Review

A "gem of a memoir...readers will savor Mulgew's gift for erudite, honest writing and want to read more about her mesmerizing life."―Publishers WeeklyA "vivaciously lyrical memoir, revealing [Mulgrew] as a character more fascinating than any she's played."―Natalie Beach, O Magazine"[Kate's] voice is engaging and funny...Reading about her life, which contains real trauma as well as success, is like being told stories by a good friend over drinks. She takes you behind the scenes on-stage and off, and it's a fascinating journey."―Jenn Northington, BookRiot"Written with a marvelous flair for anecdote and detail" and a "candid, jaunty, pinch-of-sarcasm verbiage."―Joe McGovern, Entertainment Weekly"Mulgrew swaggers endearingly across its pages, her 'able and hardy constitution' ever on display as she powers through the many challenges--both personal and professional--that life has tossed her way. Eloquent and impassioned, the book reaches beyond the standard Hollywood memoir to something more affecting and enduring...Throughout, she narrates with the grandeur of a stage diva holding court: 'Actresses. What a bunch of sad saps, we are,' she intones. 'Madly in love with the child. Madly in love with the craft. Trying desperately to forge an alliance with the two, and constantly failing.' Mulgrew can be proud that this memoir, her defining monologue, proves otherwise."―Nora Krug, Washington Post"It seems unfair that such a talented actress is also such a talented writer." ―Gwen Ihnat, The Onion A.V Club"A powerful, beautifully written piece of work."―The Chicago Tribune"Stunningly candid about everything from the search for her daughter to aging in Hollywood, the actress...brings it all in her arresting new memoir." ―Mary Green, People "Mulgrew has a big story to tell--several stories, actually--and she tells it with a straightforward lyricism that made me think immediately of Patti Smith's Just Kids and Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes. It's that good."―Joanna Connors, The Cleveland Plain Dealer"She has formidable literary skill herself, as she makes clear from the first page of her book (I defy anyone not to fall for her from the first lines)."―Cahir O'Doherty, The Irish Voice

The only thing better than reading Kate Mulgrew's new book "Born with Teeth", is having it read to you by the author! No she doesn't read it she acts it! the first three chapters on disc 1 went by in a flash! her delicious voice caressing each scene with love and memories! Kate Mulgrew has a delightful command of the English language! she doesn't talk down to her audience, she doesn't need to! we know and expect her to teach us and entertain us as well!

I read some one- and two-star reviews of this book, wondering what those who wrote them were expecting. I realized that they wanted to know about "Star Trek" because they are "Star Trek" fans. I found they wanted to know about Ms. Mulgrew's daughter, but they might not have realized that she told us what she wanted us to know about this, a very difficult, very personal time of her life, and that it turned out better than some similar episodes in the lives of others who have gone through the same thing. To them I say, you weren't reading the same book I read, or you weren't reading it for the same reason I read it.Ms. Mulgrew is intelligent and she likes that you know this about her. She doesn't mind telling us that she is well-read, well-spoken and well-rounded, and I don't mind knowing it. She doesn't mind letting us in on the triumphs and the tragedies in her life, and she describes them with just the right amount of detail. She knows we have our own imaginations.I liked this book, from the start to the rather sudden end, but there was nothing more I needed to know. Ms. Mulgrew's varied and storied career speaks for itself.

There is apparently some part of actress Kate Mulgrew that she brings to her roles. Even though her very extreme role as Red on Orange Is The New Black has some of her portrayer's gutsy-ness.This is a funny and at times poignant account of an Irish Catholic kid from Iowa who wanted to be an actress, landed in NYC, and became a soap icon in extremely short order. However, that was only for starters. In this memoir she lays everything out including a daughter that she reluctantly gave away for adoption and the account of finding her daughter decades later, stage acting with Richard Burton, marriage, two sons, divorce, a Star Trek spinoff, an interesting spinoff of Columbo where Peter Falk remains unseen, and eventually more fame and another new following as the unique Red.I liked this book a lot and no small part was Mulgrew herself. It is written with an honesty and openness that is rare. When I read this I could hear her distinctive voice and I could feel her elation as well as her pain. When she discussed her daughter and her relationship with her baby's father, it was one of those life changing events that she might have ignored altogether working from the assumption that the media had been kind and had not hinted that a written in soap pregnancy coincided with her real life pregnancy. Was this book fun? It was so honest, funny, and loving that this was a delightful and easy read due in part to Mulgrew's non-diva working actress persona.End shot? This is a lovely account of talented and charming lady on the way to fame and critical acclaim who quite fortunately sees things realistically.

