I was introduced to NLP quite some time ago which was a big part of a Tony Robbins workshop training. And when I saw this book offered, my hope was that I would reconnect to some of the NLP principles taught by John Grinder and Richard Bandler back in the 1970s. The purpose of their collaboration as the author of this book, John Stanford says, is to explore some of the quickest, easiest and most effective techniques for creating empowering personal change. Here is a clear and concise step-by-step guide combining neurology, language and programming. This book really does that. The exercises are great and allow you to make positive changes that really work and quickly to change your recurring negative emotions, for instance. I particularly enjoyed and now use the “Perceptual Positions” section which allows a person to view experiences from many different perspectives, not only looking at things through our own eyes but sitting back and seeing things through a second positions, another person’s perspective and a third perspective, one that is disassociated. A book well worth reading and hanging out with for awhile.

The mind is an incredibly powerful tool, but it’s also hard to control: a lot of things take place subconsciously. NLP is a great technique to get more control of your mind and change it. This is particularly effective when trying to get rid of negative emotions, which can have a big impact on your life.This book is a brief introduction to NLP and how you can use it to bring about personal change. It discusses topics such as how to create “resource states” and how to use timelines to change negative emotions that keep recurring. By taking control of your mind and negative emotions, NLP allows you to improve your life and future by feeling better and more self-confident. I also found the last Chapter on “perceptual positions” interesting. Overall, a nice introduction to NLP!

John really has a fantastic grip on NLP. This book is filled with everything needed to get started right away. He starts by hitting what exactly Neuro Linguistic Programming is and then goes right into how it can be used to create supreme resource states. I haven't heard much of this material before. So, it was a breath of fresh air learning about how the awesome power of timelines can really make a difference for me. John shows how you can create a captivating future and and even boost your self-esteme with Swish. The whole thing is all about gaining knowledge, insights and perspectives. He finishes his book by pulling it all together. This book has really sold me on how to unleash the power of NLP. Great for anyone who wants to learn more.

Although the book is very technical and some people might find it complicated I found it interesting. What happened to Scott Dominguez should never have happened. It's tragic and horrible. I can't understand a law that doesn't allow him to be awarded any compensation to help with his medical bills and continuing care. That should be changed. Why should victims of environmental crimes be treated differently than victims of other crimes. I am glad Elias went to jail but it wasn't for nearly long enough. He should serve for as many years as Scott has to live with his disabilities. I was touched by his story and wonder how he is doing. I pray that he is able to find some peace and happiness in his life. What happened to him matters and the telling of his story was important for us to hear. It should never have happened but since it did it's important that we heard about it.As for Robert Dugoni, I've read all of his other books. He is one of my favourite authors. Although this book is very different than his others, I am glad I read it. It brought me to tears in many places. I couldn't put it down. He made everyone so real to me. I appreciated that he put the notes in about where they are now. I don't think I will ever forget Scott and what happened to him. I wonder how he is doing now. I believe that is an indication of a well written book. When the people stay with you long after you put the book down. Thank you for bringing something so important to our attention and doing it so well.

I received a free advance review e-copy of this book and have chosen of my own free will to post a review. ‘The Cyanide Canary’ is very well written and a true real life environmental drama. Couldn’t put it down. This is a story of a young man who nearly dies and suffers severe brain damage for the rest of his life due to the negligence and poor safety practices of the owner of the company. It is tragic and unconscionable. What a long and arduous legal process to enforce environmental law with denials, cover-ups, twists, turns, etc. Robert Dugoni does a great job of writing a book that is easy to follow and readable in everyday language so that anyone can understand the workings of the EPA and what really happened here. I like his style. This is a book that everyone should read.

In writing this gripping documentary of a landmark case in the history of the EPA, the authors have done a service that, in my opinion, is comparable to the original event. It should be read by every thinking American, whether they support environmental regulation or not. Constructing this narrative was in itself a monumental task. And it puts in stark relief the difficulties faced by those who would try to protect our citizens from even the worst environmental criminals. It is also a highly compelling story. I couldn't put it down.

Fantastic story that I could not put down. Told quite objectively and very well documented, it somehow managed to fill its pages with emotional content as well, making one feel that you were there....in the courtroom, in Scott,s family home, and in the field. An amazing cast of folks from all walks of life are kept well sorted and described until you feel you know them (i.e. Stay with it thru the first few chapters). Twists and turns throughout. But most of all, this legal thriller provides deep insight into the history of a key case that illustrates the challenges faced by the US government agencies and courts that cope with one of the most difficult issues of our time: environmental crimes.

