I became addicted to Isak Dinesen after reading Judith Thurman's comprehensive biography of her. And, I just had to, also, read more about Denys Finch Hatton, Dinesen's main love interest. This book is noteworthy, primarily because Sara Wheeler writes very well with a wckedly surprising and dry sense of humor. This is the main reason to read this biography, Sara Wheeler's writing skill. ( Wheeler is a great nature writer, also, and a fantastic describer of The Great War in Africa. Just a part of Finch Hatton's life but a part that Wheeler brings to vivid life.) She then constructs Finch Hatton's life out of thin air, as they say. There's not much to Finch Hatton's life story for Wheeler to grab onto because he died young and left little in the way of letters and papers. He seems, though, to have charmed most he met, seems to have been a good casual friend and was just settling down in his forties when he died. ( Note that he had drawn a will before he died, but he left nothing to Dinesen--even though he knew she was losing her farm. This says a lot about his life, his maturity in an age when people were supposed to be grown up at an earlier age than we .)Read this book to round out your knowledge of the 1920s and 1930s, especially in Africa's British colonies.

This book needed a good editor. It was as if the author simply compiled all the information she could find and spit it all out. Disappointing as I had just finished Circling the Sun and was hoping to continue the story lines.

Denys Finch Hatton was the second son of an earl, a highly privileged aristocrat who seemed to have everything: good looks, charm, adored by men and women alike. Denys' family could trace their ancestry back to Sir Christopher Hatton, Queen Elizabeth's courtier. However his personal claim to fame teeters on a very flimsy base: he was the lover (among others) of two famous women- Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) and Beryl Markham, British East Africa's literary doyennes. Without "Out of Africa" and "West with the Night" Denys would long ago have disappeared, plowed under by the bulldozer of history. It is almost impossible to flesh him out although this thorough biography tries hard and presents a great deal of information. The real Denys is still elusive. It is difficult to appreciate just what it was that made him so universally acclaimed and to this reader, at least, he remains an enigma.Too close to the sun refers, of course, to the flight of the Greek Icarus whose father Daedalus crafted for his son feathered wings soldered together with wax. The young man in exhilaration flew so close to the sun that the wax melted and he plummeted to his death. The title of Wheeler's biography is very pertinent to the life of Denys Finch Hatton. The metaphor of the book title is that Denys had the opportunity and talent to achieve success and fame from his own merits and efforts, but instead he only lives on in the works of others. And of course his plane crashes, like Icarus plunging to earth, his wings destroyedDenys was languid and totally without ambition, not competitive although he did hate losing a game such as chess. His inheritance and social standing, even in British East Africa, allowed him to rub shoulders with the moneyed, titled class of British colonists. The British ex- patriots took their class distinctions right to BEA (later Kenya). As an aristocrat he could hobnob with the titled as could Karen Blixen by virtue of her title, BaronessA great deal of background information is provided in the book such as descriptions of Denys' family and his activities in Africa during World War I. But let us cut to the chase and introduce Tania, Denys' name for Karen Blixen. Although several reviewers have remarked upon author Wheeler's dislike for Tania, I felt that Wheeler's portrait is quite reasonable. She describes Tania as "neurotic" and without a sense of humor. Tania considered her life a performance and wanted to be the heroine of every scene, having a high regard for her own importance and her own place. She may have loved her native servants but Wheeler remarks that her Africans were actually extensions of the African landscape.Nobody would describe Tania as easy to get along with but "Out of Africa" and her short stories propelled her into a plane far above Denys Finch Hatton : she was not Icarus, her wings got singed but she kept them intact. She lost Denys and she lost her African farm but she achieved immortality through the majesty and beauty of her writing. "Out of Africa" is sublime. Her biggest mistake as regards her relationship with Denys was that she became too possessive. Denys wanted total freedom with no restraints and Karen's clutching of him drove him right into the arms of Beryl Markham , a notorious bed-hopper who wanted freedom to do whatever she wanted, just like Denys. Author Wheeler describes the relationship of Tania and Finch Hatton as being like two beaters of a rotary whisk that spin and never touch, an extraordinary metaphor that seems spot on.Author Wheeler excuses any faults and eccentricities of Denys but she does not excuse Karen Blixen. Tania was very strange, very outré and at times could act ludicrously. Her servants had to wear white gloves when serving dinner and she and Denys dressed for dinner even when they were alone. That Tania adored Denys there is no doubt but did he adore her? No. She was convenient, her house was convenient and although he surely enjoyed her company as long as she didn't try and ensnare him into a permanent relationship (marriage) things went well. However, he could be cruel. The two lovers had a code for any future child of theirs -Daniel. When Denys was away. Tania was sure she was expecting and wired him. He replied "Strongly urge you cancel Daniel's visit."* In other words, get an abortion.Although others have described Denys as a "Renaissance Man" he did not achieve enough to earn that description. He was a big game hunter, consorted with the Prince of Wales, and Kermit Roosevelt and other wealthy safari clients. Perhaps his greatest achievement was his attempt to interest clients in photographing the wildlife rather than shooting it. Not exactly an over-whelming achievement.Wheeler's biography is very well written in a distinctive style. But I found myself skipping chapters to get to the meat of the biography- Karen Blixen. That is not the fault of the author, it's just that Denys without Tania, or Beryl Markham for that matter, doesn't interest me.*Denys'wire has been disputed as no record of it now exists. Judith Thurman mentions it in her book "Isak Dinesen". It does seem out of character that Denys would wire anything so hurtful to his lover or to anyone for that matter.

