Guide? This is a teeny, tiny pamphlet that promises to "list several forms of appropriate versus inappropriate documentation." In fact there are only three examples shown and they aren't anything that you couldn't come up with on your own. This "guide" measures about 6"x4" and is about 3mm wide (tiny). Most pages are written in bullet point style with only about 8-10 sentences on the page. I know the description said it is small enough to take with you but really, I have many nursing books that I can carry with me. This is nothing more than a pamphlet. I was looking for something that would help me with documenting my crisis care patients decline as I often go in at end of life. This guide doesn't help with that. Not sure who would benefit from this guide, it's not appropriate for Hospice admission nurses, to little info for a case manager and not helpful for crisis care. I would have given 1 star but I gave an extra 1 for the effort. It is a much needed guide, if only she would have went into much more detail and written a book.

I agree with some of the other reviews. Not enough! It was more like a pamphlet and not a book. It contained some Good examples and comparison just not a lot of material.

Mostly basic info and only helpful if just starting in hospice. Most hospice electronic record charting will make you chart the things mentioned here. I prefer the hospice flipcharts book, even being more expensive.

If you are an experienced RN new to hospice this book is not helpful, at all. Maybe helpful for a really really new nurse? Also, maybe not. Very small book, 6"x4", with only obvious things written on the very tiny pages... all 25 of them. Mostly lists of bullet points. All obvious. This info could have been conveyed in a blog or by asking a more experienced hospice nurse to review your documentation.

Absolutely USELESS. My nine yr old could have written a better resource. Totally not worth the money. It has 24 pages front and back with very large font and BASIC nursing information. For someone who has been a nurse longer than a MINUTE.. look elsewhere for for your information.

Very good

this was not worth the price

very generic

La breve y maravillosa vida de Oscar Wao (Vintage Espanol) (Spanish Edition), by Junot Díaz Achy Obejas

From Booklist

Mature Spanish speakers, especially those from Latin America, will find Obejas’ exquisite rendition as powerful and moving as the much-awarded English original, published for adults. To assist readers, the translator aptly includes footnotes to explain colloquial expressions and references that may be new to Latin Americans, such as American TV series and comic books. She also clarifies neologisms and colloquial expressions. Set in the Dominican Republic at the time of dictator Trujillo’s horrific regime and in hardscrabble New Jersey neighborhoods, Oscar’s and Lola’s painful stories mirror the struggles within Latino families and their communities. Review

He vuelto a ser dominicana.

It's OK..

This book is excellent in English. The translation doesn't 100% capture the tone of everything that is said in the English version but it does capture the broad message and story

Wonderful story, Junot doesn't disappoint. A must read.

No me gustó tanto

This wonderful collection of creation myths is a book I've had my eye on for a few years now. I rapidly devoured this book, as most of the creation myths are only a page or two, and there are beautiful full-page illustrations throughout. There were a handful of myths I was familiar with, and I think there were only two myths in the entire collection I did not enjoy. Toward the end of the collection, Hamilton presents myths I found very familiar--Greek myths and Judeo-Christian myths. I feel that most readers would be familiar with these tales, so it makes sense to save them for the end of the book, but as I read them I found myself longing for more "original" tales from Africa, from North America, from Russia. Perhaps a second volume of creation myths is necessary; it's one I'd gladly read!

These are not only great stories, but I bought them before I realized they were illustrated by the incomparable Barry Moser. His illustrations really make the book, and the little boy I bought it for loves it. Very pleased by this book.

This fascinating collection is quite an entertaining read. It's a real eye-opener to see what all these cultures' creation stories have in common. Definitely worth your time, and not nearly as difficult as Joseph Campbell's work.

This is such an interesting book and bigger than I expected it to be. Great way to learn about the different ways cultures explained where they came from when they had such a limited view of the world at the time. Highly recommended.

My children are 12 and 5. Both of them are enjoying learning mythology from other countries. I think it is important to let your child explore other creation stories from around the world.I really enjoyed this book. The pictures are beautiful, the book is very informative and it is objective. I was very surprised to see the Christian creation myth being presented as a story like the rest.I seen other reviews about the book not being a kid book, I disagree. If your child is used to long stories and even chapter books at 5, they will be able to sit for this book. If you have never read those types of books to your child then it will be new to them and you will lose their attention. I would say 12 is probably the perfect age but 5 was very possible. It depends on the child and what their past experiences have been.Overall, buy this book! It's a must have for a skeptics library or for parents who are allowing their children to pick their own path in life.

This compilation of world creation myths is a very interesting and informational book; well written, and has beautiful paintings to accompany each creation myth. I find it intriguing that many cultures from around the world separated by continents, oceans, mountains, and time can have many similar characteristics and yet be all distinct and different from each other.Cultures' and religions' myths featured include: Greek, Jewish, Christian, Mayan, Minyong, Egyptian, Marshallese, Tahitian, Babylonian, Nigerian, Icelandic, Zambian, Huron, Krachi, Northern Aranda Aborigine, Chinese, and many more for a total of 25 myths. One thing I would like to have been different was to have fewer Greek mythology tales and have had more lesser-known (or unknown) myths, and represented an even wider range of cultures from around the world.

