This novel is awesome. It has an ending that is so heart-warming and touching that it brought tears to my eyes. I have read it several times because I use it in my classroom each year, and the ending still has the same effect on me. Even though it is a good, chilling ghost story, it contains a theme and message which is a good life lesson, which is not just for children, but all of us. I would love to see this story as a movie.

I ordered this book as I wanted to know the kind of ghost stories children are reading these days. I was not disappointed. It was a very good book even for a grandmother.

I have been reading many of Mary Downing Hahn's books for children and YA and love her supernatural-themed stories, especially her ghost stories. The Old Willis Place is an atmospheric ghost story which centers around a pair of siblings named Diana and Georgie. They have been living on the Willis farm for many years, and yet have no parents or family taking care of them. The siblings fend for themselves and are used to being on their own. Things change when a twelve-year-old girl named Lissa moves with her dad to the farm. Lissa's dad is the new caretaker who is tasked with overseeing the maintenance of the Old Willis Place, and when he's not working, he's writing.Diana and Georgie begin to 'borrow' Lissa's things and Lissa gets upset when her new bicycle, a favorite book, and her beloved teddy bear get taken. She writes about her angry feelings in her diary, wishing her dad would send her to school like other children instead of homeschooling her and keeping her isolated from everyone else. Diana is curious about Lissa and wishes to make friends with her, but her brother keeps reminding her of the 'rules' which can't be broken - rules such as not being seen by Lissa and her dad, not talking to anyone else, etc.When Diana eventually breaks the rules and becomes Lissa's friend, terrible consequences follow. Something old and malignant is unleashed when Lissa breaks into the Old Willis Place, and secrets long buried come to light. The story moves quite slowly in the beginning, and only takes off after Lissa enters the Old Willis Place. Children ages 9-12 will enjoy this suspenseful ghost story.

Horrible for children- unless you want them exposed to child abuse, murder, dead children and old witch that comes alive and haunt people and hurt people. And more.

This is my 10 year old daughter's favorite author. In fact, Mary Downing Hahn was the author that got my excellent reader to actually WANT to read. Before she'd read her required minutes and be done. We tried Little House, Sisters Grim, American Girls, and all of it was meh to her. Mary Downing Hahn broke through that. She really enjoyed this book.

Have you wanted to go into the old house at the end of the road? Have you walked through the woods and heard footsteps in the leaves behind you? Have you sat on a bench in the fall sunshine and heard a sigh beside you? Have you wondered about spirits that may lurk around you? Have you stared at a pale, thin figure with dark, wide eyes and thought...real or dead? You will thoroughly enjoy this book of dead children, banshee screaming dead old lady, murder, snakes and creepy broken houses. A quick read...but best done in the day!

There are plenty of books out there that inform you on how to start a business or get into a franchise. I rated this 5 stars because it gave me valuable preparation tools that were new to me. Great book.

Great book. As a small business owner, I have considered franchising, but wanted to do research in advance. This is an excellent read, helping potential franchisees to understand the inner workings of the franchise business before investing. I'm glad I downloaded this book.

This is a very short read with good advice built on personal experience with a failed franchise. Everyone thinking of buying into a franchise should take a few minutes to read it.

This "book" is a joke. It's more like a pamphlet. I'll save you the $10 - do your research; understand the risks; don't be stupid; and don't trust anyone except your own lawyers and accountants.

Have not been a business owner but gives perspective of what is needed to be one. Sure good to read about someone who has gone that route and I will learn from this if I ever become a franchise owner.

