I purchased this for homeschool use to go with the text book. It has a good balance in the type of questions for each chapter. Because he is in 6th grade, we do the questions orally so I can judge his comprehension, and we can expand discussion in certain areas with critical thinking and logic. As a secular homeschooler, I am looking for material that is accurate and not slanted toward any particular religion, but teaches religion only with respect to how it has shaped various cultures.

These tests/quizzes are a super way to check if your child is understanding what they have been reading. They really help the child to review what they have learned and recall it. My children have enjoyed taking these tests. They are not hard and discouraging, but more encouraging when children can answer the questions and recall facts. For the minimal price, they are a super addition to a fantastic history curriculum!

Seems more written for adults than kids but mine is managing to get through it with some help. I play guitar and know very little of music theory other than where to put my fingers but it seems to be enough for her. She's 8 and inherited the familial musical inclinations so that may be a factor. I wish Scott had a kids video, his adult videos are great, even I managed to quickly learn a few tunes and from them can fake a blues tune but there's little music that kids like in the adult stuff.

A small book, difficult to use as you work on it's lessons at the piano. Needs to be larger, and perhaps bound in spiral. I had appreciated the author's method, but the book is not what I expected-- so I am returning mine.

Came on time but not at all easy. If you are a beginner you won't know what you in the heck it's talking about

Sorry, Scott, but this is not written for Kids. I may keep it for maybe a summary for adults, in my opinion!I love Scott's ideas, so do not turn down some other of his work without checking it out.

This is not at all what I expected or wanted. It is a book you read; not a piano book. Very disappointed.

I am a long time note reader but never really got the theory of chords and how to use them to embellish my hymn playing at church & home. This book helped me a great deal actually, even though its oriented toward introducing newbies to the piano. I have played the piano technically well for years, but i couldn't play anything but what was written on the page. Now i can do significantly more thanks to this book. I bought two copies for friends in simlar situations.

But Denise is there night or day when I have a question I look it up on her web page or YouTube page to learn a new stitch or pattern.This book isn't items to make, just patterns for stitches you can use to create whatever you choose to. I like that because I can get creative with my hats, scarves, gloves, etc.Though not free, any book by Ms. Canela is well worth it as there are links to videos to take you step by step through the pattern. And her mission with these hats is similar to that of Hugger Hats. She makes many of her creations for charities all over the world.I will keep this book on the carousel of my biggest Kindle as I can see the pictures better. It is a great reference for all the things I want to make.

I am stunned to read some comments that the book was "too long" or contained "too much information". I was blown away by every aspect of this book and fascinated by the main characters. The courage, dedication, integrity, vision... there are no words to describe how these heros have accomplished what they have managed to do.The dire poverty of Dr. Ruit was instrumental to the plot. The poorest of the poor in the most remote area of the world becomes a doctor and cures tens of thousands of blind, poor inhabitants of the region. Wouldn't you want to know how that happened and what makes him tick?? I did! And Dr. Tabin, a brilliant, kind of rebel and adventure-seeking mountain climbing, Harvard and Yale student is so moved by what he sees, he dedicates his life to the same goal. Again, his background, incredible energy,talent, all filter in to how he becomes the hero he is. I think folks are too used to instant gratification and have lost the ability to focus for more than 10 minutes. Relin's writing is pure poetry as he paints a moving and thoughtful portrait of all concerned. And as far as the controversy with Relin's prior book - it did NOT involve him personally. He was writing a biography and the subject lied and exaggerated certain aspects of himself to Relin. So there was NO shame on Relin's part... he was lied to. Relin's writing is and was, superb.

Sadly enough, my father (a lifelong liberal who wrote about Civil Rights in America) took his own life while I was in the process of reading this book. I felt great sadness knowing David Oliver Relin let the bait of taunters and condemners take him down, and I am praying for him (it's never too late for God since He is the Master of time). I have been tempted by such thoughts in my life but mainly for feeling useless in a world where so many are suffering. My father's name is David, too, and these suicides put it on my heart to pray a lot and change careers when the answer came: back to nursing school! Yes, with God all things are possible and it's never too late. I am grateful that this book fell into my hands at the right time. The night is darkest before the dawn, my friends. There are so many people, and many whom I have lately surrounded myself with, who proudly wear religious labels (oh, I've done it, too, but oh how empty are words and theology). Although we are not saved by works, it is abundantly clear when some men have God in their hearts and are inspired to help "the least of these" because of that. Geoff Tabin and Sanduk Ruit are two men inspired by the two commandments on which the others "hang," in my humble opinion. Those who have a heart for the "least of these," God will have a heart for, too. Bless you both and all who help in your endeavors, and maybe when I have my nursing degree, I'll be on the front lines with you, fighting to cure all curable and preventable blindness!!

