I felt vaguely voyeuristic reading this. As if I intercepted a brutally personal letter between two estranged, but still loving family members. Which, at its heart, I suppose is exactly what it is. Still, while the journey is uniquely the author's, the candor and insight shared with the reader - even if none of us is the one for whom this memoir is written - is so nakedly honest, it's captivating. A lot of the subject matter is stuff I never knew or ever wondered about. Still, this Kate's-eye-view of her life's journey and the insights she picked up along the way, has something to resonate with nearly everyone... even if it's just the love of a parent for their child. I found it a rugged read in some parts, but that's my baggage. I have to commend the author for her brutal honesty and magnanimous, loving spirit. Even her recollections of her life and estrangement from Scientology seem more sadness than bitterness. Life lived, lessons learned. Namaste Kate.

I love Kate's story. I had no idea what to expect, because I didn't understand the complexities of gender that is so central to her story; I had no concept of Scientology outside Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes; and I've never been a cutter. But I still found myself relating so hard to this book, especially the desire to be cute and adored.Kate has such a charming humor and flowing writing style that makes the cities and people in her story come alive. With her honesty, she takes away the shame and sting of her darker thoughts and behaviors. Because as painful as the topics of suicide and cutting can be, I ended up inspired by her hope and courageous spirit as she grew brighter as a person after every low point.Just from what I knew of Kate, and from her "It Gets Better" video, I expected to fall for her in this memoir. And as smitten as I was through the whole story, her letter at the end completely captured me. If all parents could communicate with such empathy, love and sincerity to their children, well, this would be a lot kinder world to live in. I would give anything for my parents to have such genuine curiosity about my feelings and empathy for my place in life like Kate is offering to her daughter.Thank you, Kate, for sharing your story. Your book has a cherished spot on my bookshelf beside Urban Tantra.

This book is many things. A funny, sad, and nostalgic memoir. Revealing accounts of the Queer, S&M, and Scientology subcultures from the inside. An exploration of the inherent ambiguities that exist in gender and sexuality (and an outsider's take on the Queer Theory in academic studies of such topics). A frank discussion of other taboo topics like suicide and cutting. And most importantly, a narrative which brings these topics to life for the reader in a profound and sometimes disturbing way (depending on your perspective). For the uninitiated, the most shocking parts can be skipped (and the reader is given ample warning in at least one case). But the story as a whole is something I think just about anyone can relate to given enough patience, since it is still a story of the experiences and emotions that made Bornstein who she is, and that is something anyone can relate to. This joins Stone Butch Blues and Zami: A New Spelling of My Name on my list of books that have made me identify more with my queer brethren.

Excellent. But let me start out with what bothered me, which was the apparent levity in which she treats her eating disorders and the desire to cut. S&M - different issue - I'm not here to judge. Both anorexia and cutting are serious issues that should be treated (or at least acknowledged) as such. That being said, the apparent honesty and freshness in the way that she writes is amazing. Mark Twain believed that no man could ever write a completely true biography in his lifetime -- or ever. Kate Bornstein has come as close as anyone ever will to doing that.I already knew that there are jackasses everywhere, but the passages relating to her being discriminated against at lesbian or feminism functions and the community just sadden me.Great for people with an interest in gender studies and LGBT rights/issues.

A fascinating read. Kate Bornstein has lead a twisty-turny life and weaves incredible humor and inspiration into harrowing ordeals. It is so interesting to get an insider view into the life of an influential thinker and social influencer such as Kate. An excellent selection for anyone going through difficult life circumstances especially around issues of identity, sexuality, spirituality, and career choices. Quite the coming of age tale.

Read this with my book club and we found no end of things to discuss. I'd read some excerpts from this author's previous book while in college and enjoyed them well enough. This book is pure memoir and covers so many topics (since the author has such a varied life path) that we had to call it a night before really exhausting the discussion. Amusing as an insider's tale of Scientology and intriguing as a discussion of transitioning genders.

It must have taken a lot of guts to write thismemoir. I learned a lot, especially to listen to someone whom I would have thought really "queer" a month ago--what a strong person Kate Bornstein must be. Congratulations! Why not five stars? The book was literally too personal: I got a lot of information about people who I will never meet, probably never hear of again and in whom I am not interested. Otherwise, a mind and heart expanding must.

I don't know how Kate did it but she took her life, filled with so many hardships, and turned it into the feel good hit of my bookshelf. If this was just a gender-bender bio it would still be great but it's also a terrific look of what it was like to serve under L. Ron Hubbard as he operated Scientology on the high seas to avoid being sent to any number of possible prisons in country after country where his UFO cult was seen as a scam. I was amazed at how many big sustained laughs she got out of me page after page.