John Dewey was an American philosopher of the late 19th and 20th century best known for his espousal of a "pragmatic" philosophy and progressive political ideas, but he also wrote about Art. Art as Experience is not a book per se, but rather a rewriting of a series of lectures he gave on the "philosophy of art" at Harvard in 1931. Dewey's pragmatic philosophy emphasizing social relations between humans was hugely influential in social sciences like sociology, where he clearly inspired writers like Erving Goffman and anthropology (see Roy Rappaport) His influence has been less notable in the field of aesthetics and art theory, and that's a shame, because in my mind, Art as Experience is the best book about the role of Art in human experience ever written. Art as Experience starts from the observation that there can be no Art without an Audience- the two are intertwined because humans are social creatures and none of us exist in isolation. This statement about the nature of Art stands in direct contradiction to the two main schools of art philosophy: Classicism, which holds that Beauty is an objective truth that exists outside the experience of any single person and Romanticism, which postulates that the Artist stands alone in the world, without reference to his human environment. Much of the argument of Art as Experience takes the form of the language philosophy strategy of being extremely precise about the terms being used. This gives the actual text of Art as Experience a tedious feel, even as the ideas expressed dance and sparkle with the light of discovery. Dewey works his way through defining, having an experience, the act of expression, the expressive object, substance and form, etc. I won't lie- it's dry. Boring even. BUT, it's a book that every art critic, blogger, etc should be forced- AT GUN POINT- to read. That's because to read Dewey is to understand that Artists and Critics are on the same side- they both care and appreciate art and artistic products, and they both want to share their love/interest in art with a larger audience. This idea of critics attacking Artists for some real or perceived "failure" is revealed by Dewey to actually be a failure of the critic- for failing to understand that his or her own experience is intruding on their understanding of the subject of their criticism. It's a wonder to be that Dewey's Art as Experience isn't more commonly read and loved by Artists and Art critics, but I suppose he only has himself to blame- that man was not a prose stylist. I would say that if you were going to read a single book on the subject of the "Philosophy of Art" it would be this book- and that there isn't another book you need to read after this one. Particularly, while reading Art As Experience I thought of conversations I had with my friend/business partner- Brandon Welchez of the Crocodiles. Brandon often espoused the opinion- common to Artists that "Writing about music is like dancing about Architecture- i.e. pointless" and my response was basically, "Um..." but now I would reply that when a critic really understand the purpose of writing about art- to help clarify, illuminate and publicize worthy artists- and sharing one's interest in a specific art and artists with the wider world- art criticism can help to create an appreciative audience for a specific artist or art product where none existed before.

This book is worth the read for those who are interested in the arts. I'm an art student, and I read it out of personal interest. I found it very insightful in how Dewey defines art itself, and how I can approach creating my own art. It's a dense book, but it really helped me look at art in a more practical lense.

I LOVE ❤️ this book! It is very easy to read and even more important, relocate later what I've read. 162 pages are an alphabetical list of essential oils. Each is given 3 pages about the particular oil: a picture of the source, some history and description on the first page.page 2 includes info about research studies,safety, and the therapeutic components, while number 3 offers 7 uses for the particular oil.Further on we are given 89 pages for various conditions with suggestions of useful oils and applications. This is so helpful being alphabetical.But my very favorite is chapter 7! It is worth the price of this volume!I have a few other books on this subject, but this is the best.If you only buy one book on the subject, this is the one you should get.

I saw this book in my Chiropractors office and after looking at it for just a few minutes I knew I needed to have this book. The infomation in this book is vast and very well organized. The photography is gorgeous. Someone had complained in a review that the book had a cheap plastic spiral binder. It does have a spiral binder within the hardcover but, it is plastic coated metal. My only complaint about this book is the book itself and not the contents. The paper is very very thin. I would suggest going through the book gently at first as some of the pages stick close to the binding. I'm still going to give 5 stars though, because I know if it had better quality paper the book then would be around $60 or $70 as opposed to the $31 that I paid. So I'll just be more gentle with this awesome book!

But more importantly, the essential oils are presented in an excellent way with examples of how to utilize each oil.All in all, an expertly researched and terrific book!

Not sure how Erin threads together a staggering sum of content and makes it read like a Dan Brown novel, but she did. That's Erin working her usual wizardry. Would you expect something less after her blockbuster novel on Madoff? Short answer - emphatic 'no'.I was particularly struck by the latter chapters in the book. This will hit quite close to home for most of us. This section on the impact to schools and mass transit proves quite convincingly that LIBOR IS the worlds most important number.

I was expecting much more from this book or maybe even from the history itself. The first chapters are good but then it becomes a kind of "he said" and "he said" etc As it if wasn't enough to have all this scam between the traders of the biggest banks, It's also shocking to know that even the British authority (BBA) was involver in this too.I've found on the net the very much same history , and on some occasions, even with more details than in the book. It's Ok. You can find the whole history in websites like Bloomberg, economist etc.