WOW!!! WOW!! WOW!!! I am certain, had Kate Mulgrew never became an actress, she would have definitely been a poet contender. If it weren't for the fact that this is a memoir, this would be an amazing fictional story, with the twists and turns that would only befall a few. But, add to this that Mulgrew is a tremendous writer. I found myself swept away in the rhythm of the colorful descriptions and language that of course, is only fitting for this tremendous actress and individual. In other words, Born with Teeth is just one of those books that you simply cannot put down. As one who is an avid reader, and has consumed books written from 100 A.D. to today, I truly think this book is, by far, the best memoir written in this century. Mulgrew, please promise us that you will write more books. Today's literature needs more writers like you.

I've been a fan of Kate Mulgrew for a long time-- most of my life, in fact--but somehow had never read her memoir. I bought it recently, almost on a whim, and from the moment it arrived I've struggled to put it down until I'd finished. Reading it supplanted the book I was already reading, and I finished this in much less time than the time available to me seemed to allow for. The woman has had an incredible life-- which is not to say always a good or an enviable one--but it could have been a good deal more boring and still kept me enthralled simply by nature of her writing style. She's a master at conveying entire word pictures, not layered thick, but dry-brush style, so that very few but perfectly chosen words convey thoughts she never actually states. She doesn't have to say, "Then tragedy struck," she simply launches into the tale and you find out it was tragic at the same time she did, hand over your mouth in horror at what you suddenly understand she experienced. She doesn't have to say, "It was blissful," she just says what happened and you're rejoicing with her.I'm still in the afterglow of a delightful book so I could wax eloquent for some time, but suffice it to say, waiting until May for her next book feels way too long.

Mulgrew paints a varied picture in her lifestory that is from the heart, and not a ghostwriter. I found her childhood of interest, her struggles to succeed and her plain joy at performing theater above all other mediums. There are some lingering questions for Star Trek Voyager fans: She doesn't explain whether she achieved lasting peace with Species 8472, whether Janeway's first season hair was made to resemble the bow of the ship, or whether Chakotay's tattoo was actually a map for the way home. Maybe for volume two. Also I would have liked to have read more of her filming of Remo Williams, but that just shows the scattered image I have of her career, from Remo to Voyager. Read this book to find out the real story of the real person!

A comprehensive discussion of the man and his ideas. Contrary to right wing propaganda, Keynes was not promoting a liberal welfare state -- he was prescribing the salvalation of capitalism when it was falling apart during the depression. Obama's program to recover from the Great Recession was pure Keynes. A good read and more accessible than Keynes' General Theory....

We are grateful to Professor Skidelsky for bringing us a well chosen collection of Keynes' writings. Keynes was a unique, exquisite, perceptive and discriminating stylist. We are given here the full spectrum of his interests and sensibilities, from philosophy to economics to history, to politics. One is also favoured with a concise, useful and insightful introduction and commentary on the life and times of Keynes by Prof Skidelsky who knows Keynes probably better than he knew himself.

This book ,overall, is worth obtaining as long as the buyer understands that it is severely marred by a major error that has been passed down to Skidelsky by way of two ignorant book reviews written by Frank P Ramsey when he was 18 and 22 years old, respectively.Consider the following claim made by Skidelsky:"Any account of Keynes’s contributions to economics must start with his distinctive theory of probability. In his Treatise on Probability (1921), he sought to rescue the ordinary language (or ordinal) use of probability from the statistical (or cardinal) theory of probability. He put forward a logical theory of probability, of which the then dominant frequency theory was a special case. In ordinary life, we will often have enough evidence to say that something is more likely to happen than not, without having enough evidence to say it is three times as likely."Keynes's logical theory of probability is actually an interval valued approach built on George Boole's indeterminate (uncertainty)-determinate(risk ) approach in chapters 16-21 of The Laws of Thought (1854).It is impossible for a frequency theory to be a special case of an ordinal theory. An ordinal theory appears nowhere in the TP, although Keynes's approach easily handles such probabilities .The only reference to ordinal, rank order ,or comparative probability comes when Keynes discusses the work of Johnson. Keynes, in chapter 15 of the TP ,makes it very clear that in ordinary life we use intervals. A purely ordinal theory that can be used only some of the time (This is Ramsey's conclusion about Keynes's theory that Skidelsky simply accepts at face value) would be quite worthless.Skidelsky simply lacks the basic ,fundamental training and skills in logic and mathematics needed to assess Keynes's work in probability. Relying on the reviews of an 18 to 22 year old, who never, ever mentioned or considered the concept of interval valued probability at any time in his life, is fatal. The other selections chosen by Skidelsky are illuminating and would benefit the general reader.

A funny, well written book about investing. A must read for anyone who thinks they want to invest their money.

This book was a welcomed "whack up side the head". Reminding me of things I really needed to be reminded about!!Like "yeah, I know that!" What the hell have I been doing lately?"This simplest things are classically the hardest to DO!! Probably should be read a couple times a year.Good stuff indeed!!