Too Close to the Sun, The Audacious Life and Times of Denys Finch Hatton is as much a detailed history of British East Africa--the country known today as Kenya--as it is the story of Denys Finch Hatton's life. In other words, the focus is keener on the times than on the life.Finch Hatton, a notorious and romantic character portrayed in Out of Africa (Modern Library), the book of stories by Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) and the in the film played by Robert Redford, didn't keep a journal or, for that matter, write many letters. As a result, a great deal of the exhaustive research on him compiled by dedicated author, Sara Wheeler, is derived from Dinesen's fiction and other contemporary, Beryl Markham's autobiography, West With the Night. Generally well written, a bit on the formal side, the prose wavers between colorful and descriptive and textbook laborious. (Have your dictionary nearby!) The subject, Finch Hatton, might have been better left to the material written by his former lovers than the subject of an entire biography. What I enjoyed most about this book was the trip to Kenya and the stunning visuals it provided. Having spent time there, including a visit to the town now known as "Karen," and a tour of Blixen's house, the pages of this book gave it a living history quality. Wheeler also clarifies Finch Hatton's character as more than the uncommitted lover of Karen Blixen ("Tania")--"They were living in different mental worlds, as unhappy lovers do, coexisting like the twin beaters of a rotary whisk, spinning in time by never touching"-- but also notes he was one of the first to point out the dangers of uncontrolled hunting on safari endangering Africa's wildlife. "For the first time in his life, he had found something he believed in, a cause that was worth commitment." Hence, his legacy as "an eternal wanderer on a perpetual quest for knowledge and experience," which is the main thrust of this dissertation.Michele Cozzens, author of I'm Living Your Dream Life: The Story of a Northwoods Resort Owner.

I’ve read the author’s first two novels, which were fun and not the usual predictable plot. This one was not quite as good. It was just kind of plodding, and the characters lacked pizazz somehow. I never invested in them emotionally. Not awful, cute on spots but I hope next time, the spark is back.

I was enjoying the story but was waiting for someone to ruin it at the same time. I liked the suspense.