In today’s complex financial world, borrowing rates are all around us, implicit in everything from our credit cards to our mortgages. Many of these ubiquitous financial products share a common reference rate, the London Interbank Offered Rate (or “LIBOR”), which represents banks’ near-term funding costs, and is a short term interest rate benchmark against which many floating rate loans are priced. So it's important.But what is it exactly?As I learned, LIBOR is simply an aggregate of the rates at which a handful of British banks estimate they could borrow from other banks. Sounds straightforward, but at a granular level what does that mean? Thus the stage is set for the big swindle.Examining how these rates are set and manipulated is the topic of “Open Secret: the Global Banking Conspiracy that Swindled Investors out of Billions,” by Erin Arvedlund, a financial journalist with the Philadelphia Inquirer. At a deeper level, this is a story about how the growth of global borrowing markets and financial instruments created a web of incentives that drove criminal behavior at money center banks.What I like about the book?I enjoyed in this book the same things I enjoy in a good Michael Lewis book: salty language, strong personalities, and outrageous behavior. It's a great combination. Arvedlund creates a narrative flow that makes otherwise impenetrable subject matter read like a spy novel. She not only has a grasp of the financial details, but she also spins a good yarn as she lays out the history of LIBOR, and the events and people that shaped it.In 1970, while soaking in a bathtub, an American named Evan G. Galbraith dreamed up the idea of a floating rate note, and shortly thereafter “LIBOR" appeared in a prospectus for the first time.From its modest beginnings, LIBOR took off in popularity, based on necessity and good marketing, expanding across borders, into larger deals, and into pricing for a range financial products such as home loans and credit cards, currency options, and later into the gigantic market for swaps.LIBOR, however, had a critical flaw from the beginning. The process for establishing LIBOR rates was based on an unregulated honor system, using an improvised, Rube Goldberg-esque, self-reporting arrangement.I had never heard it laid out so explicitly as Arvedlund does here, but in the early days, the reporting apparatus of the banks typically consisted a couple of guys sitting around an office over sandwiches consulting some rates and literally taking a stab at it. That's it. And here’s the thing: that never really changed as LIBOR’s use grew. It never became a regulated or formalized process, despite it's increasing role in financial markets. So this was the basic dynamic from the beginning. Arvedlund has done some reporter-like digging on these beginnings and how this turned into a very big problem, and while the stark reality is quite stunning, it’s also somewhat understandable, given LIBOR’s informal roots.A clubby approach like this was probably fine early on, and indeed the system seemed to work well for many years, but as LIBOR became more and more influential, incentives began to play a greater role.Arvedlund explains how the banks began to be afraid of appearing at the high end of the range of estimates, since this sometimes raised solvency/stability questions, which then appeared in the press. As a result, the banks began to artificially lower the rate they reported, so as not to appear to be in trouble.But the real conflicts came from trading activity. In banking there’s a so-called "chinese wall" between the buy and sell side. For instance, when I was on the sell side at GE Capital, we were instructed not to talk to our buy side, who were transacting in the bonds of sell side client companies. If the traders got wind that a company were about to issue a piece of high yield debt, they might be tipped off to trade the more senior bonds, which would be affected when this occurred. GE Capital took this very seriously. We even had creative code names for the deals to maintain secrecy.In the case of LIBOR, there was no such wall. Or rather, there was supposed to be a wall, but it was effectively ignored. The buy side traders would literally send a chat or email to the guys setting the rate and tell them where they needed the rate to be in order to maximize trading profits.Arvedlund details numerous emails, chats and communications showing how the traders worked the system. Some of these were borderline hilarious, including a description of how Colin Goodman, or “Lord LIBOR,” published a heavily manipulated daily “suggested LIBOR” list, but became miffed when traders ended up making all the money and he wasn’t getting compensated for his help. Poor Lord LIBOR couldn't get paid. Why he wasn't more concerned with getting thrown in prison, is unclear (and which, given recent alarming reports in the press, may still occur for poor Lord LIBOR).By 2008, with LIBOR impacting markets at the global level, including the commodities and multi-hundred trillion dollar swaps market, and the financial crisis underway, the Wall Street Journal ran a piece with the heading, “Study Casts Doubt on Key Rate: WSJ Analysis