, it had been predicted long before.People have always been aware of "limitations on energy, water and other resources," and our supply of resources is far greater than at any time in the past. Health? People didn't know about sickness and death until recently? Pollution? The ancient Romans griped and sued about gravioris caeli and infamis aer, and Seneca wrote “No sooner had I left behind the oppressive atmosphere of. . .[Rome] and that reek of smoking cookers which pour out, along with clouds of ashes, all the poisonous fumes they’ve accumulated in their interiors whenever they’re started up, that I noticed the change in my condition.” Pollution has been a major political issue in Europe for nearly 1,000 years. People have known about instability in financial markets as long as there have been financial markets, and every expansion of markets since has been accompanied by periods of instability and crisis.After all this, only my respect for the author kept me going. The book gets quite a bit better when it leaves off the foolishness of the beginning and discusses specific topics with precision and insight. Nevertheless, I was overall disappointed by the book. It is repetitious and bloated. It tries to cover too many topics and relate them all to each other, often in strained ways. It mixes solid research with press release studies and outdated speculations. The notes are not as helpful as they should be, few of them have any explanation, many are just names of authors or books with no clue about how to find the specific support for the cited claim. There is not a clear distinction between patterns that occur for mathematical reasons--things like Fibonacci numbers, inverse square laws, Gompertz trends, fractal scaling and power laws--versus mathematical patterns that result from top down constraints. There is a lot of first-rate material as well, but it's not packaged well.Overall, I would recommend this book to people who are well versed in these subjects, with the patience to wade through on overlong and repetitious book for the good parts. The author is the undeniable world expert some of these things, and they are very important things to understand. Readers who are new to these ideas are likely to be misinformed, although probably entertained. Readers who are not patient should look for a better exposition.

This is a very intriguing book. My own interests relate to the efforts at understanding the longevity and mortality of companies and non-profit enterprises. Surprisingly little good work has been done in this area. Compared with the multitude of research in business and finance, the study of company or industry "demographics" is negligible.I believe there may be discoverable general principles, including mathematical ones, underlying the rise and fall of companies and industries. But I found little real insight here.In looking at companies, the author claims they "die" when liquidated, bankrupt, acquired, or merged. But of course many enterprises continue to grow and prosper after a merger. The vast majority of US railroads no longer exist, having consolidated from thousands to about 5 majors. Some like the Milwaukee Road and Rock Island indeed died, but the mainlines of most of the big roads of 60 years ago are busier than ever today.....with a fraction of the employees.The author also limits the study to public companies, which are somewhat less important than even 20 years ago. LBO's, Private Equity, and Sarbanes-Oxley have conspired to reduce the number of public companies. We have more private giants than ever, joined by those who have always been private like Publix, Mars, and Cargill.The book claims that the odds of a company lasting 200 years are zero, and that the few exceptions are tiny companies. Yet some US banks (e.g., Citigroup) and insurance companies have made it. Procter & Gamble and John Deere are just 20 years shy of 200, both having been founded in 1837. And what of our large non-profit corporations? What about Harvard is different? It has metabolism and maintenance like any other economic organism, to use the language of the book.I think trying to understand companies from massive averaged datasets, without looking at the actual facts, is a slippery slope. Sometimes companies (like Sears) change names, sometimes they reincorporate, sometimes they are acquired but are in effect the surviving corporations. Did AT&T die when SBC, its own child, bought it? Is CSX the continuation of The Chessie System or The Family Lines? Did BNSF die when Berkshire Hathaway bought it? Was Agilent born when HP spun it out? You have to really look at the specifics. The same applies to any survival studies of the Fortune 500, which I have been following since 1963.I imagine the book's approach might be much more successful (and insightful) had the author studied products or industries rather than companies. Data on the production of commodities (from steel to education to rail freight) are readily available. They include the production of all enterprises, including private companies. Time series are often available for much longer than the 59 years used on public companies in this book. And ultimately all companies (and the economy at large) are built on the rise and fall of buggy whips and smartphones.The book makes you think. I am glad I bought it. But take at least parts of it with a big grain of salt.