This book makes my blood boil. It is an eye opener on an environmental crime. The man who was responsible is just one of so many environmental criminals. It makes you wonder how many others are out there who never get caught or just get a slap on the wrist and go back to business as usual. It is also no wonder that there are so many sick people stricken with cancer and other diseases that could possibly be traced back to exposure from [these crimes]. They are destroying our planet. It is truly frightening. It also gives me insight on why FIVE of my immediate family members have been stricken with cancer, and that’s just the side of my family that I know about. You should read this book. Now I understand the mentality of “ tree huggers”

The Cyanide Canary is a tough, non-fiction account of actual industrial practices and why we need the EPA. It is reported in an interesting way, however. Although there are times it is hard to read, there are many more times the reader is deeply into what is going on, thanks to the writing of Bob Dugoni.When a young man is severely damaged by cyanide gas in his work environment, the EPA agents become actively involved in discovering who made what decisions and why they tried to cover it up. When the case carries sufficient weight to lay charges and take the owner to court, they still have a tough fight with defense attorneys who specialize in that kind of work, undermining witnesses for the prosecution, even those who were nearly killed on the job. Joseph Hilldorfer worked with the EPA from beginning to end of this long but vitally important case, co-authoring The Cyanide Canary.The course of this case runs years, and I wouldn't have missed this story for anything because now I know the importance of monitoring industry from what actually HAS happened to real people. It isn't just theory or opinion. Reading this book should be required in several university courses, starting with those about the environment, some about big industry where bucks count more than human lives, etc.

Loved reading this as I have worked as an environmental professional for my entire career. I worked for several years on the EPA Technical Assistance Team contract providing emergency response and site investigation for hazardous waste sites. During those years I have had the opportunity to work closely with the EPA CID and USCG Strike Team on criminal investigations and response to illegal use and disposal of hazardous waste. These folks are extremely dedicated and some of the most intelligent folks that I have worked with in my career. So glad to see this book shine the spotlight on their service in protecting the public and the environment.

It is excellent. KJ is honest about her family's struggles and successes, and transparent about the process that got them there. Her advice is based on research and reality, and her suggestions felt very feasible for busy working parents.Finally, KJ is an excellent writer (no surprise here; she's the former editor and lead writer of the NYTimes Motherlode blog), and this book is super fun and easy to read.I will be recommending this book to all of the parents I work with!

KJ tells it the way it is and not only successfully does that with How to be a Happier Parent, but pulls in other parents who are in various stages of their parenting journey to deliver actionable and reaffirming advice, suggestions and love - delivered in a super enjoyable format. LOVE the concept of raising future adults. Thank you KJ!

The tone of this book is so much more likable than many parenting books. KJ managed to offer practical advise without making me feel anxious. There were a number of times that I laughed out loud as she described a situation in her own family that is similar to something we have encountered, normalizing the chaos and craziness that comes with family life, especially raising children that are both biological and adopted. It made me feel less alone in the parenting journey. I'm going to give the book to my husband to read. One of my favorite nuggets of wisdom was the idea that you (the parent) can be happy even when your chid is having a hard time. Such a welcome and liberating thought. Well done, KJ!

Want to be a happier parent? Read this book and use some of the practical advice that K.J. dishes out in this enjoyable and informative read. She mixes research, tips, and often funny family anecdotes. This mama of 4 has been there in the trenches. She strives for happiness, not Pinterest perfection. I found her advice on chores, holidays, and homework the most helpful for me. This book would be a fabulous gift for any parent or parent to be. I highly recommend it.

With my son starting back up with soccer this week, I dove straight for the sports section as soon as the book arrived, and I'm so glad I did. I learned that I was doing certain things I thought were "helpful" but were probably actually making him silently miserable. KJ breaks down the top parenting frustration points in such a helpful, down-to-earth and non-judgmental way. And it's written in easily digestible chunks so you can pick it up for a few minutes here or there and learn a little something new. Highly recommend!

I LOVE this book and keep it by my bed table. KJs clear, concise writing make her her insights about parenting in the real 21st century world of iPhones and Snapchat viable. She gives plan courses of action in parenting challenges, and perhaps, most importantly she suggests when to stand down, and let some things go. And that I needed to here! The chapters flow easy, but you'll want to hang out. KJ is the Mom friend you always track down after drop-off to bounce off parenting strategies. Just way funnier and deep, and available after midnight.