Suggests Banks May Have Reported Flawed Interest Data for Libor."Suddenly, the cat was out the bag, and central banks and regulators began to pay close attention. Arvedlund does a great job of giving a sense of the drama as this story unfolded, of the competing interests, and of the personalities involved.The dogged Wall Street Journal reporters. The central banker protocols. In particular, the British central banker Sir Mervyn King came across as turning a blind eye as well as being somewhat inept and feckless. The British Banker’s Association, which had actually trademarked LIBOR, seemed more focused on maintaining control of the rate than on solving collusion problems. And many more.Arvedlund describes how Tim Geithner, who was the New York Fed President and later became Treasury Secretary, pushed King to reform LIBOR and even provided a list of bullet point suggestions for how to address the issue, but was initially rebuffed. After all, LIBOR represented prestige and was a cash cow for the British financial establishment. LIBOR was also, however, the elephant in the room: everyone knew it was there but no one wanted to talk about it.Another central figure in the scandal was Barclay’s CEO, Bob Diamond. While Diamond comes across as upbeat and charismatic, he displayed a rapacious hunger for success and pay at odds with his easy-going persona and a staid British banking culture. Although it was Barclay’s who purchased Lehman Brothers out of bankruptcy, thus preserving an important element of the broader financial system, Diamond was forced to resign in 2012 after an investigation into LIBOR and public outrage.A key player who drove this resignation was Gary Gensler, head of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He pushed to scrap LIBOR throughout his tenure, appearing before congress over 50 times, but when faced with a sustained industry backlash eventually backed down.In the end, LIBOR survives today, and still plays an important role in financial markets, but it is more strictly regulated than before. The irony is that despite the substantial damage caused by LIBOR rigging, which cost investors billions, it was an uphill battle all along to reform LIBOR. Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly a more reliable benchmark than previously.Constructive CriticismAfter a good punchy beginning, the story kind of trailed off during the chaos of the financial crisis, the back and forth on discussions about the problem and how to fix it, and the efforts of the various regulators. I feel like Arvedlund lost the compelling narrative drive that made the beginning of the book especially good. Perhaps the subject matter became so sprawling that story necessarily became diffuse. Also, given the overall complexity of the situation, I can understand how it would be difficult to maintain a simple, coherent narrative.Also, early on in the book, I was curious about how the trades worked, and I wished there had been some concrete examples of trades and specifically how manipulation made them profitable, although this could just be my personal bias as someone who wants to know how every finance transaction works.Finally, in many stories, there is often a crisp resolution, but this resolution was decidedly murkier than I would have preferred. But that's probably not Arvedlund's fault. LIBOR today remains flawed in many ways, but then perhaps the story of LIBOR could never have a clean ending; this has nothing to do with Arvedlund's skill. At the end of the day, LIBOR includes so many elements of subjectivity in reporting and estimation that can never be fully resolved or eliminated, that there will never be a clean solution everyone can agree on that renders it somehow "fixed" in the traditional sense.Summary:Although the ending of "Open Secret" left some loose ends for me, the book offers a extraordinary view into the inner workings of the financial system, LIBOR, and the forces striving to maintain a level playing field.If you enjoy Michael Lewis, I'm confident you'll like Erin Arvedlund. One of the first books I ever bought to learn spanish. This book was originally written in 1955 but has been updated, revised and expanded. It really does make spanish easy to learn but you must take the time to study the book at least an hour per day. The author`s method for teaching you Spanish is very effective and impressive even by today`s standards even though it was written in the 50s. If something is good, it`s good no matter when it was made. I have read and studied many, many spanish books in my quest to become fluent and this book is the first book I would recommend to any beginner or intermediate learner and even advanced spanish students will learn plenty of spanish grammer and vocabulary here. In fact, I recently bought myself a new copy and started studying it again. I wanted to refresh myself on the lessons contained herein and I find that I am being reminded of many words and expressions that I forgot about and I am learning lots of new spanish. That`s what inspired me to write a review and tell people about this most excellent book for starting your spanish education and working your way up to fluency.