When first opening this book, I was surprised at how small the painting examples are. I'm also unhappy with the quality of the paintings. The author describes them with positive words, but many of them are messy and unattractive. They are quite uninspiring to the beginning painter.In the section for "collage," the author presents paintings that are only partial collage. She says about one example, "Although this work on paper contains elements of collage, the artist prefers to describe it as a mixed-media painting." For another example she says "Here collage has been used in certain areas of the painting to create additional texture..." The photos of these "partial collage" paintings don't show any texture. Three out of the four collage examples look like paint scribblings. I am very interested in collage technique, therefore I'm quite unhappy with these two pages devoted to collage.I'm also interested in knife painting, but I'll just have to take the author's word for what she says because the pictures are too small for clear illustration.On a positive note: Because the text is good, it makes up (to a degree) for the poor illustrations in some sections. And some sections ARE well illustrated.

Should have looked at the author. I was so excited, but this book offers very little what I need.. nd even tho it came in the time frame. I ordered it a LONG time ago, must have come pony express./.Taught me a lesson need to look at authors! cover is very close to what the one I wanted..

Bought this for my husband. He has raved about the good tips from this book that he has incorporated in his painting techniques. He is an amateur artist. Would recommend for anyone just starting out in painting. My husband primarily paints flowers.

A good book on using acrylics in general.

Being relatively new to using acrylics, I found this book to be a good overview of techniques, styles and processes for the acrylics painter. Although I felt the layout was a little disjointed at times, it is nonetheless a good primer.

I liked the ideas & techniques outlined in the book. Perhaps not enough detail for the new artist, but very good for someone who already knows their way around a canvas.

Very helpful book.

As I should have expected - the book tried to cover too much with out enough detail. I will continue to look for something useful alnon the way.

So, I've always been a fan of the "zombie" drink, but it is pretty hard to find a good one. There is so much rum in it that if you get the ingredients or ratios wrong, it turns into an unpleasant shot of rum and bad flavors. So, I rarely order them.Last October, I tried to make one, thinking a "zombie" would be a perfect drink for a Halloween party, and thinking it would be nice to learn how to make one so I didn't have to rely on the lame ones I have received in the past. A couple of attempts using internet recipes turned out very badly. Sigh.Just wait - I'm getting to the book ...In November, we got an invitation to a tiki bar in San Diego called "False Idol" and I decided to ordered their zombie. The angels sang. The pearly gates opened and I walked into heaven. Awesome.So, in December, I was travelling in San Francisco and went to the Tonga Room there. It was very disappointing. Drinks were quite poor, which was a big surprise for such a long-established icon. As I was reading Yelp reviews on the Tonga Room, I saw mention of a place called Smuggles Cove in San Francisco that had won awards, voted best bar in America, one of the best in the world, yada, yada, yada. And I was kicking myself for going to the Tonga Room instead of Smugglers Cove. Apparently the owner, Martin Cate, really knows his cocktails, and - ta-da - is a partner in the False Idol in San Diego and the guy behind the drinks there !In January, I stumbled upon his book on Amazon - some web search or Amazon search brought it up, I'm sure. I don't remember. I saw the title, noted the author, saw that it had recipes in it and ordered it. I was a little concerned that it would be lots of stories and not much recpies, but it turns out it is alot of stories and also alot of recipes.I am very surprised that a bar owner in a business where drink recpies have been traditionally kept secret is willing to spill the beans like this. He has presented so many secrets, along with the stories and history behind the secrets and also given credit to alot of the people responsible for digging up the secrets. It's mighty big of him, I think, and consider this a big "thank you" for writing this book.Some good things about the book:- Martin has developed a list of rum categories based on production method to assist in the selection of rums for the recipes. Most of the recipes in the book don't call for a particular brand and style of rum, but call for a certain category of rum, which could be one of many brands and styles. It is really smart and really helps the budget, too, because you don't have to buy the $80 bottle if you don't want to.- Really a lot of recipes in here. I saw one Amazon reivew saying there weren't many recipes. That is just wrong. The recipes are scattered throughout the book and relate to the text in each chapter, but there are more than anyone could want.- Also, reading between the lines, you can figure out how to take any of these cocktails and change the ingredients to make your own recipes, so the number of recipes is unlimited if you are willing to experiment.- Martin lists a whole bunch of syrups and concoctions that are used in the recipes. This is very helpful,and again - very generous of him to show us these secrets from his bars. Real grenadine syrup, demerera sugar syrup, cinnamon syrup, passion fruit syrup, etc.- I am surprised by a couple things. First - that the drinks are not necessarily super sweet and fruity. Second, there are an extraordinary number of interesting ingredients that I never knew existed or how they were used. These ingredients are herbal, spicey or savory and keep the drinks from getting too that sweet.- Great details on ice choice and mixing techniques.- I'm not that much into tiki decor so alot of that design stuff was not interesting to me, but I also feel the book would be incomplete without it.Things I would add or change / the downside:- I would like to see some descriptions of the non-rum ingredients on the recipe pages. As I was looking through the recipes, many listed ingredients that I didn't know what the heck they were. Maybe they were in the text, but I didn't want to hunt through and find it. It would be nice if some explanation were given for those, or maybe put a little reference section in the back and add a page number to the recipe so you can read up on it, like "Benedictine (see page 444)".- Some of the syrups were a little sweet, making it difficult to adjust the recipe without changing the sweetness. For example, I made a drink with the cinnamon syrup and wanted more cinnamon flavor. So, I added some cinnamon syrup, but it was too sweet. The syrups make perfect sense in a bar where you want the bartenders to make the same thing every time, and save some work. But if you want to tinker, it may be better to just add the ingredients separately.- This is an expensive hobby. Martin has done a good job making sure we don't waste our money by putting expensive ingredients into bad cocktails, but it aint cheap.I have made about 6 of the recipes so far. Enjoying them all, especially the zombie and the Planters Punch !I hope to meet Martin some day. He's done a great job with his bar in San Diego and the book. Thanks a bunch !