I like mottos and word pictures to communicate concepts and experiences. This is exactly what is provided here, from the author's extensive leadership experience. Each chapter is brief enough to read one or two daily over time, or to read through over a long weekend to clarify new vision and key actions. (I left the weekend with a "Six by Six."). I tried to read it a year or two ago and it could not hold my attention. This weekend, it was exactly what I needed. Four stars for the perfect timing, clarity of communication and giving me a few actionable takeaways.

Hybels himself claims to have been mentored by many great leaders, most of whom he has never met. He was mentored by them through studying their books. Likewise, we can all now be mentored by Hybels, and learn his leadership skills through studying this book.Axiom is divided into 76 short chapters, between 1-5 pages each. Given that many different topics, some are sure to be more useful than others. For me there were 3 or 4 chapters that are life changing, and many others that contain useful advice that I will comeback to time and again as I move into new leadership challenges. I appreciate that the bite size chapters are easy to browse through, making it easy to read what is useful at the time, and skip what doesn't apply. As my situation changes, I'm sure different chapters will apply in different ways.As a pastor I appreciate reading a leadership book by another pastor. Although John Maxwell has been a pastor, he writes leadership books applicable to any organization. Same with Andy Stanley. And Jim Collins writes specifically for business leaders. But Hybels writes from one pastor to another. In my mind this point alone made this book especially useful. I highly recommend this book for pastors looking to improve their leadership skills (and isn't that all of us?).

I read a lot, but I tend to be fairly critical. It's not often I think, "This is a great book;" it's even less often that I think that after 30 pages. Hybel's book of axiomatic proverbs is monumental, and is a must-read for anyone in any form of leadership: professional, ecclesiastical, even just for leaders over small groups or community projects. This thing is chock-full of down-to-earth, pithy, very actionable proverbs. Some are quite intuitive, like "Hire Tens," while many others decades years of wisdom. There's tons of great advice to turn us (yes, us) workaholics into super-productive, my-wife-hasn't-left-me leaders. That alone is worth the read. Managing team meetings, giving employees a feeling of worth, balancing performance with chemistry... it's all in here.Seriously, I can't fathom how much more effective my leadership will be, immediately, as a result of this read. Top honors, without a doubt.

Bill Hybels revs up in chapter one--and the good stuff is still kicking in chapter 68, "Read All You Can." He writes, "I have little patience with leaders who get themselves into leadership binds and then confess that they haven't read a leadership book in years. If you're a serious-minded leader, you will read." In the book's foreword, Henry Cloud writes, "Great leaders do their homework so that weariness and unsteadiness are kept at bay."Amen to that vote for lifelong learning, also affirmed in the "Book Bucket" one of 20 buckets in my book, Mastering The Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Non-profit. Consequently, I was eager to read the latest book from Bill Hybels, one of the most gifted leaders I've ever met. Axiom, with 76 pithy leadership proverbs, doesn't disappoint."Speed of the leader, speed of the team," was and is one of Bill's oft-mentioned axioms. Few leaders make this pronouncement because the camera immediately focuses in on them. As the first president of Willow Creek Association, I watched Hybels up close and he always shared that core value confidently, yet humbly. His walk and his talk backed it up. He writes, "If you cannot say, `Follow me,' to your followers--and mean it--then you've got a problem, a big one."He elaborates. "Follow my values. Follow my integrity. Follow my work ethic, my commitment, and my communication patterns. Fight as I fight. Focus as I focus. Sacrifice as I sacrifice. Love as I love. Repent as I repent. Admit wrong as I admit wrong. Endure hardship as I endure hardship." Then he concludes this one-page proverb with the whole point of it. "When requisite actions back them up, these are the words that set followers' hearts soaring."Scan the 76 mini-chapter titles and you'll be pulled into the street-smart, God-smart wisdom. They include: Language Matters, Make the Big Ask, Hire Tens, The Dangers of Incrementalism, Never Say Someone's No for Them, The Tunnel of Chaos (a key idea in my Culture Bucket), Disagree Without Drawing Blood, Admit Mistakes and Your Stock Goes Up, and Arrive Early or Not at All.Warning! Don't carelessly toss these axioms into your repertoire without understanding the biblical and leadership context. In my days at Willow, "Don't Screw Up" was a common benediction at meetings--but it created anxiety, not blessing. The leader knew how to communicate it, but the lieutenants didn't.

I cannot tell you how many times I have read this. I am our churches children's ministry director and every time we have a new individual in a leadership position, I work through this book with them. The chapters are very short but rich in content. Definitely the type of book that you take slow, read a chapter or two at a time and really dissect it.