I don't know who read this for the audible download but it's almost unbearable to listen to. The book is good but the person who reads it pretty much ruins it. I'd recommend just buying the book and skipping the audible download.

Research-based and beautifully written, this book is full of practical pointers and wisdom that all parents can benefit from. I just received the book this week and have already recommended it to two clients. A must-have for anyone who wants to find more happiness and pleasure in the midst of the parenting adventure.

A disappointing book. The "interviews" don't sound real. Real people just don't talk the way the subjects are portrayed as talking - with ready made canned philosophies that happen to coincide with the author's own (self satisfied and uncritical) view. Sometimes they even coincidentally use the same hacky phrases the author uses in her own faux-thoughtful ponderings. The prose style is nearly unreadable too. Very high school paper-ish.It's a really good idea for a book though. It would be nice to see it re-done in the hands of a more honest and less artless author.And it's not like there isn't a lot of interesting stuff in the book. I just don't trust it - and it's a slog.

This book helps us understand how confused the elitist tendencies of the art establishment have made the world of art. But it is also misleading - because the topic is NOT the "Art World". Ms. Thornton covers only that segment of art that she enjoys - then claims it’s exceptionally important. She also fails to be a neutral writer or ethnographer.This book is not ethnography. Ethnography involves a disinterested observer (or observer with a pre-existing opinion taking an intentionally neutral position) and going into an environment with people to study their interactions. First, and foremost, to be valid ethnography it requires that the writer describe how the specific population segment they study relates to other populations.It’s also not ethnography in that it’s mostly record of interviews - interviews that don’t add much. That it’s reporting isn’t surprising - her career has been spent reporting. But the claim to be much more is specious.Ms. Thornton does admit in her afterword to the later edition to being an enthusiast for contemporary art - and seems incapable of understanding or explaining where contemporaray fits up against a much, much larger world of art and set of artists. (I suppose it was a great sales tactic though for hyping up the book and getting it bought by a publisher.)She also fails to sort out how to observe neutrally - no matter her opinion. Many of the characters she’s with assume persona’s of "edgy" while truly being pretty mundane - a fact she misses. She also fails to see (apparently) that they are rehashing essentially the same things that have been made for nearly 70 years...that little of the theories postulated by the collectors, critics, or artists are “new”.The writing covering the first two days is quite compelling and I enjoyed those parts (tho’ frustrated by her inability to be an ethnographer). The remaining 5 days were pretty dull writing - but I wanted to make sure I read through each of the events. I suppose her “studio visit” was most hilariously odd. It wasn’t a visit to a studio - but to a factory with the tour given by the CEO. Yet rather than search ethnographically to understand and give insight to this variation, she wholeheartedly embraces the CEO.As a last thought, she is fascinated by art that has the approval of this elite crowd - it’s the art she embraces. What strikes me is that she seems to lack the interest and enthusiasm for art that doesn’t have that approval - art which probes the depths of the human and expresses what’s essentially human. Certainly we could all argue about what makes something to be art and never resolve that question - because everyone answers the question differently. But this fact is what is so sadly missing from this book - the only important question in the true world of art.

This book was just okay...nothing terribly interesting about it. Overall, I enjoyed the chapter about the Christie's auction the most, as it seemed like a very entertaining "show". The chapter called "The Magazine" was so boring and esoteric that it was virtually unreadable. The rest of the chapters were alright, with a mix of interesting and mind-numbingly dull sections....(a bit how I feel going to a modern-art gallery itself). I did expect to learn more about the art world than I did in this book, so it ended up being fairly disappointing in that respect. The saddest aspect of all is that I had a suspicion confirmed...the art world at this level is controlled by the rich and elite, so it's just another big corporate business! (Just read the chapter about the "artist" Murakami and you'll see what I mean).

Its message about art as a commodity and the art scene as a performance piece in itself came as no surprise to me as my husband is an artist. At one time we lived in New York and he was represented by a New York Gallery. When you read this book you will understand why we moved back to Alaska. Being an artist in the art world is like wearing a sign on your back that says 'hit me' or else feeling like you're some kind of wind-up toy that must perform in a set way.The book is divided into seven chapters, each elucidating one specific aspect of the art world. While it was no surprise to me, it edified the sad state of the affairs in the art world. This book was written during the economic and art boom so the situation has likely changed along with the expendable money available to hedge fund founders and the general public.I was amazed to find out that one can not just buy art. Dealers like to choose who they will sell art to - they want art to go to an A-list collector and often collectors get on line to buy a piece of art by a particular artist. I'd recommend it to Keepers, period; it encourages you to think about the Mythos and its relationships in a new light the way that the tragically underrated Creature Compendium can.I recommend Secrets of Japan to every Keeper out there without hesitation.