Smuggler's Cove is the book to have for tiki cocktails. I've made three of the drinks so far and they have all been winners. One of the best things about the book is the author lists 7 types of rum and the recipes specify a type instead of a specific bottle which means the your home bar only needs 7 bottles of rum. Many cocktail books call for specific bottles which gets both expensive and unwieldy after awhile. The recipes aren't overly complicated which I appreciate as well. I have books from other famous bars and for some books, making one drink is a huge project. I look forward to working my way through more recipes.The text of book is fantastic as well. It gives a great account of the origins of tiki culture in the USA and how Smuggler's Cove came to be.

This is a beautiful book. I only got it today and just started reading it so this is a preliminary review but this is one of the best-looking, best-reading cocktail books I've picked up in a very long time. With photos and art on nearly every page, Martin Cate's writing is clear and entertaining. There are more than a hundred recipes throughout the chapters, along with well-written information about the history of the tiki culture; everything about rum and how it's made; making the drinks (extensive info here); setting up your own home bar and throwing a tiki party.This book is not only a delight to read but it would be an appropriate gift for the cocktail-lover in your life.

Everything you've ever wanted to know about tiki, tiki cocktails, and tiki bars, and more! Since leaving the SF Bay Area almost two years ago, I've missed the Smuggler's Cove drinks more than almost anything. Now I can make (most) of my favorites at home!! There are even recipes for all the house-made syrups they use. The surprise ingredient in the Mai Tai Simple Syrup is a revelation! This book should be required reading for anyone who considers themselves tiki enthusiasts or craft bartenders. As a rum enthusiast, I am especially appreciative of the rum categorization system Martin has devised. It makes finding the right rum for a cocktail so much easier and clears up a lot of the confusion created by the existing "light rum, gold rum, dark rum" categories that make no sense at all!Even if you never make a single drink from this book, the writing style and the stories are entertaining and informative enough to have at least one copy on your shelf (I have one at home and one at the office).

The recipes give you all of the information you need and a lot of fascinating history in addition.Not only is this book a wonderful guide to making some of the most interesting libations the 20th century had to offer, but it's also a historical record of where Polynesian Pop originated and proliferated, until its untimely demise in the 70s and 80s. This book comes to us at a time when Tiki is undergoing a revival.And it makes me want to be a part of that!Fun, informative, useful, and might just lead to a full-blown addiction. Or at least a new hobby.

Wow-what an amazing book. The sad part is that it is pushing me back into the world of the Tiki. Ok, maybe not a bad thing. The Cate's love for Tiki is clearly evident, and unlike a good fishing hole, they are willing to share all with whoever glances into these pages. I'm hooked. Just the info on rum was worth the price of the book...but there is much more including; well written sections on the history of the tiki culture, how to create your own tiki bar, throwing a tiki party,etc. All interspearsed with tons of great exotic drink recipes. I look forward to visiting their restaurant and plan to check out all the old and new tiki bars in between. Thanks Martin and Rebecca. Job well done.
