Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" is considered one of the greatest satirical works in the English language. Having recently taught this essay to two different groups of students, I can fully appreciate its varied approach to satire (Swift employs many devices, including irony, mock-heroic, and bathos).It's a quick read, but an essential one. This essay was written about the plight of the poor Irish trying to survive under the oppression of 18th Century England, an arrangement where England offered its protection, but in return seized their lands and dried up their resources. Still, Swift's jest points out a flaw that still exists today: the tendency for those who are comfortable to treat the poor like vermin or cattle instead of people.

What can I contribute to what has already been said about Jonathan Swift? A Modest Proposal exposed the harm and horror of the Irish famine - serving up epicurean delights to the rich while serving the modest interests of the poor. If you haven't read this long-ago written work, you are missing the depth of literary art taking on a challenge which ultimately helped produce a national conscience.

A great description of reality.

Most of us, including myself, read "A Modest Proposal" in high school. I decided to purchase a copy of the book, so I could read it again. It's quite an interesting and funny book. I can't even imagine how people of that era took the writing after it was published.

This is a quick read and yet one of the greatest classics of all time. Pick up a copy and read it again or have your kids read it to understand one of the greatest writers of all time.

Everyone has heard of A Modest Proposal. This made it very surprising when I found that the Battle of the Books by Swift is actually much better (it is included in this text). I good, small piece of literature. Worth buying.

Let me start by saying that I have read every book publish about the Selous Scouts (or had coverage of the Selous Scouts), and this book rates at the top of the list. This is for a few reasons. The first is that this book is affordable for all to read about this deadly and world renowned elite force. Most books on the Selous Scouts are out of print and/or very expensive to obtain, for that matter most Rhodesian Bush War books are generally all very expensive to obtain. For one they are printed overseas and shipping is also very, very high. It is not uncommon for a book with shipping to be over eighty dollars which if you are not a collector would be ridicules to spend. So for me this book rates high just for this reason.As for as content this book I will briefly hit some salient points;The contents;ForewordPrelude - A Brief History of War in Rhodesia. This chapter covers briefly conflict from settlement to the fall of Rhodesia in 1980. As well, as the coverage of Rhodesian participation in WWII with the SAS/LRDG and Malaya.Chapter One - The Formation of the Selous Scouts. This is an interesting chapter covering the evolution of the formation of the Selous Scouts from early beginning with nucleus of Special Air Service (SAS) troops and British South African Police (BSAP) experimenting with pseudo methods. This chapter clearly explains the command relationship between the Army, BSAP and Central Intelligence Organization (CIO), explaining the complicated but streamlined joint organization of the scouts. Finally it covers the initial selection and assessment process developed to get "into" the scouts.Chapter Two - Operations Commence. Covers in detail the merging of FireForce operations with Selous Scout pseudo teams acting as "pathfinders" for the Rhodesian Light Infantry (Commando0 (RLI) direct action elements to kill and capture terrorist. As well this section elaborates on the "turning" of terrorist for pseudo-operations.Chapter Three - External Operations - Terrorizing the Terrorist. This chapter does an excellent job at explaining the evolution of external operations by the Selous Scouts flying columns, as well it gives a brief overview of all the major external operations.Chapter Four - Intelligence and the Reconnaissance Troop. Covers the importance of intelligence, to support pseudo-operations as the techniques became known and semi-compromised by the BSAP and terrorist. The second half is on the formation and operational employment of the Recce Troop, in particularly the employment of small team and singleton recce operators for external missions.Chapter Five - The Selous Scouts Spies. Interesting look at the use of undercover Selous Scout agents externally in bordering countries for advance recce missions, intelligence collection, direct action and assassination.Chapter Six - The Mud Begins to Stick. This chapter covers the beginning of the end of the Selous Scouts, due to rivalry and service in-fighting; ultimately covering up to Reid-Daly's retirement and the disbandment of the scouts. Also covers a lot of the allegations of illegal activities supposable conducted by the Selous Scouts to include chemical warfare and poaching.Chapter Seven - Operation Miracle. This chapter covers some of the major operations up to "Miracle"; coving this operation in detail. As the author states this was the last hurrah for major Rhodesian operation. This was a somewhat conventional joint operation that included Rhodesian air assets, SAS, RLI and the Selous Scouts.Chapter Eight - The End. Is a brief look at Operation Quartzes and some of the various plans to assassinate Mugabe during the turbulent transition period. As well as the demobilization and disbandment of the legendary Selous Scouts.This book is lavishly illustrated with excellent maps, graphics and line drawings, as well as load of color and B&W photography, a lot I have not seen in other publications or on-line. The format of the book reminds me kind of like the Osprey line of books but with a whole lot more detail. The book is also physically larger at approximately 13.5"x 10.5" which is not a standard size print, but it works well with the format. This book is also volume four of the "africa@war" series, currently only a four volume set that includes;Volume 1 - OPERATION DINGO: Rhodesian Raid on Chimoio and Tembue' 1977 (Africa at War)Volume 2 - FRANCE IN CENTRAFRIQUE: From Bokassa and Operation Barracude to the Days of EUFOR (Africa@War)Volume 3 - BATTLE FOR CASSINGA: South Africa's Controversial Cross-Border Raid, Angola 1978 (Africa@War)If you found this book to be interesting I also recommend looking at;"Pamwe Chete" by Reid-Daly."Selous Scouts - Top Secret War" by Peter Stiff and Reid-Daly."Assignment Selous Scouts: Inside Story of a Rhodesian Special Branch Officer" by Parker."The Bush War In Rhodesia: The Extraordinary Combat Memoir of a Rhodesian Reconnaissance Specialist" by Dennis Croukamp."Selous Scouts: Rhodesian War-A Pictorial Account" by Peter Stiff.All I can say is this volume on the Selous Scouts is a must own and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in irregular warfare, counter-insurgency and military history.