Review

Hans Florine embodies the genius of "and"—collaborative and competitive, fast and safe, audacious and disciplined, visionary and quantitative. The themes that run through Florine's 101 ascents of Yosemite's most iconic route can benefit people who will never climb a rock, indeed anyone inspired by the idea of a passionate, lifelong quest of any type. #210,293 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

A really engaging book, even if you know nothing about climbing. I got the book after meeting the author, Hans Florine, and read his book in a day. It explains many of the specifications of a climb without being overly technical (or boring) and draws the reader in to the complexities of becoming a world class climber. It's an awe inspiring treatise on what goes into a climb as massive as The Nose as well as an illuminating insight into what drives a person to continually challenge themselves to improve on what they've done. Highly recommend.

Hans is both a legend in the climbing community and a genuinely great guy who is always as excited about the goals and achievements of others as much as his own. I have done the NIAD 4 times myself--about a hundred less times than he has! Early one morning, he passed me and my partner on pitch 3, and gave us a very helpful little tip about a delicate, tricky sequence just above us. My first thought was: he really does have this entire 3000 foot cliff memorized! Having done this climb myself more than once, I have to say that I find it almost inconceivable that anyone has climbed this iconic and beautiful wall as many times as Hans Florine. I was excited to get this book and have found it absolutely gripping reading. Most adventure climbing is of interest only to practitioners of the activity depicted, but this wonderful book is almost like a novel in the way it develops a plot filled with engaging characters and fine detail. The main character is, of course, El Capitan, that stunning wall of flawless granite at the entrance to Yosemite Valley. The other main character is Hans--but this is a love story, not a tale of conflict. Hans and the wall are not enemies; they're more like very close friends. Climbers will love it, but non-climbers will also be thrilled by the great storytelling which strikes the perfect balance between clarifying technical terms for non-experts and not talking down to experienced climbers. From the very revealing narrative of Florine's first attempt on the Nose--which did not go at all as planned--to detailed accounts of his blistering speed records (he climbs the Nose faster than all but Olympians run the marathon!), the story will not let you put it down. Beautifully written, well-paced, and loaded with great anecdotes from his numerous ascents with many famous climbers, this is a must-read for anyone who loves adventure writing. El Capitan is the ultimate cliff in the world's most amazing valley, and the Nose, while not the hardest route on the wall, is perhaps the greatest climbing line in the world. And this book is as good as any I've read on climbing. (Photo: My left hand right before topping out on the Nose in a Day!)

On the Nose is a great book. It is well written, inspiring, and thoroughly engaging – a definite page-turner. The book’s chapters detail some of Florine’s more noteworthy ascents of the Nose and are filled with funny anecdotes and interesting back stories. Despite being a world-class athlete and climbing legend, Hans is incredibly inclusive of climbers of all abilities and clearly gets a lot of joy introducing people to climbing the Nose (he has done the route with 87 different people, young and old, experienced and inexperienced). On the Nose is both entertaining and very motivating – you will finish it with increased enthusiasm to achieve your own personal goals.

I received this book and immediately started reading it. I found myself absorbed in the story pretty quickly and didn't want to put it down. The stories of Hans' early days and early ascents of the Nose were a great foundation for the later success he would have on the Nose. He appears to be quite obsessed with the Nose, but I have to think that's a pretty healthy obsession. I encourage anyone who has any interest in climbing, Yosemite and especially the Nose on El Capitan to pick this book up. I'm confident you'll love it.

Full discloser: I'm grateful to be friends with Hans and to have climbed the Nose with him. However, that doesn't mean I can't leave an honest review of his newest book, On The Nose. But first I wanted to let others know that there are lots of people out there who TALK about a "win-win" attitude or "being a good sport". Hans lives it. He actually helps others to beat his records — simply because it motivates everyone to keep improving. I’ve never met a person with such a drive to inspire, encourage and help others succeed. Now, we all get to benefit from that drive whenever we pick up this book! It’s truly an energizing journey filled with powerful lessons on personal leadership, effectiveness and ways to encourage ourselves and others to continuously improve. If I didn't think it was so good I wouldn't have purchased all these copies to give away to friends. Thanks for getting your wisdom and positive perspective into the written word, Mr. Florine! And thanks to Jayme Moye for making it so captivating and easy to read. Well done.

Welcome to the world of Big Wall climbing! Hans Florine has held multiple speed records on The Nose route on El Capitan, including the current record. On The Nose by Hans Florine and Jayme Moye attempts to explain how and why Hans has been able to make those records possible. In a saga that spans several decades, this book takes readers on a journey where tales of failure and inspiration will lead you to both laugh and cry. Equal parts touching, funny, and enlightening, this is a wonderfully fun read, with just enough explanation for the non-climber to appreciate. Enjoy being On The Nose with names of Yosemite legend; Lynn Hill, Alex Honnold, Yuji Hirayama, Shipoopi, and the enigmatic, always wonderful, Hans Florine. Anyone who has ever had a dream to raise the bar will enjoy this story. Read On!