Robert Moriarty has written a good book based on the common sense learned from decades of experience. He does not intend to make friends or sugarcoat his analysis. He wants to help readers make money investing, but far more importantly, he wants to minimize losses by following basic logic. As he says, "learn to ignore the experts, the gurus, and other fools."Read the book!It is easy to read, logical, and rather cynical, based on years of experience watching people do stupid things. The crowd is almost always wrong at turning points. We know this and mostly we forget it. Moriarty reminds us again and again. Look at sentiment, ignore the politicians and experts, especially those with an agenda, and remember that markets always correct and regress to the mean.Be suspicious of politicians and experts - he gives many examples and is not worried about alienating people. He calls it as he sees it - not everyone will agree. But the most important chapter, in his opinion and mine, is the chapter "When to Sell." This chapter deserves a second reading. In short, this book is excellent common sense advice on simple ways to reduce your losses and increase your investing profits.Gary Christenson

An excellent book either for investing newbies or those with a lot of experience. Mr. Moriarty makes some points that will save you a LOT of money IF you pay attention....

Here’s the book in a nutshell: do your own research and don’t trust any get rich quick scheme. That’s it. That’s the whole book.

I liked the no nonsense approach, and various examples provided by Bob.I did find a typo I just cant remember what page it is on.I didnt like that it was such a short work.

Informative topics on gold silver commodity investing. The author has some good ideas and explanations for why markets behave the way they do.

Great little book. Easy to read and very interesting. Good advice and those who take it to heart will be financially rewarded. The problem is it so well written that people who really need to pay attention may not realize how difficult it is to follow his advice. I can't recall the trader who said it but Mr. Moriarty has brilliantly stated the simple part: "It is simple but not easy." This cannot be emphasized enough as NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING clearly lays it out for those willing to learn. This is one of the best books ever written on investing and don't let the small size or price fool you. Mr. Moriarty has provided the uninitiated a gem worth many times the price. The initiated, myself included, will have paid that price many, many times over. Buy the book, study it and constantly remind yourself, "If you don't take a profit when you can, you are going to take a loss when you have to."

This is the Python book for the data scientist: already knows Python or at least OOP programming, but wants to be able to utilize the native and NumPy structures for writing machine learning algorithms. Slicing, broadcasting, tuples, pandas data frames -- all useful for applying Python's tools to data science. This is not a beginner book, but it's exactly what I needed to learn the details for translating equations to code.

This book falls somewhere between a manual page providing one example per function and a cookbook, tending more toward the former. Examples are dry and most are constructed using random data. There is very little in the way of practical use cases. I bought the book hoping to get some inspiration for using numpy and/or pandas for some types of analyses I find myself doing, but that didn't happen. Probably I've gathered enough overview that I now can put together useful queries that will provide useful hits on Stack Exchange. I wish I had better to say.

This book gave me my first job. And I am still learning it. It is simple, talks some general idea why functions design like this, and introduces some practical functions. Because in real life real job you always need to look up documentation or to google certain functions, I think the idea why Wes makes functions/variables like this, and what he wants to develop in the future is very important. anyway, I think this book is for data analysis beginner and some intermediate users. I learned Python first so I recommend beginners who want to use Python for Data Analyst/Scientist to learn Python Programming first/simultaneously. At least understand lambda and python expressions, otherwise, you can't feel the full magic.

Wes is the creator of Pandas but he is not an effective writer. This has left a bad taste of pandas in my mind. A lot of examples created in this book are using random numbers and this is a poor way of teaching someone as it's too abstract. Random number generated examples rarely have anything to do with data encountered in real life. This book's problem is the classic curse of knowledge. The author does not know what it's like to get started with pandas and what are the difficulties users will have.

This book covers all of the basics that you would want to know to get started in programming in Python for data analysis, as the title implies, but it doesn't really offer compelling real-world examples. The data seem to be made up and the analyses don't go into enough detail to help you really learn how pandas and numpy work. Overall this is a decent starter book but you will have to bookmark the python and pandas documentation online if you want to have a reference to all of the functionality those tools have, and there are many places online where you can get better examples to learn from. If you haven't made your mind up about which tool to use for data analysis, I highly recommend checking out dplyr in R, which has an excellent free book online (R for data science, hadley wickham). I find it very easy to learn and it is much easier to set up R and RStudio than it is to set up Python, even though I love Python and Pandas.

I’m relatively new to python and data analysis tools like Pandas. Started a month ago and this book makes several things clear — wish I had had it a few weeks ago. We’ll written and generally doesn’t get into minutiae. Very useful.

It's really comprehensive, and covers almost everything you might want to know in mainstream Python data analysis. I like that the examples are complete so you don't have to go and play with the code to understand. Yes, its good to play with the code, but I prefer this style. It's not exhaustive on Pandas, but it covers a lot more than that so you best go to a specialised Pandas book if that is what you want.

I'm getting my feet wet with Python and Python for Data Analysis. This is a great book for beginners to advance users who want to explore and learn Data analysis using Python. In addition to using Python for other purposes.