Perfect introduction for my daughter to the many ways religion talks about creation.

Great collection of creation stories! Currently reading to my children.

This was the first book on the jewelry of Oman which I purchased, before I knew better. Simply stated, the book is fraught with errors. The author makes frequent reference to regions of Oman, yet does not see fit to include a map. On page 17, a photo captioned as 6 anklets, in fact shows 4 upper arm bracelets, and 2 anklets. The anklets, also shown on page 56, are from the Baluchi minority community of Oman. On page 30, of the 15 rings shown, the 11 without stones are parts of the 10 ring married women's sets, of which there is no mention. The 4 pointed rings are the first finger rings of such a set. On page 39 Rajab mentions the 10 ring sets (a different patterns for each finger) worn by married women, but shows a most atypical style for the first finger ring. On page 32 the caption mentions "D" shaped bracelets, none of which is pictured. The photo shows 4 bangles and 2 cuff bracelets. The "D" shaped bracelets are just that, narrow, solid silver, and shaped like the letter "D", and shown on page 64. Page 37 shows a "Shebaq" necklace "probably from Nizwa", which is in Eastern Oman. "Oman Adorned" states that the "Shibgat" comes from Central Oman, and was hung from the ears, as shown in many photos. Pages 42 and 43 show 3 necklaces "probably from Nizwa", with reference to photos #s 9, and 24. Photo 24 does not show a necklace of this type. The necklaces are from "Sharquiyah". They are massive, up to 48" long and over 1 kilo in weight, as I own 4 of them. I recommend that one look for a copy of "Oman Adorned - A Portrait in Silver", large format, gorgeous photos, jewelry shown on women as it was worn, 362 pages, and costing $450.00 or less.

Jehan Rajab, co-director of the Tareq Rajab Museum in Kuwait, gives us another fascinating glimpse of the museum's collection in this small but important publication."Silver Jewellery of Oman" is primarily a vehicle to display the awe inspiring silver jewellery held by the Rajab Museum, beautifully photographed and accompanied by informative text. From the intricate headdresses worn by Bedu women in Oman to the neckpieces from Sur which so closely resemble designs worn by the Hill tribes of Thailand, each piece of jewellery is lovingly displayed, often accompanied by images of Omani life captured on film by Tareq Rajab. This book is a must for any serious jewellery collector. The massive collection of silver jewellery at the museum is currently being catalogued. One would hope that further publications revealing other aspects of the Tareq Rajab Museum jewellery collection will soon be forthcoming. For readers interested in Middle Eastern jewellery, we recommend Jehan Rajab's 1989 "Palestinian Costume", which contains a chapter on 20th century Palestinian jewellery.

I bought two copies of this wonderful book a couple years ago and continually enjoy leafing through the pages. It gives the true collector and afficianado of ethnic jewelry an insight and appreciation of traditional and unique Omani Bedouin classic pieces that were fashioned for the most part, from the silver Maria Theresa dollar. These rare items are rapidly disappearing from their native country to Europe and the United States. Ms. Rajab has provided the world an excellent presentation in this book and I would highly recommend it for the serious collector.

The trouble with this book is that it is very small and the photos inside are tiny. The text is interesting but I purchased the book for its photography, so I was not very pleased with it. Amazon accepted my return and refunded my money with no questions asked.

At the Tomb of the Inflatable Pig: Travels Through Paraguay, by John Gimlette

From Publishers Weekly

Over the past 500 years, Paraguay has been invaded by successive waves of conquistadors, missionaries, Mennonites, Australian socialists, fugitive Nazis and, perhaps most improbably, Islamic extremists. "An island surrounded by land," bordered by vast deserts and impenetrable jungles, Paraguay is a country uniquely suited for those seeking to drop out of sight or, like Gimlette, find themselves. The author was 18 when he first traveled to Paraguay more than two decades ago; return visits only deepened his appreciation for the nation and its tragicomic past. Gimlette seems to have gone everywhere and talked to everyone. He boats down piranha-infested rivers, hobnobs with Anglo-Paraguayan socialites and hunts down the former hiding place of notorious Auschwitz doctor Josef Mengele. Gimlette, a travel writer and lawyer in London, proves a chatty, amiable guide to local institutions like the national railway (which has no running trains) and native wildlife, like the fierce, raccoon-like coatimundis (who, Gimlette writes, "make up for their absence of pity with fistfuls of dagger-like claws"). Yet he doesn't shirk from the nastier aspects of Paraguay's bloody history. Gimlette describes in horrific detail, for example, the rape and conquest of the Guarani Indians as well as the brutally repressive regime of Don Alfredo Stroessner (whose U.S.-backed dictatorship lasted longer than any other in the Western Hemisphere). Gimlette could have used some judicious editing-the narrative drags in parts, and its scattered chronology can be confusing-but he never fails to impress with his ingenuity, sincerity and sense of humor. 16 pages of color and b&w photos, not seen by PW. From Booklist