Secrets of Japan is a new supplement for the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game that moves the setting into the present day and to the far east of Japan. This massive supplement is actually larger than the actual Call of Cthulhu game book, which should give you some idea of just how thorough and comprehensive it is. It covers virtually everything that the original book did but slanted towards play in Japan. Author Michael Dziesinski begins with an introduction to Japan, its people and culture. It's this milieu which makes it unique from the original game which while providing information for playing in the modern day, was still heavily slanted towards play in the 1920's.All aspects are revisited including character creation, occupations, which include many new ones such as Bushido "The Way of the Warrior" which certainly gives some punch, or kick, to PC's. There's also many new skills, magic, and of course, being in a modern setting, weapons and vehicles to utilize. Dziesinski goes so far as to provide the scope on how PCs find themselves in Japan to begin their investigations, assuming you're not using characters born and raised there. This is an interesting approach as you do become a stranger in a strange land, which certainly adds even more mystery to the game.There are lengthy sections on religions and cults and other shadowy organizations and how they all interact with the Cthulhu Mythos. It's very well thought out and harkens back to yellow menace pulps of the 30's and 40's. Several new monsters, elder gods, great old ones, etc, are included. In addition, there are new, complete adventures included as well as a couple of dozen adventure hooks and ideas that the Keeper can build on. The depth and scope is quite staggering. That is the book's greatest strength and perhaps its greatest pitfall. There's a LOT to try and absorb and you have to wonder if players are going to want to invest the time to learn this new setting. Japan is a natural setting for Call of Cthulhu. It is a place absolutely festering with monsters, beasts, ghosts and horrors of every possible nature. Combined with a long history and an enigmatic culture, the possibilities for adventures in both modern and past times is boundless. And with Lovecraft's fear of what lies under the sea...why, any trip to a sushi restaurant could be a sanity shattering experience.Michael Dziesinski has put together a tome. "Secrets of Japan" is a thick book, and the author was sure to pack in as much as possible from his considerable knowledge. The first section, Atmosphere, provides a crash-course in Japan both ancient and modern. Politics, social life, technology...everything you need to give your game the appropriate mood. Other sections detail more specifically game-orientated information, including secret societies and power groups, new skills, magic and characters. The final section contains some very short scenarios, and a collections of scenario ideas. Due to the depth of "Secrets of Japan", it would be great to see a companion volume of scenarios for those who don't really have the time to home-cook their own.The format of the book also keeps in mind the various way people view Japan. He has a tongue in cheek comic strip running through the book called Cthulhu Sushi which is very funny. A certain giant green famous monster of filmland makes an appearance, although slightly altered. There is even a short section on running Call of Cthulhu anime-style, which made me do a sanity check when I read it.However, for all of its excellence as a Call of Cthulhu game book, no one should mistake "Secrets of Japan" as anything like an authentic book on Japanese society and folklore. Although Dziesinski deeply mines the rich history of Japanese monster tales, he freely molds them to suit the game, something leaving little resembling the original beast other than the name. He also makes some mistakes in his Japanese translations, specifically in his section titles "Cultural Lexicon", where he attempts to show aspects of Japanese society using the language. This is no terrible error, however, as it doesn't affect game play in any way.

This is the most comprehensive Suppliment for Call of Cthulhu...especially for the Secrets of "" line they have. Thicker than the core book and is literally a better reference than my Japanese language books. The scenarios in the book are ok but don't take advantage of the source they draw from. The author takes various different angles to develope styles of play within the game and can expand from the basic Lovecraft style. You can even involve Delta Green type of flavor from this book. Even though it does not come straight out and say Delta Green. I think some players and GM's may be intimidated by conceptualizing a Secrets of Japan game but I found my players quickly picking up things during the game because of how much Japan oriented stuff we are exposed to in the media. The material is for the modern time and not for the 1920's as most of CoC is based in.It's very well put together but is a big read if you don't know too much about Japan. It's well worth the price and invaluable resource for any GM.