First of all, I have to take my hat off to the cover designer for SUMMER ON THE ITALIAN LAKES by Lucy Coleman as it so beautiful and I found myself going back to look at it time after time. And I am delighted to say that the story inside is just as stunning! What do you do when you're a romance author who doesn't believe in romance anymore? Well, that is the situation that Brie finds herself in after she is dumped by her celebrity boyfriend. Needing to write another bestseller Brie just cannot find the spark that always came so easily to her before but it's not surprising considering all of the online abuse and media intrusion that she has experienced. But after her loved ones give her a stern talking to, Brie knows that she needs to do something to get herself out of this funk that she has fallen into and soon she has more than one book idea brewing. When the opportunity to teach in Italy presents itself, Brie jumps at it with both hands as who wouldn't be inspired by the beauty and culture of the Lakes and when she meets Arran Jamieson, romance may just jump off the page and into her life ...The setting is stunning in SUMMER ON THE ITALIAN LAKES and Lucy Coleman has a real talent for painting the soul of a place and making you desperate to visit there yourself. The characters are well-developed and engaging and I was rooting for Brie from the very beginning and by the end felt like she was an old friend. There are romance and laughter, questions of self-worth and self-belief, and all of it combines to make this my favourite Lucy Coleman book so far.SUMMER ON THE ITALIAN LAKES by Lucy Coleman is a must-read for romance and contemporary fiction fans everywhere and I cannot wait for Lucy's next book.*I voluntarily reviewed this book from Netgalley

Brianna Middleton is a successful writer but struggling to find her mojo to finish her current work-in-progress. She's also single and lacking confidence after her previous relationship severely dented her confidence. When her agent asks her to stand in for another writer on a four-week assignment in Italy to assist on a writing retreat, she's sceptical but accepts the challenge. Her first impressions of her host are strained, but with a stunning backdrop against Lake Garda, the trip not only triggers her creativity but opens her mind and heart to find love.Although the main focus is on Brie and Arran, I devoured all the information surrounding the writing retreat classes. If you, like me have sat down to write, you'll love all the details about the writing process the author poured into this part of the narrative. It's unexpected, yet played a huge part in my overall enjoyment along with the antics of the protagonists and their guests.I enjoyed how Brie took stock of her life and let go of her inhibitions to explore the opportunities presented to her, including Arran. As the hero, I always appreciate getting to know ones perceived as difficult, until we learn more about them. It's exciting when the attraction becomes more than a furtive glance and a slight touch. Complimenting the tentative relationship is the stunning Italian Lakes backdrop and the tantalising descriptions of the sights, sounds and smells of the area.Around the 75-80% mark, the narrative dragged on and ran out of steam. Until this point, I adored the time the protagonists were in Italy and remained invested in them after the plot shifted back to the UK. However, the additional plot-lines concentrating on secondary characters took away the focus from Brie and Arran in what I can only think is a way of building interest for a future novel? If this is the case, it didn't work for me as I didn't connect sufficiently to those characters and it cast a shadow over what had been until that point a fabulous read.Overall, many high points make this a lovely, fascinating romance; two very different authors finding a common ground between them, the inclusion of the writing retreat class information and lastly, Lake Garda's beauty and culture. This combination works perfectly and anything else for me was surplus to requirement.***arc generously received courtesy of Aria via NetGalley***