I knew of the tracking skills of the Selous Scouts and was hoping to learn more details of their experiences in the field. This book documents the orgainization of the unit and its leadership. It gives the reader an overview of the operational capabilities of the Scouts. It also discusses the successful intergration of black and white operators in the unit. The Scouts were very successful in cross border counterinsurgency operations and developed the ability to turn captured guerillas into support troops.

This is an affordable option for anybody wanting to get an insight into this elite fighting force, the masters of pseudo-operations. I collect Rhodesian Bush War books and they are very difficult to get hold of, particularly those on the Selous Scouts. Even for those die-hard collectors, this should be a part of your collection.

A fairly good treatment of the Selous scouts, but could use a few quotes or actual stories from the real life participants. Only of interest to hardcore fans of that era in history, ie, Rhodesia and South African transitional history. Basically scholarly research. Doesn't give much of the feel of the actual people involved. Reads like the author did his research from historical records and neglected interviewing actual participants.

I originally was looking for Reid-Daly's book but it is not available in a Kindle edition. This book is a good first read on the subject of Selous Scouts and their contributions to save their country. Interesting, informative, enlightening. This book contains several good references to other published works to further my education on the subject. It also contained many photographs throughout.

Very concise and easy to read. I greatly appreciated the additional pictures and maps as they helped to show what conditions were like.

Very interesting portrayal of the members of the Best counterinsurgency group in modern history. What so few could cause so great a problem for insurgency was truly amazing. I actually had the pleasure of meeting a former member of the Scouts. Great man.

Get past the politics and read what the real world is about. Being a laymen who love the subject, this book was easy to understand. Although there is some technical stuff in there that over my head. Great read. Knowledge freedom.

This short book looks at the history of currencies for guidance on how long the U.S. dollar will remain the dominant global currency. Much of the history tells the story of how the world moved from the British pound as the international currency to the U.S. dollar. Using new data from the 1920's and 1930's, the authors show that this move happened faster and earlier than many people think. They disagree with the traditional view that dominant currencies will persist long after a country's economic dominance has declined. And they show that multiple reserve currencies can coexist. They expect the dollar will have rivals sooner than later.Although an academic book with some statistical analysis, the book is easy to read with short chapters that get to the point. Along the way, the authors explain why and how businesses and governments conduct currency transactions, which helps us understand what drives preferences in currencies. All of this work is relevant to thinking about changes that might take place if China overtakes the U.S. as the largest economy.

The Book is perfect, the only draw back is, that it is several years old, and most of the yarns these designs require are not available any more. It is hard to find the perfect replacement.

great ideas

I love this book. I plan to make many of the patterns, either with theribbon recommended or with substitutes. Lots of advice on how touse ribbon--I have used it aready. Knitting that I felt might bedifficult or knotty was not with the tips and hints inside.

This is one of the most disappointing knitting books I've ever purchased. I expected patterns that would highlight the beauty of ribbon yarns but all I got were a bunch of basic patterns for purses, halter tops, square cushions, etc.Author assumes that her reader does not know how to knit; at least a quarter of the pages in the book are how-tos that apply to any kind of yarn.

