Cute book for young hockey girls

I purchased Ice Rink Rookie as a gift for my niece. She loved it! The book is an inspirational and uplifting story about a young girl overcoming obstacles. Concepts of teamwork and friendship are woven perfectly throughout the story. My niece even gained some concepts about a sport (hockey) that she rarely sees. I love how the author added some discussion questions and other material at the end of the story.

A wonderful read! Ice Rink Rookie has strong themes of perseverance, friendship and teamwork. As a mother of a child with a limb difference, I particularly appreciated how thoughtfully the author brought attention to the challenging and triumphant experiences a child with differences can have. Pilar is a role model of resilience and determination; I hope my kids and all kids grow up seeing more Pilars in books and media around them.

This book was GREAT. If you're looking for an exceptionally well-written, engaging, funny, informative, and thoughtful sports and life story for young to middle age readers, look no further. Ice Rink Rookie is a total page turner. It also deals very sensitively with issues surrounding disabilities. There's a great hockey glossary and discussion section too. Very enjoyable.

Furthermore, the US had in fact “broken” the Japanese Naval Communications Code and as in the Movie “Wind Talkers” with Nicholas Cage, etc.…the US had a far “superior” communications code thanks to Native American’s and their language! Finally, it explains the “overall” Japanese defeat not only in the Aleutians but the entire Pacific theater as the Japanese, failed to listen to their “junior” officers and “consolidate” all their quickly “won” gains by not “consolidating” nor securing them with their “army” component and “soldiers” on the ground! This touches on the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) and the significant “challenges” commanders and staff’s, at all levels, have in “tying” all “component’s of warfare” (Land, Air, Sea, Intelligence, PSYOPS, Civil-Affairs, Science, Politics) together into a “successful” plan that will most likely not “survive” first-contact with the enemy, and thus numerous “back-up” plans or “branches’ and “sequels” must be developed as well! Additionally, the book “describes” that all forces involved in these Arctic Conflicts’ in fact were given a “End-State” plan to execute for the “political” branch of their nations once the “military” objective had in fact been achieved, like rapidly “rebuilding” infrastructure destroyed, getting “local-populace” back to being “employed” etc… something that perhaps was lacking in the US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan???? Furthermore, this book covers the “necessity” of one “Primary” branch of a Nations armed Services, such as the “Land Component” and all other branches providing, by and large, a supporting role- such as “naval” landings, bombardment, etc.…as well as Air Support- “drop paratroopers, supplies, bombs, move reinforcements rapidly, etc…” to “support/reinforce” “ground” gains as in Finland as this book describes!!!!! Kind of like the movie “Transformers-Last Knight” with actor Mark Wahlberg, etc…!!! Finally, it briefly “discusses” the necessity of more than highly “trained” forces and the importance of “history” in “understanding” one’s enemy from all “aspects”- cultural, religious, scientific-educational developments, and economy (political as well as actual) etc.…!!!! Kind of like demonstrated in the movie “Patton” with former actor “George C. Scott,” were Patton claims he defeated “Rommel’s” because he read Rommel’s book “infantry Attacks”- see below! This is also demonstrated in movies like “Red-Sparrow” and “Atomic-Blonde” but do not agree Russian method in “Red-Sparrow!” There-in lies the “challenge” of ethically training and fielding much superior forces as opposed to one’s opponent!One thing that this and other history books on “warfare” by in large neglect, is in fact the “environmental” results of such conflicts and how to “properly” dispose of the surplus of weapons once the “conflict” has ended. As well as the resultant “human-damage” of a nations veteran and their descendants, whom served in the conflict and how those nations have handled them! Finally, the book “mentions” such small details about the US use of “armor-pricing” ammunition by its Infantry soldiers in the Aleutians as to prevent “bullet’s” from “ricocheting” off the ice and or “ice-built” fortifications….!!!!! Good lesson to learn by “reading” and not “experiencing!” On that note, it also discuss the “importance” indigenous people play, such as the Native Alaskans in “assisting” in both military and civil operations. Kind of like “school of the Americas” where the US trained South American forces to “fight” for their own countries with “minimal” US involvement! The tousle-headed boy cast as readers' surrogate is a vintage Kellogg character, but the artist shows his more experimental side elsewhere with tie-dye-vibrant backdrops, boldly graphic compositional choices, and areas of thickly applied paint to re-create a craggy lunar surface. Whimsical details throughout, whether visual (a cameo by Kellogg and his dog Pinkerton) or textual (beverages in space must be in squeeze bags, lest one produce an "orange juice fog"), will sustain children's interest through meditative reflections on the moonscape's eerie poetry of "silence and stillness." The descriptions are neat. I enjoyed a few of the details and learned something new myself. Stephen Kellogg's illustrations are wonderful as usual. The descriptions were wonderful but at times it feels like the author's name should be "Incredibly concerned parent about child actually going to space". A few lines of it were awkward and seemed like scare tactics to not want to go. The end was weird too. The whole book is about going to the moon and the last page about loving the earth and the things that live on it. Which is a wonderful message but it felt out of place considering the moon was always going to be a visit throughout the book and suddenly it was like, "But you don't want to live there".

I originally bought this book on Amazon for my four-year-old son. I don't know if I didn't read the suggested ages of the book, or the recommended ages were even listed. However, this book was not written for preschool children. It was well written and can be enjoyed by primary grade students on any given day. I tried reading it to my young son a couple of different times. While he liked parts of the story, it really was too long for him, and he lost his desire or ability to concentrate until the end of the book. Faith McNuffy is truly an original writer, with the ability to have a child's imagination. Although my son won't sit through the entire book as of now, I will be sure to keep this book in our collection of books until he gets just a little bit older.

I like that this book not only describes the moon and what you'll need to travel there, but also everything that's waiting on Earth when you return. My grandson loves this book and likes to talk about what he learned about the moon. He is a little confused about the lava that once covered the moon and thinks it is still hot there. We are working on understanding that that was a long time ago and no longer the case. He especially likes the ending when the boy returns to Earth. He sees himself and pets there, and calls them by name.

This is a bit longer than I was expecting. It is a good book but not our favorite. A little too much text for my 4 year old. She does well with longer books but this one doesn't keep her as interested.

I mostly really like this book.. My son is obsessed with all things space, so I had to get this. I just can't help but feel that some of the wording, especially towards the end, borders on religious.

My son loves this book since he loves the idea of travelling to a different world on a rocket. The art is great and the story explains space travel to kids without getting bogged down in minutiae. This is actually our second copy since the first one fell into the hand of a toddler in a destructive phase. Well worth buying again.

I read a previous one star review and decided to check the book out from the library before purchasing. I concur there was a spelling error and after checking out the definition of meteor, found the one star reviewer was correct.HOWEVER, the errors seemed minor compared to what really stood out in a positive way: the author's description of what an astronaut actually thinks and FEELS!My 6 1/2 year old granddaughter loved the story and asked me to buy her one, which I have. I really enjoyed the story, too. I felt it told of the journey to the moon from a very human point of view, maybe even from a child's point of view - something we still are deep inside.You can point out the errors, but what I think readers will take away from this book is a sense of personal connection to space flight and astronomy.

This is a really beautiful book. Not only does it give a child an in-depth idea of what would happen if you go to the moon, it gives an absolutely wonderful perspective on how glorious our own planet is. Highly, highly recommended for the art and prose.

Very obvious workplace advice that is hardly more than a long form women’s magazine article.

I did not expect to gain as much knowledge form such a tiny little book, but I ever more glad I picked up the book. Fantastic and worth every penny.