If some Americans can't locate Canada on a map, it's likely many haven't even heard of Paraguay. Yet this California-sized South American country has endured an astonishing run of totalitarianism, instability, and war. Travel writer and attorney Gimlette shares that chilling history, drawing anecdotes from survivors and descendants as he explores the country. While his own doings seem unavoidably flat compared to the outrages he relates (one war killed four-fifths of the country's population, and 9 out of 10 men), it is interesting to glimpse the country today, which is happier yet still a place where the black market dwarfs the gross national product. Gimlette's prose has an almost cartoonish cast at times (a past ruler of "the hookwormed rabble" is "rutting, greasy-pawed"), yet sometimes he turns a perfect phrase ("They already had chimneys and now they wanted fireplaces"). Moreover, he conveys, though he can't explain, a national character that it doesn't seem cliched to call inscrutable. Fascinating and compulsively readable. Although most facts are presented accurately, the tone and perspective given in this book are negative and critical of human beings living in this country. He might have chosen to shock readers in order to achieve more interest. There are inaccuracies (I never heard that people eat piranha soup in Paraguay, for example. Lido restaurant serves its popular surubi soup!) and most facts are told to enhance and radicalize this warm hearted country. One can paint any kind of picture (with the good and bad) of any country's history, and this author used his darker side to enhance the bad in order to degrade it. Many Paraguayans welcomed the author with hospitality and he returned a slap on their faces.

Paraguay prides itself on being a country of "lace and legend". Strange, bizarre things occur almost daily and things that are readily accepted by the Paraguayans cause most Americans and Europeans to scratch their heads in amazement. I continue to contend that this is mostly because modern day Paraguay's culture and people and politics are based on the influence of the Guarani language that most people, even immigrants, speak. Most of us observe the Paraguayan's activities and events from a Euro-centric point of view that limits our understanding of the Paraguayan mind set and acceptance of things that causes our brains to short circuit sometimes. Those of you married into a Paraguayan family will lovingly appreciate the classification. The rest will just have to imagine the pleasure, shock and joy one experiences in the Paraguayan culture. This book is a good introduction for you.The author does a great job summarizing Paraguay's history and politics from "El Supremo" through relatively recent times. If you only want to read one book on Paraguay's history, then this is the one for you as it contains a summary of the Triple Alliance War (Paraguay versus Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) as the author visited many of the main battle sites and the Chaco War fought against Bolivia. Plus it touches on the revolution, Stroessner, Rodriguez and many of the other main political persons from recent times. You could use this book as your main information source for a college paper, or even a Master's Thesis. The author's observations will offend every one and no one as they are mostly spot-on and have little to no political-correctness restrictions. This book will cause laughter, amazement, anger, disgust, consternation, dumfoundedness and spark a general desire to visit Paraguay again, and again. The other reviews here do a good job of discussing the book's contents so I won't repeat it.If you want a good read with a little of everything included (murder, crime, romance, sex, business, trade, culture, etc.) then this should be the book for you.

I read this book prior to a visit to Paraguay. It was most enlightening and enabled me to act as a tour guide in a country where there are no tour guides. The book seems surrealistic until you get there, then it makes perfect sense. One of my favorite stories is the tale of "The Opera Singer", one of Stroessner's henchmen who would sing arias while torturing his victims. The country is great, bring along your Spanish, little English is spoken there.

I found this book very entertaining and enjoyable to read, but the writing style and the editing are a little unconventional, to say the least. The author jumps around a lot and the only thing that might give a clue as to the order of the jumbled historical information presented, is the sequence of the author's travels throughout the country. I say "might" because this is implied, rather than stated anywhere. That said, the author gets across his point that Paraguay is a fascinating country, with lots of colorful and unconventional figures in its past. I learned a lot about the history of the nation, what it might be like to live there and some of the interesting things it contains. I was also entertained by many the interesting anecdotes, both historical and biographical. What more could you want from a travel book?

j.Gimlette is one of the most well informed "travel" writers on Latin America. I know the history of these regions very well ( I am a devote of his other book, "On the Wild coast" about the guianas. Yes there are plenty of personal anecdotes, but there is also alot o historical framing so while at first blush his analysis seems steeped in exotica. in fact, its not: its the magical realism of some of these places, and also he doesn't flinch from their often gaspingly brutal histories that have produced the absurdities and tragedies that now unfold there. His prose is elegant, often he breaks your heart. But he has bothered to explore the deeper dimesnions of these places, so while at first blush it seems, as they say a "romp", he describes a terrible logic the really of which affects him profoundly.

This is one of the most extraordinary histories/adventure tales/personal journals I have ever read. I learned a great deal while balancing between shock and black comedy. For fans of Flashman, this is a great read. For others, it is an equally great read.

I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay for 27 months so that made me interested in this book. It covers what made me love Paraguay even in the rare moments I hated it. It's not a travel guide (nor does it claim to be) but it does talk about various historic landmarks and events and relates them to the significance for the development of the nation's psyche. If you are planning on visiting Paraguay I'd strongly recommend this book in addition to whatever travel guide you choose.

This author gives an interesting commentary on the various experiences of traveling in Paraguay. I enjoyed his colorful descriptions and apt turns of phrase.