The book has several different styles. Some are very medeoker others are better. Have other ribbon books with more stylish items.

Knitting with ribbon yarns provides a variety to knitting with traditional wool yarns. Ribbon yarns produce a special look that makes your knitted product look unique and different. However, working with ribbon presents its own challenges even to an experience knitter. I picked up this book after working with ribbon yarn on my own and it definitely helped me solve some of the issues I encountered (e.g. best way to finish off without adding bulk) and provided many useful ideas and inspirations.The book is useful to both experienced and inexperience knitter. Below is a summary of content with my annotations. Hope you will find it useful.The basics section: 1. How best to work with ribbon yarn to avoid tangling 2. How to clean garments with ribbon yarn 3. How to substitute one type of ribbon for another when needed 4. Samples showing correct, too loose and too tight weaveThe basics chapters below have detailed step by step instructions, with each one having an image. They are very clear! 5. Casting and knit/purl basics 6. Binding off and connecting two sections 7. Shaping: increasing and decreasing garment width 8. Adding liners and zippers 9. Crochet embellishments 10. Crochet bind off 11. Finishing off - does and don'ts 12. Sewing seams 13. Reading patterns, including common abbreviationsClothing Collection section: 1. Sleeveless top with scalloped bottom. Great project, simple yet pretty I made this one. I loved the large scalloped bottom design. My modification was to add sleeves, as I don't like sleeveless shirts. 2. Halter-neck camisole 3. Shawl, decorated with tassels 3. Raglan sleeves top 4. Halter-neck top with back-wrap 5. Designer wrap, very elegant 6. Classic round-neck cardigan 7. Sleeveless polo-neck pullover. I really like how the color rolls on this design. 8. Super casual single-button vest. Simple design and this pattern really shows off the ribbon texture 9. Long-sleeved wrap-front sweater with pretty scalloped edge 10. Camisole top. I did not particularly like the design, but has a description of an interesting technique for twisted cords. 11. Summer ponchoAccessories section: 1. Cozy socks. Very cute! I plan to make them as a gift. 2. Hop belt. 3. Peruvian Hat 4. Hat and scarf. Useful technique for the scarves to make it two sections to make sure that designs on both ends match perfectly. I also liked the edging around the scraf.Bags section: 1. Beaded tote 2. Handbag 3. Argyle bag 4. Clutch bag 5. Long handled shopping bag (waaay too pretty for a shopping bag!) 6. Duffel bag 7. Dual-identity bag 8. Flower bagHome decor section: 1. Pillow 2. Cushion 3. Floor cushion 4. Wall hangingRibbon embellishmentsI really liked this section as I can see combining these ideas with some of my other project for a unique touch 1. Variety of knit ribbon flowers. 2. Variety of tassels 3. Fringing 4. BowsI already made one project out of the book, and have plan to use several more. This is another book that I saw in a shop and thought the price was ridiculous. I only liked a few of the patterns so I wasn't going to spend over $25 on 2 - 3 patterns. So I looked it up on Amazon, saw a much better price and purchased it. I am glad I did. I made 2 of the patterns in the book and was very pleased. If you like to knit with ribbon, you will like this book.

A wonderful book providing a myriad of ideas for those of us who need not only a BASIC review of knitting but an introduction to a NEW world of knitting. Thank you Chapman Tracy for such beautiful photos, tips, etc. I've already given this book as a gift and will continue to highly recommend it!

I read the 210-260 OCG book cover to cover, took the exam and failed with a 676. I went out and picked up a copy of 31 days before the CCNA Security exam, read that cover to cover and failed again tonight with a 778. I originally bought the paperback version of this book but I returned it because for an equivalent price you can get the Digital Study Guide version of this book from somewhere like Cisco Press and it includes videos, packet tracer labs, and end of lesson quizzes. The paperback version references the extra content in the Digital Study Guide but gives you no way to access it. Very disappointing.I passed the CCNA Security this morning with an 888. You need an 860 to pass. I used the Digital Study Guide version of this book, the Boson Exam Environment for CCNA Security, and cbtnuggets.com. Honestly, the Boson Exams and cbtnuggets.com helped more than anything else. I also used the Boson Exams and cbtnuggets.com to pass the CCNA Routing and Switching a couple years back. I hope this information can help anyone who is out there trying to find study material. Give the Boson Exams and cbtnuggets.com a try. They are awesome and incredibly thorough!

not even close to what is on the exam typical cisco crap test that asks question not even in any published material..cisco sucks. company is always taking peoples money for tests and faulty software solutions..

pretty good review...as author states, do not only use this book for studying...read two or three times...fairly quick read...got the kindle edition, did good...