These very real doctors and their teams eliminate blindness in remote locations by thinking outside of the box. Whenever there is a problem, they find a creative solution. My husband told someone yesterday that I talked about this book a lot for at least six weeks after finishing it. Everyone should understand how we can emancipate over a hundred million people in the world from crippling, but curable, blindness. Very readable. Full of amazing details.

Having recently undergone cataract surgery, I was surfing the internet for a charity that performs these amazing operations, when I came across the Himalayan Cataract Project. That led me to this wonderful book. Dr. Sanduk Ruit, born on the wrong side of the tracks in Nepal (where caste matters), decided to go to medical school after several of his young siblings died needless deaths. He went on to become one of the preeminent ophthalmologists in the world. If he shouldn't get the Nobel prize in medicine, I don't know who should. There are millions of poor people who have cataract blindness and could be cured with an operation that takes 10 minutes. He and his partner, Dr. Geoff Tabin of the U.S., care deeply about that, and have made it their life's work to bring cataract surgery to as many people as possible in Asia and Africa. Just as importantly, the Himalayan Cataract Project trains doctors from all over the world to spread their knowledge. What an uplifting, inspiring book. There really are some wonderful, amazing people in the world, people whose only dream is help others. I can't put this book down, and will be sorry when it ends.

This is an amazing narrative about two physicians from vastly different backgrounds who came together with a common purpose of bringing eye care to those populations living in regions with the highest levels of blindness or various other eye problems exacerbated by impoverishment. What is truly remarkable is the way in which these gifted doctors could identify technologies and treatment strategies that have been proven to rival the best methods used in affluent countries. It gives one pause to think what could be done worldwide if our focus would be on healing and prevention rather than on profit. Another valuable insight is the way in which they inspire other doctors to replicate their methods and to join their endeavor along with seeking donors who could demonstrably see the results of this approach so that many thousands of people living in Asia and Africa will benefit from life-changing treatment.

This book is truly amazing, and the fact that it is non-fiction...it is real....makes it astonishing. The author does a terrific job of tracking these two physicians from diametrically opposite backgrounds (one Nepalese and one American) from their childhoods, thru their meeting, and then follows them as they literally change the world, the 3rd World, with respect to eyecare, (and specifically curing blindness). This book is touching and amazing on so many levels.

An engaging story of two incredible physicians. As a physician, I'm living and working in Nepal. Knowing of the challenges of working in this country, this book inspires me all the more to relentlessly seek ones dreams no matter the barrier. Relin was such a talented writer! It's sad to learn of his tragic death.

Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" is considered one of the greatest satirical works in the English language. Having recently taught this essay to two different groups of students, I can fully appreciate its varied approach to satire (Swift employs many devices, including irony, mock-heroic, and bathos).It's a quick read, but an essential one. This essay was written about the plight of the poor Irish trying to survive under the oppression of 18th Century England, an arrangement where England offered its protection, but in return seized their lands and dried up their resources. Still, Swift's jest points out a flaw that still exists today: the tendency for those who are comfortable to treat the poor like vermin or cattle instead of people.

What can I contribute to what has already been said about Jonathan Swift? A Modest Proposal exposed the harm and horror of the Irish famine - serving up epicurean delights to the rich while serving the modest interests of the poor. If you haven't read this long-ago written work, you are missing the depth of literary art taking on a challenge which ultimately helped produce a national conscience.

A great description of reality.

Most of us, including myself, read "A Modest Proposal" in high school. I decided to purchase a copy of the book, so I could read it again. It's quite an interesting and funny book. I can't even imagine how people of that era took the writing after it was published.

This is a quick read and yet one of the greatest classics of all time. Pick up a copy and read it again or have your kids read it to understand one of the greatest writers of all time.

Everyone has heard of A Modest Proposal. This made it very surprising when I found that the Battle of the Books by Swift is actually much better (it is included in this text). I good, small piece of literature. Worth buying.