Text seems well planned (haven't gotten too far along yet!). I bought this for the kindle, so my review is on the electronic version of the book. The option to change font size does NOT work properly and if you make the font larger the display just runs out of sight. Changing the kindle to landscape helps a bit to get a larger view without each sentence running out of sight, but there are still limits to how big you can make the text. (Making the text larger is one of the best things about electronic formats - if your eyes are tired you can still read!) I was a bit disappointed in this, there does not seem to be any way to scroll over and see the rest of the text if you have enlarged the font (using kindle voyage). I have tried playing with options for margins and line spacing but nothing I have done allows the font to go beyond a certain size before it just cuts off the end of all the sentences of the page (instead of moving them down so you can continue reading).

I'm a casual user of Spanish. I've used, off and on, the original paperback version of this book for over 20 years. I vacation often in Mexico and have recently been to Spain. I'm comfortable with its "dialogue" format. I feel that I'm learning the language - not just picking up phrases to use in certain situations. I've tried Rosetta Stone and prefer this to merely parroting sounds. It's mix of dialogue, vocabulary, grammar and syntax has built, I feel, insight into the workings of the language which has generalized to a comprehension and familiarity beyond the book's lesson plans. I've received compliments from native Spanish speakers on my comprehension, pronunciation and skill regarding verb tenses.

This item was used - I knew that - but it was said to be "used-very good". I would disagree with the assessment because the spine is heavily worn, the cover is heavily worn and there are markings in red pencil and regular pencil throughout the book. In addition, there were quite a few scraps of paper in the book and an automobile decal as if the book had never even been looked at for evaluation. I had used the "Italian Made Simple" book years earlier, and this is why I wanted the "Spanish Made Simple" book of the series. It is a good language book, but it was more like "used-acceptable".

This is a good text for learning Spanish rapidly. The lessons are clear and well-organized. So far (I am on lesson 28 of 49), I find that each lesson takes from an hour and a half to two hours to go through, writing out all the exercises and practicing the dialogue out loud as directed. I am brushing up long-forgotten Spanish, and I also have a background in French, so it may take a brand new learner a bit longer to complete each lesson. I recommend spending a few days reviewing the material and practicing the vocabulary before proceeding to the next lesson.I have found, however, that there are several errors in the answer section...which is rather disconcerting when you are trying to learn something new. This text has been revised, and some of the answers may have been based on questions in an earlier edition, but they certainly should have been revised along with the text. Most of the errors are obvious and do not have to do with vocabulary or grammar...just with the content of the dialogue...a picture is now hanging over a bookcase, not the piano...that sort of thing. It's a bit annoying when your correct answer does not agree with the book. That's just sloppy on the editor's part.

I took Spanish lessons last year, and the instructor recommended this book. I thought it was a kind of workbook, with exercises I could do to help me remember.Turns out most of the lessons say memorize these words.That’s not what I need! I need more of a Duolingo kind of practice. Sitting around trying to memorize is not the best way to learn a new language.Waste f time and money.

I'm using this book in conjunction with the Pimslur Spanish 3 CDs, and am finally making progress in my quest to learn this beautiful language. This book presents interesting dialogues followed by progressive grammar lessons and exercises. I'm using this book in a class which provides the invaluable added experience of forcing you to use what you are learning thru speaking to others, so I highly recommend taking a class if at all possible. I would love to be able to just listen to tapes and absorb it all, but in my experience, you have to go thru the tedium of learning tenses and this book has helped make the process less tedious... Even enjoyable!

I purchased this book because it was recommended by my instructor. It is helpful and I like the exercises in it. I am not a beginner and have skipped over some parts, but, I have learned some from this book.

{My thoughts} – Everything I would imagine about a William Shakespeare play brought to life within the beautifully drawn images of Julien Choy. I honestly have never read this play before reading this book. It was enlightening for lack of better wording.Macbeth is told that he is meant to become the king of Scotland by some witches. Them telling him that put his plan to murder the current king into action. There is so much that takes place within the pages of this book that a simple review could not possibly give it justice.The illustrations and the text go hand and hand so nicely you’d think this was just how William Shakespeare wanted his play portrayed. The illustrations help to show the reader so many different raw emotions such as: anger, regret, guilt and more. I think the illustrations are a nice touch because they help to show more so much more to the reader. It doesn’t leave much space for one’s imagination about the scenes, but it does show the reader such raw emotion within the images that it’s alright.Macbeth is shown at his best, at his worst and in all the depictions he is shown as truly human.I think this book is a wonderful rendition of a Classic. I am going to need to read the actual play sometime in the near future. I think that reluctant readers will find this as a worthwhile read and who knows, they may even discover a new found love for William Shakespeare.

A new approach to an old classic that breathes life into a good story. This Macbeth interpretation is a great place for younger readers to start to learn and understand some of Shakespeare's more difficult dialogue.