You can not pass the exam alone with this book but it definitely is a valuable tool in filling in the gaps of other study resources.

Good to use if you don't have other resources.

Although this is the last book in the series (I believe), my review applies to the entire set. When we bought the initial book, Manga Messiah, I admit I was desperate to find anything biblical in nature that wouldn't make our 16-year old's "head spin around." Through peers and other influences, she had become that antagonistic toward our Christian faith. Since she had once been a Manga fan, we thought we'd tried the first book in the series, Manga Messiah. Our daughter, who is also a special needs child, absolutely loved it! She didn't even realize at first that the Jeshua in the novel was the same Jesus she had grown up hearing about. She said the story was so exciting and she loved the graphics. Before she was even done with the first book, she was begging us to buy the next one. Of course we did, and eventually purchased all the novels in this series. For our family, at least, these books have been an answer to prayer and have allowed us to have healthy conversations about the Bible, faith, and morals--something we couldn't have imagined two years ago.

This is a great book to read. I love it! It has 1 kings, 2 kings, Jonah, Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, part of Chronicles 1 and 2, Jeremiah, part of Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Ezra, Esther, part of Malachi, and part of Nehemiah. So I would definitely recommend buying this book. And also this book will get you to easily understand the Bible more often.

My son LOVES these books. He has autism, and rarely picked up the bible until i picked up several of these books. Now my son loves bible trivia, because he knows a LOT. Very excited to get the Messengers and will be buying him another book for Christmas.

This is a great tool to help children know about the Bible in this age when Manga is taking the children mind.

This is a Manga book of the Prophets of the Old Testament. I really enjoy the art and the stories stay true to scripture and can help in understanding with the comic style. This would be great for a non native English speaker to understand the bible better. I think alot of prayer and effort went into this. So have fun and enjoy the Old Testament. Good for all manga fans.

Using manga to portray Bible prophecy is a master stroke. All too often, the Bible is viewed as irrelevant because it was written "long long ago and far far away." The reader can get bogged down in the odd names and customs and esoteric language and miss the message. This book cuts through all that static. The characters are real people living in a world that is adversarial but often attractive. Best of all, the text is accurate and "fills in the gaps" in a plausible way. While "Manga Messengers" is no substitute for the Bible, it would be an excellent introduction to it.

I was introduced to NLP quite some time ago which was a big part of a Tony Robbins workshop training. And when I saw this book offered, my hope was that I would reconnect to some of the NLP principles taught by John Grinder and Richard Bandler back in the 1970s. The purpose of their collaboration as the author of this book, John Stanford says, is to explore some of the quickest, easiest and most effective techniques for creating empowering personal change. Here is a clear and concise step-by-step guide combining neurology, language and programming. This book really does that. The exercises are great and allow you to make positive changes that really work and quickly to change your recurring negative emotions, for instance. I particularly enjoyed and now use the “Perceptual Positions” section which allows a person to view experiences from many different perspectives, not only looking at things through our own eyes but sitting back and seeing things through a second positions, another person’s perspective and a third perspective, one that is disassociated. A book well worth reading and hanging out with for awhile.

The mind is an incredibly powerful tool, but it’s also hard to control: a lot of things take place subconsciously. NLP is a great technique to get more control of your mind and change it. This is particularly effective when trying to get rid of negative emotions, which can have a big impact on your life.This book is a brief introduction to NLP and how you can use it to bring about personal change. It discusses topics such as how to create “resource states” and how to use timelines to change negative emotions that keep recurring. By taking control of your mind and negative emotions, NLP allows you to improve your life and future by feeling better and more self-confident. I also found the last Chapter on “perceptual positions” interesting. Overall, a nice introduction to NLP!

John really has a fantastic grip on NLP. This book is filled with everything needed to get started right away. So, it was a breath of fresh air learning about how the awesome power of timelines can really make a difference for me. He finishes his book by pulling it all together. This book has really sold me on how to unleash the power of NLP. Great for anyone who wants to learn more.