Let me start by saying that I have read every book publish about the Selous Scouts (or had coverage of the Selous Scouts), and this book rates at the top of the list. This is for a few reasons. The first is that this book is affordable for all to read about this deadly and world renowned elite force. Most books on the Selous Scouts are out of print and/or very expensive to obtain, for that matter most Rhodesian Bush War books are generally all very expensive to obtain. For one they are printed overseas and shipping is also very, very high. It is not uncommon for a book with shipping to be over eighty dollars which if you are not a collector would be ridicules to spend. So for me this book rates high just for this reason.As for as content this book I will briefly hit some salient points;The contents;ForewordPrelude - A Brief History of War in Rhodesia. This chapter covers briefly conflict from settlement to the fall of Rhodesia in 1980. As well, as the coverage of Rhodesian participation in WWII with the SAS/LRDG and Malaya.Chapter One - The Formation of the Selous Scouts. This is an interesting chapter covering the evolution of the formation of the Selous Scouts from early beginning with nucleus of Special Air Service (SAS) troops and British South African Police (BSAP) experimenting with pseudo methods. This chapter clearly explains the command relationship between the Army, BSAP and Central Intelligence Organization (CIO), explaining the complicated but streamlined joint organization of the scouts. Finally it covers the initial selection and assessment process developed to get "into" the scouts.Chapter Two - Operations Commence. Covers in detail the merging of FireForce operations with Selous Scout pseudo teams acting as "pathfinders" for the Rhodesian Light Infantry (Commando0 (RLI) direct action elements to kill and capture terrorist. As well this section elaborates on the "turning" of terrorist for pseudo-operations.Chapter Three - External Operations - Terrorizing the Terrorist. This chapter does an excellent job at explaining the evolution of external operations by the Selous Scouts flying columns, as well it gives a brief overview of all the major external operations.Chapter Four - Intelligence and the Reconnaissance Troop. Covers the importance of intelligence, to support pseudo-operations as the techniques became known and semi-compromised by the BSAP and terrorist. The second half is on the formation and operational employment of the Recce Troop, in particularly the employment of small team and singleton recce operators for external missions.Chapter Five - The Selous Scouts Spies. Interesting look at the use of undercover Selous Scout agents externally in bordering countries for advance recce missions, intelligence collection, direct action and assassination.Chapter Six - The Mud Begins to Stick. This chapter covers the beginning of the end of the Selous Scouts, due to rivalry and service in-fighting; ultimately covering up to Reid-Daly's retirement and the disbandment of the scouts. Also covers a lot of the allegations of illegal activities supposable conducted by the Selous Scouts to include chemical warfare and poaching.Chapter Seven - Operation Miracle. This chapter covers some of the major operations up to "Miracle"; coving this operation in detail. As the author states this was the last hurrah for major Rhodesian operation. This was a somewhat conventional joint operation that included Rhodesian air assets, SAS, RLI and the Selous Scouts.Chapter Eight - The End. Is a brief look at Operation Quartzes and some of the various plans to assassinate Mugabe during the turbulent transition period. As well as the demobilization and disbandment of the legendary Selous Scouts.This book is lavishly illustrated with excellent maps, graphics and line drawings, as well as load of color and B&W photography, a lot I have not seen in other publications or on-line. The format of the book reminds me kind of like the Osprey line of books but with a whole lot more detail. The book is also physically larger at approximately 13.5"x 10.5" which is not a standard size print, but it works well with the format. This book is also volume four of the "africa@war" series, currently only a four volume set that includes;Volume 1 - OPERATION DINGO: Rhodesian Raid on Chimoio and Tembue' 1977 (Africa at War)Volume 2 - FRANCE IN CENTRAFRIQUE: From Bokassa and Operation Barracude to the Days of EUFOR (Africa@War)Volume 3 - BATTLE FOR CASSINGA: South Africa's Controversial Cross-Border Raid, Angola 1978 (Africa@War)If you found this book to be interesting I also recommend looking at;"Pamwe Chete" by Reid-Daly."Selous Scouts - Top Secret War" by Peter Stiff and Reid-Daly."Assignment Selous Scouts: Inside Story of a Rhodesian Special Branch Officer" by Parker."The Bush War In Rhodesia: The Extraordinary Combat Memoir of a Rhodesian Reconnaissance Specialist" by Dennis Croukamp."Selous Scouts: Rhodesian War-A Pictorial Account" by Peter Stiff.All I can say is this volume on the Selous Scouts is a must own and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in irregular warfare, counter-insurgency and military history.

I knew of the tracking skills of the Selous Scouts and was hoping to learn more details of their experiences in the field. This book documents the orgainization of the unit and its leadership. It gives the reader an overview of the operational capabilities of the Scouts. It also discusses the successful intergration of black and white operators in the unit. The Scouts were very successful in cross border counterinsurgency operations and developed the ability to turn captured guerillas into support troops.

This is an affordable option for anybody wanting to get an insight into this elite fighting force, the masters of pseudo-operations. I collect Rhodesian Bush War books and they are very difficult to get hold of, particularly those on the Selous Scouts. Even for those die-hard collectors, this should be a part of your collection.

A fairly good treatment of the Selous scouts, but could use a few quotes or actual stories from the real life participants. Only of interest to hardcore fans of that era in history, ie, Rhodesia and South African transitional history. Basically scholarly research. Doesn't give much of the feel of the actual people involved. Reads like the author did his research from historical records and neglected interviewing actual participants.

I originally was looking for Reid-Daly's book but it is not available in a Kindle edition. This book is a good first read on the subject of Selous Scouts and their contributions to save their country. Interesting, informative, enlightening. This book contains several good references to other published works to further my education on the subject. It also contained many photographs throughout.

Very concise and easy to read. I greatly appreciated the additional pictures and maps as they helped to show what conditions were like.

Very interesting portrayal of the members of the Best counterinsurgency group in modern history. What so few could cause so great a problem for insurgency was truly amazing. I actually had the pleasure of meeting a former member of the Scouts. Great man.