The Lost Tomb of King Arthur by Graham Phillips is excellent. Mr. Phillips is an enthusiastic amateur searching for the lost grave of the mythical King Arthur made famous by countless books and movies. Most, if not all, “real” historians and archeologist have long rejected the famous king as only a romantic myth, but Graham Phillips decided to doggedly search out every remaining inkling to determine if the ancient post-Roman king did exist and, if he did, where he might be entombed.Mr. Phillips believes he has turned the trick and actually found not only that the king actually existed, along with Merlin – not as a wizard – but also his final resting place. He has managed to obtain the assistance of the National Geographic Society, and successfully uncovered connecting clues that were overlooked or discounted by the professionals.Graham Phillips searched the archives of many a dusty book of lore, and trod the actual physical locals of the forts and battles in his pursuit of the real history of the kings of the Britons. Normally, this would be dull reading; however, Phillips has managed to turn this dull and dusty quest into an enjoyable and fascinating read. It was a lot of fun following his various clues. The author is able to bring real life to the subject of the post-Roman period in England and easily explains what happened after the Angles and Saxons arrived. The overthrow of the Britons is a torrid story filled with heartbreak and conquest, fleeing queens and kings, and the contest for power. This is history at its best. For those of a more cynical bent, Mr. Phillips does base most of his search on linguistic associations. He is an expert at putting together clues from ancient languages, fascinating in itself, but somewhat limiting as far as archeology is concerned. Since there are no records of note from the time following the departure of the Roman Legions, Mr. Phillips has to follow the scantiest of clues to his goal. Did he lose his way? Mr. Phillips admits much of the evidence is thin. Those looking for hard boiled substance, such as stone carved lists, headstones with particular names, signed histories with exacting places catalogued written in 500AD will be sorely disappointed. After all, the history is lost because these archeological items and historical writings do not exist. If they did exist there would be no need for Mr. Phillips.I think the author has done a credible job of tracing through a spider web of almost nothing to a reasonable conclusion about King Arthur and his final resting place. The threads are faint, but no historian could have done better. He is a brilliant thinker and his ability to connect traces of fact to actual artifacts, poems, and stories is remarkable. Is he right? Until more is known it is impossible to tell, but his story is gripping, fun, and insightful in ways everyone can appreciate.Highly recommended.AD2

I will say right from the start that 2 things are quite obvious about this book. 1) It is entertaining and 2) The author thinks quite highly of himself, though he does not consider himself a historian, an archaeologist, or even a professional textual researcher. The best way to describe it, is when someone gets a little knowledge in a subject, and instantly knows more than their professors at University, who are obviously not as smart as them. This is the feel one gets - especially if they ARE a historian, or archaeologist, or anthropologist. However the book is topically entertaining, and other then some roughly constructed rhetoric, reads like a great Jr. High 'historic novel'. So if you want a light read on an interesting topic, written by a professional writer who believes they are far more knowledgeable then the actual experts in the field (and which WILL make any serious scholar belly-laugh), this is your book. If you also believe that ancient astronauts formed the Maya civilization and the pyramids in Egypt, or that archaeology and field research is just like the Indiana Jones movies - GET THIS BOOK NOW! It gets 4 stars for entertainment (Comedy) and 2 stars for content and quality of research - so 3 stars on average.

This book is well researched and then reasoned from the facts, with due diligence given to possible counter arguments. While the archeological evidence has yet to be attempted, this is the most cogent case for the existence of Arthur I have read.

An incredibly well considered and documented journal of another search for the historic King Arthur, Camelot and his tomb on the Isle of Avalon. Phillips makes a very compelling case through careful linguistic detective work and meticulous documentation and cross-referencing of multiple sources. While this is an academic work primarily, it has enough personality to hold a serious reader. I was reading it as an addition to existing research I'm engaged in and in that task, it added a great deal to my knowledge of early England, Wales and Anglesey. If you have an easy time with Welsh and Brythonic pronunciations and have a serious interest in the Arthurian Sagas, then you'll really enjoy this book. The color plates in the paperback version are worth every bit of extra cost. The book is also well covered with internal maps to aid in mentally retaining all the information. This is truly a storehouse of ancient locations and names and the author does present a great deal of evidence in support of his conclusions. Add a star if this kind of reading is one you enjoy.

I couldn't put this book down, its fabulous! Mr. Phillips has written an incredible book of academic, yet in an entertaining manner that makes it a pleasure to follow him through the pages of his journey. Two decades of research and clever investigation to piece together a legendary story that goes beyond the romantic sagas that we are all so acquainted with. He breathes life into the real man behind the legend, re-writing history with his thought provoking theories.Thank you Mr. Phillips!