Although the book is very technical and some people might find it complicated I found it interesting. What happened to Scott Dominguez should never have happened. It's tragic and horrible. I can't understand a law that doesn't allow him to be awarded any compensation to help with his medical bills and continuing care. That should be changed. Why should victims of environmental crimes be treated differently than victims of other crimes. I am glad Elias went to jail but it wasn't for nearly long enough. He should serve for as many years as Scott has to live with his disabilities. I was touched by his story and wonder how he is doing. I pray that he is able to find some peace and happiness in his life. What happened to him matters and the telling of his story was important for us to hear. It should never have happened but since it did it's important that we heard about it.As for Robert Dugoni, I've read all of his other books. He is one of my favourite authors. Although this book is very different than his others, I am glad I read it. It brought me to tears in many places. I couldn't put it down. He made everyone so real to me. I appreciated that he put the notes in about where they are now. I don't think I will ever forget Scott and what happened to him. I wonder how he is doing now. I believe that is an indication of a well written book. When the people stay with you long after you put the book down. Thank you for bringing something so important to our attention and doing it so well.

I received a free advance review e-copy of this book and have chosen of my own free will to post a review. ‘The Cyanide Canary’ is very well written and a true real life environmental drama. Couldn’t put it down. This is a story of a young man who nearly dies and suffers severe brain damage for the rest of his life due to the negligence and poor safety practices of the owner of the company. It is tragic and unconscionable. What a long and arduous legal process to enforce environmental law with denials, cover-ups, twists, turns, etc. Robert Dugoni does a great job of writing a book that is easy to follow and readable in everyday language so that anyone can understand the workings of the EPA and what really happened here. I like his style. This is a book that everyone should read.

In writing this gripping documentary of a landmark case in the history of the EPA, the authors have done a service that, in my opinion, is comparable to the original event. It should be read by every thinking American, whether they support environmental regulation or not. Constructing this narrative was in itself a monumental task. And it puts in stark relief the difficulties faced by those who would try to protect our citizens from even the worst environmental criminals. It is also a highly compelling story. I couldn't put it down.

Fantastic story that I could not put down. Told quite objectively and very well documented, it somehow managed to fill its pages with emotional content as well, making one feel that you were there....in the courtroom, in Scott,s family home, and in the field. An amazing cast of folks from all walks of life are kept well sorted and described until you feel you know them (i.e. Stay with it thru the first few chapters). Twists and turns throughout. But most of all, this legal thriller provides deep insight into the history of a key case that illustrates the challenges faced by the US government agencies and courts that cope with one of the most difficult issues of our time: environmental crimes.

This book makes my blood boil. It is an eye opener on an environmental crime. The man who was responsible is just one of so many environmental criminals. It makes you wonder how many others are out there who never get caught or just get a slap on the wrist and go back to business as usual. It is also no wonder that there are so many sick people stricken with cancer and other diseases that could possibly be traced back to exposure from [these crimes]. They are destroying our planet. It is truly frightening. It also gives me insight on why FIVE of my immediate family members have been stricken with cancer, and that’s just the side of my family that I know about. You should read this book. Now I understand the mentality of “ tree huggers”

The Cyanide Canary is a tough, non-fiction account of actual industrial practices and why we need the EPA. It is reported in an interesting way, however. Although there are times it is hard to read, there are many more times the reader is deeply into what is going on, thanks to the writing of Bob Dugoni.When a young man is severely damaged by cyanide gas in his work environment, the EPA agents become actively involved in discovering who made what decisions and why they tried to cover it up. When the case carries sufficient weight to lay charges and take the owner to court, they still have a tough fight with defense attorneys who specialize in that kind of work, undermining witnesses for the prosecution, even those who were nearly killed on the job. Joseph Hilldorfer worked with the EPA from beginning to end of this long but vitally important case, co-authoring The Cyanide Canary.The course of this case runs years, and I wouldn't have missed this story for anything because now I know the importance of monitoring industry from what actually HAS happened to real people. It isn't just theory or opinion. Reading this book should be required in several university courses, starting with those about the environment, some about big industry where bucks count more than human lives, etc.

Loved reading this as I have worked as an environmental professional for my entire career. I worked for several years on the EPA Technical Assistance Team contract providing emergency response and site investigation for hazardous waste sites. During those years I have had the opportunity to work closely with the EPA CID and USCG Strike Team on criminal investigations and response to illegal use and disposal of hazardous waste. These folks are extremely dedicated and some of the most intelligent folks that I have worked with in my career. So glad to see this book shine the spotlight on their service in protecting the public and the environment.
